EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (Director Choi Jaewon) and the Seoul Museum of Art (Director Choi Eunju) will jointly present the exhibition KITSCH & POP: Korean Pop Art Now from Thursday, October 2 to Saturday, November 22, 2025. Supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) under the 2025 “Touring K-Arts” initiative, the exhibition will be tour from Shanghai to Hong Kong.

KITSCH & POP: Korean Pop Art Now offers a timely re-examination of Korean Pop Art within the contemporary art landscape, highlighting its significance amid the global spread of K-pop and K-culture. Moving beyond the worldwide appeal of Korean music, fashion, film, and cuisine, the exhibition seeks to advance the recognition of Korean visual arts on the international stage.

The exhibition features new works by young, post-internet artists who have been active since the 2010s—including Don Sunpil, Chu Mirim, Noh Sangho, Sim Raejung, Sungsil Ryu, and Jeongsu Woo—alongside selected works from the Seoul Museum of Art’s collection by Kyoung Tack Hong, MeeNa Park, and Shinhye Kim, key representatives of the Korean Pop Art movement in the early to mid-2000s. Structured around two key themes, “Individualized Pop” and “Cool-Kitsch,” the exhibition traces the emergence of Korean pop art in the early 2000s within the context of mass consumption, globalization, and postmodernism, while also exploring the distinctive aesthetic sensibilities of a younger generation shaped by the internet, mobile technology, social media, and artificial intelligence.
