Freespace Ensemble: Yellow Magic Orchestra Reimagined
EVENT DESCRIPTION
When Japanese electropop ensemble Yellow Magic Orchestra – YMO – exploded onto the scene in the 1970s, their bright, ironic, technically masterful music struck a chord with audiences around the world. Mixing synthesisers and drum machines with pop, funk, soul and exotica, their albums reflected a uniquely Japanese experimentation with the technologies of the time.
Freespace Ensemble: Yellow Magic Orchestra Reimagined revisits classic tracks from the band’s decades-long output, showcasing the scope and playfulness of their work, and the fearless musical genius of founding members Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Under the musical direction of Hong Kong artist hirsk, whose work straddles pop and experimental worlds, top young indie artists – JU!iE, Daniel Chu, Kingston Lo, Blue Kwok, ZiTi, Addison Yip, Perry Lau, Maka and Cong Quartet – come together in cross-genre collaborations to reconstruct YMO’s iconic sounds. Through new dimensions of noise and harmonic and complexity, and video design by Yuwen, the event offers a layered exploration of the influence of YMO and the evolving impact of technology.
