EVENT DESCRIPTION

After three long years of pandemic disruptions, physical events and public activities have gradually returned to normal in the local cultural and arts scene. Satellite Exhibitions, presented by the Hong Kong International Photo Festival, is returning with its first edition of international exchange programme by spotlighting 6 overseas and 7 local image makers throughout the Festival period.

Since 2018, the Satellite Exhibitions Programme has showcased over 60 local image makers and collectives. The initial concept of Satellite was to transform everyday spaces scattered around the city into captivating photographic encounters, challenging local creative forces to overcome spatial limitations. Throughout the years, the project has evolved to focus on nurturing emerging talents and introducing their works to the wider public.

In hopes of branching out and cultivating new connections, HKIPF reached out to 6 overseas photography organisations, including Angkor Photography Festival and Workshop (Cambodia), Lightbox Photography Library (Taiwan), Matca (Vietnam), Objectifs (Singapore), Photo Australia (Australia) and PhotoBangkok (Thailand) to each nominate an artist and collaborate on an buddy exchange programme. Over a period of 18 months, Satellite artists and partners shared ideas in group critiques, talks, and consultation sessions, stimulating each other in discovering new possibilities and reflections on photographic practices. The culmination of these exchanges imbues 12 diverse yet harmonious bodies of work scattered across 9 venues, echoing the idea of “Satellite”.

Exploring Processes of Photobook Making with Yumi Goto

The Festival 2023 brings to Hong Kong the Photobook-making Workshop led by Yumi Goto, an independent photography curator renowned in photobook-making. 11 participants, reviewed and selected by Yumi Goto and co-facilitator Kurt Tong, will explore the process of generating ideas and refining concepts in the pursuit of a coherent photographic series in printed form. Through individual and group discussions and critique, participants will examine the strengths of their ideas and intentions, enhance their conceptualisation skills, and materialise the potential project into a publication. The Workshop will be followed by an open-to-public Photobook Dummy Showcase, exhibiting the freshly produced printed matters by participants.
