Ink and Chinese Expressionism: Qin Feng & Zhang Fangbai

Artists such as Yuichi Inoue and Jackson Pollock have transformed calligraphy and ink wash into a globalized art language. This global art movement has been continuously propelled since the 1950s, leading to the most significant trend in contemporary Chinese art history over the past several decades, “Chinese Expressionism.” In this exhibition, we will present the works of two crucial artists Qin Feng and Zhang Fangbai within this grand and enduring movement in modern art history.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Qin FengQin graduated from the Shandong College of Arts and Crafts in 1985. He has served as a guest professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1993, he founded the Museum of Contemporary Art Beijing, and in 2020, he established the Qin Han Contemporary Art Research Institute. He is currently a research fellow in contemporary art at Harvard University.
He has received numerous national and international art awards. His works often appeared in Sotheby’s and Christie’s auction, as well as hundreds of domestic and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, the Asia Art Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
His works are collected by prestigious museums, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Hundreds of his works have been donated to projects focused on art education, disaster relief, and orphan support.
Zhang Fangbai
Zhang graduated from the Fourth Studio of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1991. He is currently the Professor of the College of Fine Arts at East China Normal University and the Director of the Chinese Expressionism Institute.
In 2019, he was awarded the International Outstanding Artist Award by the Austrian Ministry of Culture, and in 2018, he was named one of the Top Ten Most Influential Artists in Art News of China. In 1993, he was awarded the Chinese Oil Painting Biennale Academy Award by the Chinese National Academy of Arts.
His works are collected by the National Museum of China, the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum, the Ludwig Museum Koblenz in Germany, the China Art Museum Shanghai, the Guangdong Museum of Art, the World Expo Museum, Shanghai, the Xiamen BRICS Conference Hall, and the Meilun Art Museum, Hunan, and numerous private collections.
