EVENT DESCRIPTION

The highly anticipated graphic design exhibition GRAPHIC DESIGN IN JAPAN 2024 (Hong Kong Edition) returns to PMQ! Recognised as one of Asia’s most prestigious graphic design events, in a long term partnership with Japan Graphic Design Association (JAGDA), PMQ premiered this exhibition in Hong Kong in 2019, marking the first time it was presented outside of Japan. The success of past editions in PMQ has strengthened this collaboration, enabling the 4th jointly curated showing.

This celebrated showcase will run from 25 April to 11 May, 2025, marking the first stop of JAGDA’s overseas tour. The exhibition will showcase over 300 masterpieces by leading Japanese designers, with Ryosuke UEHARA, Akiko SEKIMOTO, and Naonori YAGO in attendance to share their insights.

A notable highlight is the brand-new “JAGDA Kids” programme – an exclusive family initiative co-curated by Creative Education programme, PMQ Seed and JAGDA, bringing together Japanese and local designers. Visitors can also explore a pop-up shop offering limited editions of design items – making it a must-visit destination for design professionals, art and culture enthusiasts, and Japanese culture lovers.

Step into the “Design Sanctuary”: A Journey of Aesthetic Excellence Featuring Over 300 Design Masterpieces

The exhibition transforms “The Qube” on PMQ’s second floor into a “Design Sanctuary”, where Japanese shrines and craftsmanship inspire sustainable exhibition design. This curated space serves as a convergence point for design enthusiasts to experience the latest masterworks, offering visitors an immersive journey into design and aesthetic excellence.

Beyond the captivating exhibition space, the showcased works promise an extraordinary experience. “GRAPHIC DESIGN IN JAPAN 2024″ Yearbook, published by JAGDA, compiles the year’s finest works selected by JAGDA’s jury panel. From 2,055 submissions, 568 designs were selected for the publication, with over 300 pieces now on display – creating a magnificent visual feast!

Visitors can explore an extensive collection, including the winner of the 26th Yusaku Kamekura Design Award, Issay KITAGAWA ; works by JAGDA New Designer Award recipients Mariko OKAZAKI, Shunta SAKAMOTO, and YAMAGUCHI Agata; as well as winning entries across JAGDA Awards’ 10 categories, encompassing Video, Digital Media, Book & Editorial Design, Newspaper & Magazine Advertisements, Poster, Package Design, Spatial Designs, and more. Highlight works include the “KAMIZU” series by Issay KITAGAWA, the spatial installation “Make The Future Better Than Today” by influential Kenya HARA, Ryosuke UEHARA’s logo design for natural wine “LIVVERA”, and Taichi TAMAKI’s Mother’s Day and Father’s Day newspaper advertisements featuring Chibi Maruko-chan – all demonstrating how design seamlessly integrates into our daily lives.

First–Ever in Hong Kong! Exclusive “JAGDA Kids” Workshops – Inspiring Creativity Through the Five Senses with Renowned Japanese DesignersSince 2018, PMQ’s creative education programme PMQ Seed has been fostering creativity through design thinking and empathy, collaborating with cross-disciplinary design and creative partners to deliver innovative educational experiences for primary and secondary school students in the local community. This year, PMQ Seed has partnered with JAGDA to launch “JAGDA Kids” for the first time in Hong Kong, featuring workshops and talks during the exhibition period to explore the relationship between senses and design.

The “JAGDA Kids” workshop, themed around “Five Senses,” will be led by renowned designers Ryosuke UEHARA, Naonori YAGO (JAGDA 2025 Education Committee member), and Sarene Chan (winner of the JAGDA 2025 New Designer Award), along with Slok, founder of the local chocolate brand SLOK Chocolate. This interactive activity sparks creative thinking, strengthens family bonds, and brings a warmth to the design experience.

In addition to the workshop, designers Ryosuke UEHARA and Naonori YAGO, who are participating in “JAGDA Kids,” will further discuss the importance of perception in creativity during the “Creative Voice” session, alongside the tutor of the PMQ Seed teaching team. They will also share how creative education cultivates the next generation’s perception and innovative thinking.
