Dialogue Bands

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Dialogue Bands exhibition, a collaborative drawing project between students and lecturers from Hong Kong Art School and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) School of Arts, is set to captivate art enthusiasts and cultural enthusiasts alike. The exhibition, held at the Jockey Club Atrium in the Hong Kong Arts Centre from 2 September to 12 October 2023, aims to synthesize a connection between the two institutions, exploring diverse approaches to thinking through art-making, exchanging ideas, and delving into cultural themes.

Twenty pairs of HK+AUS students for collaborative creation

The project brought together twenty talented students from Hong Kong Art School, each paired with a counterpart from RMIT, coming up a unique collaboration. Drawing inspiration from a shared image prompt, the students contributed their individual artistic expressions to create composite drawings. These intriguing works of art, yielded by merging the halves of artworks done by student artists of two continents; will be showcased in this exhibition and later featured at RMIT, School of Art in Melbourne starting in March 2024.

Using various mediums, the students responded to photographic image strips sourced from the rich cultural environments of both Hong Kong and Melbourne. Aiming to reflect their unique perspectives, the students from Melbourne worked from the right edge of the common strip to complete their A3 works on paper, while their counterparts from Hong Kong worked from the left edge to create their artistic contributions. Throughout the process, the students engaged in collaborative discussions with their partners, exchanging ideas, interpretations, approaches, mediums, and possibilities. These interactions took place through mediums such as emails, files, and online shared folders, resulting in a diverse range of artworks that are both harmonious and contrasting, showcasing the incredible talents of the students involved.

The “Dialogue Bands” exhibition serves as a testament to the artistic growth and cultural exchange, bringing together emerging artists from Hong Kong and Melbourne. Through their captivating artworks, the exhibition not only highlights their creative prowess but also contributes to a broader understanding of the vibrant artistic communities in both cities.
