EVENT DESCRIPTION
The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority is proud to present the Hong Kong edition of the iconic Broadway rock’n’roll musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, co-presented and co-produced by WestK and Motion 27 for eight shows from 10 to 17 May 2025 at Freespace in the WestK. The production blends drag artistry with pulsating rock music brilliantly and has received global acclaim for being a challenging work that pushes the limits of musical theatre performers. Directed by cross-disciplinary theatre artist Ivanhoe Lam, with a Cantonese translation by renowned local musical actor Jordan Cheng, and supported by a star-studded production team, this eye-catching musical is set to be another stage hit in Hong Kong.
The anticipation for Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been so high that its early-bird tickets went on sale on 12 March and sold out within the first day. Tickets are now available to the public on the WestK website.
The star-studded Hedwig and the Angry Inch makes history as the first time to be translated into Cantonese, with essence and energy of the original production preserved in this unique adaptation
The original Hedwig and the Angry Inch premiered in 1998, written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. It has been adapted into multiple languages and won rave reviews from audiences worldwide. Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as “the first rock musical that truly rocks”, this Broadway classic solidified its legacy in 2014 by winning multiple prestigious theatre awards, including the Tony Awards. The story focuses on Hedwig, from the former East Berlin, who undergoes gender-affirming surgery for love, only for the procedure to go wrong. Abandoned and betrayed by a series of lovers, the wry, gender-bending rock singer sets out on a riotous tour of reinvention and revenge with her band, The Angry Inch. Bristling with resentment, hardship and vulnerability, Hedwig takes audiences on a rock-fuelled journey of redemption, love, hatred and desire through a rich tapestry of laughter and tears.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch makes history as the first time to be translated into Cantonese. The production features a stellar lineup of both cast and production team directed by Ivanhoe Lam, a prominent figure in cross-disciplinary performance art. Lam has taken on various roles, including choreographer, director and dance director for concerts, and has participated in numerous large-scale productions locally and abroad. Notably, he received the Best Choreography award at the 2024 Beijing Tianqiao Musical Annual Ceremony for his work on The Impossible Trial
Promised to transform Freespace into a rock carnival, Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be complemented with warm-up and post-show DJ parties every night, from classic hits from the 1970s and 1980s to electronic dance music, taking the party atmosphere to new heights. Audiences are encouraged to join in the fun and enter the rebellious world of the Hedwig stage tour. Enhanced by an exclusive drink offer, this experience invites audiences to indulge and cheer for Hedwig’s vibrant performance while confronting the absurdities and challenges of life.
