Jessica Ng: ESTELLE, the girl and her stars

6 August 2022 - 23 August 2022

EVENT DESCRIPTION

When looking at an artwork, do you imagine a story behind it? Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Jessica Ng used to wonder if all pieces of art had accompanying stories or if we, as the viewer, were supposed to create our own. As an artist, her work aims to evoke curiosity in others and allow audiences to come up with their own narratives.

For her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Quiet Gallery presents a series of acrylic works on canvas, entitled “ESTELLE, the girl and her stars”, created over the past 2 years. “Estelle” the protagonist of the exhibition, is a little masked girl who loves to explore. Her masks bring her comfort and confidence to blend into different environments, as she meets different creatures on her journey. When each meeting comes to an end, the precious memories are stored in the stars she collects.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

A self-taught artist born in Kowloon, Hong Kong, Jessica Ng migrated to Sydney, Australia at a young age with her family. Professionally trained in fashion and graphics design, Jessica worked for a few years in the fashion industry before building an online following via Instagram. This led her to launch an online store selling her artworks in the form of prints and stationary under her brand Jb0xtchi.

In 2019, Jessica had her first solo exhibition at the Wedge Gallery in Sydney, paving the road to a full- time career in art. Her works depict a sense of whimsical innocence, juxtaposed against themes of loneliness and darkness. The world she creates is filled with anthropomorphic creatures and child-like characters in various settings inspired by fairy-tales, fantasy novels, western cartoons and Japanese anime, intermingled with childhood memories and life experiences.
