Howie Tsui: The Cradle Rocks Above an Abyss

27 January - 9 March

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Hanart TZ Gallery is delighted to present the exhibition Howie Tsui: The Cradle Rocks Above an Abyss, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by the noted multimedia artist Howie Tsui. The exhibition will feature a selection of his latest works representing his oeuvre of the past few years, including his key media work and multimedia installations featured in the Macao International Art Biennale 2023, as well a series of his latest ink paintings.

The Cradle Rocks Above an Abyss (2023) presents a recent survey of Tsui’s work,  unveiling the richness of his poly-disciplinary studio practice encompassing ink painting, interactive sound sculpture, print and new media.

Created using hundreds of ink drawings, 2d animation and computer programming, Parallax Chambers is an algorithmic media work that chaotically cycles through a series of confined rooms – recalling claustrophobic tenement units and the hermetic chambers depicted in wuxia for internal training and meditation. This motif of fragmented loops fluctuating within bound environments coincidentally reflected the conditions of isolation resulting from the pandemic. The work is the sequel to Tsui’s renowned project Retainers of Anarchy – a 5-channel algorithmic animation sequence that conflates Jin Yong’s wuxia universe with the self-organised community that inhabited the Kowloon Walled City. These works raise questions around chaos and order while considering whether social harmony can manifest in anarchic societies.
