Born in Shantou, Guangdong, Louis Mak supported himself in his youth by sketching portraits on the streets. After a period devoted to business, he rejuvenated his passion for painting upon retirement in 2000. Under the guidance of prominent artists such as Lotus Devotee Liang Yehong, Lam Wu-fui, Szeto Nigel, and Wucius Wong, Louis Mak integrated various techniques, forging a distinctive style that earned him praises. He achieved consecutive gold awards in the international competition “Budding Artists Exchange Exhibition” in 2007-08. His works have been exhibited in prestigious art institutions such as the Guan Shanyu Museum. Shenzhen and the exhibition “Ink Global 500”. Since 2009, his artworks have entered Christie’s Hong Kong auctions.
This exhibition showcases a retrospective of Louis Mak’s early and recent works, spanning nearly two decades of artistic exploration. From the ethereal mist of Huangshan to the graceful postures of lotus flowers, Louis Mak’s pieces reveal a diverse range of styles and techniques, reflecting his continuous pursuit of innovation in art. Despite his extensive experience, Louis Mak maintains a fervent passion and exploratory spirit in his artistic endeavours. His unique style seamlessly blends traditional ink aesthetics with a profound understanding of abstract and modern elements.
Visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate Louis Mak’s ink paintings, particularly those centered around lotus themes. Ingeniously employing ink, he captures the various postures of lotus flowers, some delicate as dreams, others vibrant and captivating. Beyond technical and colour brilliance, these works convey the artist’s profound insights into life, emotions, and nature. Louis Mak’s lotus creations represent a fusion of tradition and modernity, forming a distinctive artistic language. Through the interplay of light and shadow, his brushstrokes create a fantastical dreamscape, immersing viewers in the realms of nature.
Inspired by his visit to Huangshan in 2018, Louis Mak created the “Clouds and Mountains” series, elevating his use of brushstrokes, light, and dynamic force to explore “the drama of light and dark, mass and void, movements and quietude”, as commented by Wucius Wong. In his Clouds and Mountains works, Louis Mak employs a variety of techniques, departing from conventional approaches while maintaining a foundation in realism.
This exhibition serves as Louis Mak’s first retrospective, showcasing his years-long commitment to artistic innovation. His paintings, rich in depth and layers, offer viewers a glimpse into the diverse facets of the artist, revealing profound understandings of art and life.

Through art, he gives back to society, demonstrating the social responsibility of an artist.
