EVENT DESCRIPTION
The joy of childhood is the theme of a|n Gallery’s newest exhibition, held from 9 – 24 June, 2022. This exhibition features the works of Liu Cheng Mui, one of Hong Kong’s most eminent painters, and her younger sister, Liu Tung Mui.
“Joyfulness – Works of Liu Cheng Mui and Liu Tung Mui” is the third collaboration of the two sisters, who joined hands for the first time in 2001 and again in 2012. The unique exhibition features 13 new paintings by Liu Cheng Mui, created throughout 2020 and 2022. These pieces are accompanied by 7 works from Liu Tung Mui. These paintings, created during 1998 and 2005, embody a period of soul-searching for the artist.
Widely recognised as one of Hong Kong’s leading painters, Liu Cheng Mui graduated from the prestigious Central Academy of Art in Beijing, and later the Moscow State Academic Institute of Arts VI Surikov. She is well known for her use of bold colours, depicting scenes and objects that are simultaneously realistic and imaginative. In her latest collection, the artist has constructed a world of childhood fantasies, recalling her fondest memories associated with visions of innocence: dolls, toys, and merry-go-rounds. Created during the pandemic, the works represent Liu Cheng Mui’s desire to find an emotional outlet through art. By creating a joyful, childlike world, she hopes that the viewers will also be able to find solace and peace. With this sentiment, she references Robert Henri’s famous words: “There is an artist within each of us. The world will become a better place when that artist is awake.”
Born with cerebral palsy, Liu Tung Mui began to paint in 1992 and has since defied all odds to become an accomplished artist. Her works are a testament to her vivid imagination, undaunted spirit, and passion for life’s treasures. The artist’s works are characterised by bold, contrasting colours expressed through strong and forceful strokes. In her recently-published biography, Liu Tung Mui comments, “The more immobile and not free (I am), the more I want the strong colours to fill in the blanks in my life. Colours lead me into a kingdom of free imagination.”
Reflecting on this exhibition, Gallery Director Judy Inn states, “We are extremely honoured to hold the exhibition of the Liu sisters, especially during a time when our lives are still affected by the pandemic. I believe everyone will be moved by the sense of positivity and joyfulness displayed in the works. This exhibition gives us an opportunity to appreciate not only the superb skills of two talented artists, but also the healing power of art.”
