Garnet, Art & Science

5 July 2023 - 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$250

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Red is a powerful color, maybe the only color worthy of universal meaning, symbolizing blood and wealth. Red gemstones would therefore be particularly praised for their magical, energetic or prophylactic properties. Garnets are no exceptions. As Professor Michel Pastoureau highlighted in his book The History of Color: In some languages, the word for red was the same as the word for color”. The term Garnet originally means “dark red” in medieval English, but are all garnets red though? Where do they come from? What are the specificities of such minerals?

Let us journey into the world of this gemological family, with a conversation embracing the Art and Science around Garnets and their special rank in European regalia, especially in the Habsburg Empire!

Speakers:
Mathilde Rondouin, Art Historian and Lecturer at L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts
Dr. Miro Fei-Yeung Ng, Founder and Managing Director of CGR Centre for Gemmological Research, and Lecturer at L’ECOLE, School of Jewelry Arts
