EVENT DESCRIPTION
Born in London in 1967, and settled in Hong Kong since 1997, Frances de Saint Germain was drawn to art from a very young age, and works regularly across painting, porcelain and sculpture. Photography has remained omnipresent as a figurative medium, rooted in her observations of everyday life.
In 2022, she began photographing boats under maintenance in Hong Kong. What draws her are the hidden surfaces and the in-between states: weathered hulls, exposed structures, traces of workmanship, of paint layers being stripped back and reapplied. Through subtle adjustments in colour, contrast and framing, these fragments metamorphose, slipping toward abstraction, becoming unfamiliar territories that hint at vastness, depth and the unknown.
She is often found in Hong Kong’s boatyards, happily gathering more material for her unusual passion, capturing details of these majestic structures in transition suspended between their past and future adventures.
