Fung Yee Lick: A Few Things About Calligraphy

30 August - 30 September

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Fung’s project explores the “aboutness” of Chinese calligraphy, using contemporary art methods to delve into the essence, purpose, meaning, and possibilities of calligraphy itself. Through three thematic aspects – emulation of ancient styles, form creation, and definition – the works are categorised, breaking away from the vertical context of traditional calligraphic history. It even attempts to detach calligraphy from its cultural background, exploring whether it has the capability to stand independently as an artistic medium.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Fung (b. 1985 Hong Kong, MA Fine Arts CUHK & MA Museum Studies University of Leicester) is a calligraphy and mixed media artist. He has been observing and experimenting with calligraphic representations that embody modernity. With a keen interest in exploring and understanding the origins of human consciousness and perspectives, he also seeks to apply his art practice in response to the contemporary issues of human senses, identity and history.
