The event will be complemented with performances, exhibitions, workshops and more, with artists hailing from Hong Kong and around the globe, whose diverse and critical perspectives expand the festival theme this year. The Festival will be held at Eaton HK and MCL K11 Art House from 12 September to 6 October 2023.

World Premiere of New Commissioned Films by Local Talents;
9 International Featuring Films to meet Hong Kong Audience
CCDC and RFHK have called for proposals last year for the opening films. Two teams of artists with diverse background were selected to implement their commission film projects, interpreting reenactment with different approaches. In Your Shoes directed and performed by performance artist Florence Lam and documentary filmmaker Chan Tze-woon, a couple to exchange each other’s distressing memories before they met, attempts to reenact own experience with their own art form. A Missing Scene from Floral Princess: An untold suicide of the last Ming emperor directed by Kitty Yeung in collaboration with Cantonese Opera artist Jason Kong, an experimental short reenacting the suicide episode of the last Ming emperor, Chong-zhen from the classic Cantonese Opera Floral Princess. Opening Films: Feelings are Facts will have its world premiere at Eaton HK on 12 Sep.

9 international films would be on screen during the festival which are selected by festival curator Elysa Wendi with the theme this year: Reenactment, leading audience to experience movement from the films.

An Ever-first Assemblage of 6 Overseas Film Festivals at ‘Jumping Frames 2023’

Celebrating the social connectedness in our post-pandemic world, the ‘Jumping Frames’ team is delighted to host artists and curators from around the world who will join the festival and meet our eager audience in person. New screening series ‘Spectrums: International Art House Showcase’ will present the selected arts films from 6 international films festivals to Hong Kong audience, including ‘Dance On Screen FilmFestival Graz’, ‘The International Festival of Films on Art’ (Le FIFA), ‘Cinedans’, ‘South Taiwan Film Festival’, ‘Image Forum Festival‘ and ‘Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul’ (EXiS). Some festival teams will be preset in person to engage with audiences and industry participants in Hong Kong.

Expanded Space: Live performances and exhibition by International Contemporary Artists
This year, ‘Jumping Frames’ continues its previous exploration of the multi-layer dialogue between different artistic practices and domains. By ‘Expanded Space’: (??)???, the exhibition will examine the archival strategies, considerations and formats of two featuring artists working across the valences of performance-making: Melati Suryodarmo and Xavier Le Roy. Each artist will present a performance that emphasises on their methodologies in archiving works, the audience is also invited to re-imagine scenes and essences of their practice through objects, videos, and still images. Further on the live performances, Suryodarmo and Le Roy will engage in a dialogue session moderated by Ö zge Ersoy, the Senior Curator of Asia Art Archive (Hong Kong).

Artist Focus: ‘Your Bros. Filmmaking Group’ from Taiwan
This year’s ‘Artist Focus’ shines a light on ‘Your Bros. Filmmaking Group’ from Taiwan, a filmmaking group formed by contemporary artist So Yo-hen, architect Tien Zong-yuan and art historian Liao Hsiu-hui who have focused on modern migrant workers, while their creative ideas are inspired by news and the circumstances of these workers in Taiwan. They believe in decentralisation, working together with all participants to create a ‘workshop film’.

Their works including Nalam and Dorm which will be screening during ‘Jumping Frames 2023’. The films reinterpreted real-life news events through their lenses. Their process of storytelling often involves migrant workers portraying themselves in their daily lives, this ‘migrant worker- actor’ approach breaks down the barriers between creation and subject matter. ‘Your Bros. Filmmaking Group’ will also engage with Hong Kong creators and audiences through workshop and public talk during the festival.
