Game Atlas: The Archeology of a World not Far-away
24 October 2022 - 29 October 2022
EVENT DESCRIPTION
M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District and Goethe-Institut Hongkong will co-present Game Atlas: The Archeology of a World not Far- away, a six-day programme to be held from 24 to 29 October 2022. The programme invites game designers from Asia and Europe to exchange and explore the power of producing contextualised content in games. The programme is in collaboration with Current Plans and School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, and co-curated with Allison Yang Jing, independent game exhibition curator.
Aiming to unpack games as a medium for historical storytelling, representation of cultural heritage, and revival of community experience with the assistance of playful mechanics and virtual world-building, the programme invites participants to experience how storylines develop, how video games express something relevant about the here and now, and how game worlds impact our daily lives.
Game Atlas: The Archeology of a World not Far-away consists of three activities:
• Game Designer Lab: A four-day conference that will run from Monday to Thursday, 24 to 27 October 2022
at Current Plans, an independent art space, and online. The hybrid conference invites Hong Kong speakers and attendees to gather at Current Plans to meet the international speakers via Zoom. The conference provides game enthusiasts a platform to exchange perspectives and methodologies, as well as explore the power of gaming. The conference will be live-streamed.
• M+ Game Night: Gaming with the Developers: A live game playing experience on Friday, 28 October 2022. During the Friday evening, participants will gather at Grand Stair, M+ to learn about indie game development through interactive sharing sessions with three indie game developers, and experience videogames as they are meant to be experienced, through play.
• M+ Young People Meet-up: City Building as a Board Game: A creative experience for participants ages sixteen to twenty-four to be held on Saturday, 29 October 2022, supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong. During the workshop, game masters from game design, performance, and arts and culture will lead participants to collectively build reimagined cities with the worldbuilding toolbox ‘One Hour Worldbuilders’. Participants will re-imagine the possibilities of cities with others and discover the ideas that intertwined.
