EVENT DESCRIPTION
In keeping with the mission of the current dance season, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) continues to explore the myriad possibilities of dance, and how it can transcend language and across media. As autumn is in full swing, CCDC travels to the Pokfulam Farm in the south of Hong Kong Island, where they will be staging a new and exciting immersive installation and dance performance Meeting In-Between Time. Led by resident choreographer Sang Jijia, artists from within and outside the dance troupe have created a composition inspired by the century-old heritage site with its environment, visual projections, and sound installations blended. Against the backdrop of an enchanting landscape, dance artists of CCDC will present a poetic dance amid cool breezes under the night sky, taking the audience on a dynamic journey in the revitalised historic farm while travelling together between the past and present. Meeting In-Between Time will be performed at the Pokfulam Farm for 10 shows from 7 to 16 October2022.
An award-winning choreographer and multimedia artists compose a night poem on a century-old heritage site, offering urbanites an evening of peace away from hustle and bustle
Celebrated choreographer Sang Jijia has created dance compositions in various locations in Europe, including diverse indoor and outdoor spaces. For this brand-new immersive installation and contemporary dance performance for the Pokfulam Farm, he not only adapted his own choreography to the unique environment, but also blended in sound effects, projection mapping, installations, and other media to curate an immersive theatre experience for the audience. “With over a century of history, this place has been revitalised for new stories to be told. For visitors, it is like an encounter with time and space, just as this new production performance by CCDC is an intersection of the old and new. The dancers move through different spaces on the site, bringing the audience with them as they travel together between the past and present,” said Sang Jijia. This performance is another site-specific masterpiece by Sang Jijia after his critically acclaimed outdoor choreography at Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District in 2019.
The creative team behind Meeting In-Between Time is led by CCDC’s resident choreographer in collaboration with experimental musician Dickson Dee, multimedia designer Lo Wing, lighting designer Lawmanray, costume designer Linda Lee, and all the dance artists of CCDC. For two weeks, the talented collective will render a series of mesmerising, flowing landscapes at the Pokfulam Farm, which will be illuminated with video mapping as music verses of autumn nights play.
Inaugural evening performance at Grade I historic building after its revitalisation; tracing memories of the past through splendid landscapes of the city
The Pokfulam Farm, formerly the Old Dairy Farm Senior Staff Quarters known as Braemar, has been designated as a Grade I historic building. The venue has been partially open to the public since its soft opening early this year after a refurbishment in 2019. Besides being remade into the entrance to Pokfulam and a gateway to the local history, the heritage site demonstrates the bonds of the old Dairy Farm with its surrounding communities, connecting the memories of residents with the local history and the sights and sounds of yesteryear. Its hilltop location overlooking the vast ocean is a perennial attraction for visitors either in search of pieces of history or seeking a momentary respite from the daily. It is precisely a concoction of the rich history, architectural appeal, and stunning geography of the Pokfulam Farm that informs Meeting In-Between Time, which will add an awe-inspiring nocturnal charm to the place. As the breeze blows, walk down Pok Fu Lam road and into the heritage site, savour a captivating, lyrical performance as though browsing a cache of historical memories amid the city. Everything echoes. And in time, we shall meet.
