Lousy: Towers Are Giant Fingers Pointing To Heaven

13 July - 26 July

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Inspired by a recent trip to Tokyo, Hong Kong-based artist LOUSY presents a series of new works at BELOWGROUND. Entitled “Towers Are Giant Fingers Pointing To Heaven”, the solo exhibition showcases urban iconographies reimagined in the artist’s distinct visual style.

Getting lost in the chaotic whirl of Tokyo, LOUSY discovered the city’s free subway maps and became intrigued by the complexity of textures and colours found within them. Utilising these as a canvas, he portrays the emotions of being alone in the metropolis, ensconced in a landscape that is distinctively different from his hometown of Hong Kong.

Born in the 1980s, LOUSY works extensively outdoors, with his artistic footprint forming an iconic part of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. Taking references from cave paintings and pop culture, his visual language comprises simplified wavy and rhythmic lines executed in a bright neon palette.

In these new works, the artist’s signature motifs are overlaid upon Tokyo’s subway maps using the solid marker pens that workers use on construction sites – yet another recollection of the magnetic force of the cityscape and the energy of the streets.
