Jay Khan: POURING SHADOW 酌

20 March - 20 May

EVENT DESCRIPTION

There’s an unmistakable pull when Sin Sin discovered the striking black & white photography works by Jay Khan. The way he framed what’s out there to bring forth the delicate details, the angle he maneuvered, the contrast and balance he mixed. All the more fascinating that Jay’s official profession is actually Head Mixologist of COA, the groundbreaking cocktail bar in Hong Kong that he co-founded, which consistently named to the Asia’s Best Bars list.

Inspired by the geometric poetry of Fan Ho and the nocturnal intimacy of Brassaï, Jay is able to find the still and tranquil moments in the chaotic scenes of Hong Kong: Like a fisherman standing and waiting quietly on the street, he watches the flow of light and shadow, lingering in the city’s movement to capture the ephemeral beauty of real.

His work extracts fleeting fragments of human life from the complex of the urban landscape, shaped by bold, dramatic contrasts that bring subtle theatricality to the ordinary. Within conflicting visual elements, he finds harmony — a natural extension of his life philosophy and the art of mixology, telling hidden stories of the city through what he calls silent dialogue.

He seeks to preserve the authentic moments of daily living experience, using images to carry genuine emotion and build a spiritual connection with the viewer. He invites us to look again at the granted, to discover beauty in the overlooked, and to interpret everyday scenes into visual narratives filled with stories. In this quiet transformation from the mundane to the magical, every image becomes a personal, heartfelt tune that touches the soul.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Jay Khan is a photographic artist based in Hong Kong, whose life has been deeply woven into the city’s cultural and aesthetic evolvement and development. His creative practice began with quiet observations through a mobile phone, and during the pandemic, he formally devoted himself to systematic photographic creation. Being deprived of color sensitivity, he chooses black-and-white as his primary visual language and has been dedicated to monochrome photography. As a renowned mixologist and bar owner, he spends his nights immersed in social energy and human connection; photography becomes his quiet refuge, a space where he returns to his inner self, finds peace, and replenishes his spiritual strength. Balance is the strong core that runs through his life, his cocktail creations, and his visual aesthetics—a steady rhythm he carries between noise and stillness, reason and emotion, the outer world and his inner heart.
