East-West Contemplations: A Retrospective of Mio Pang Fei (Macao Museum of Art)

18 June - 11 October

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Mio Pang Fei, the late revered artist of Macao, the retrospective invites visitors to explore his artistic evolution over five decades. From his early years in Shanghai to his creative blossoming in Macao, Mio’s life and work capture the vibrant spirit of a city where Chinese and Western influences meet. As a trailblazer of Macao’s modern art movement, he forged a bold vision that united the traditions of Shanghai and Macao, blended the old with the new, and wove Eastern and Western sensibilities together. This vision found its ultimate expression in his signature philosophy: ‘Neo-Orientalism’.

Showcasing 90 works spanning painting, mixed media, installation, and manuscript, the exhibition unfolds like a living biography. Divided into six evocative sections – ‘Shanghai – Experiment’, ‘Macao – Practice’, ‘The Shui Hu Series’, ‘On Human Condition’, ‘Post-Calligraphy’, and ‘The Legacy of Neo-Orientalism’ – the exhibition culminates in an immersive experience. In the final section, visitors step into Mio’s creative universe through a reconstructed studio, rare photographs, documentaries, and a detailed timeline, gaining a deeper, more personal connection to the artist’s enduring legacy.

The exhibition offers a vivid exploration of Mio Pang Fei’s journey across cultural frontiers and his groundbreaking creation of Neo-Orientalism, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a world of abstract wonder.
