EVENT DESCRIPTION
This exhibition will take place at the Cattle Depot Artist Village in To Kwa Wan and display the creations of David Sheekwan, Hong Kong’s first-generation fashion godfather. Visitors can explore medium and large oil and Chinese ink paintings that utilize pure black and grey scales and vibrant rainbow colours to create a mysterious and whimsical atmosphere.
David Sheekwan embraced a simple lifestyle while also engaging in creative pursuits. With a straightforward approach at his core, he developed a unique artistic vision and held solo exhibitions in Shanghai, Macau, and Guangzhou. This exhibition showcases a selection of his private collections and features Chinese expressive art and paintings that have never been displayed anywhere else. David Sheekwan’s creations are imbued with a sense of mystery, offering an unparalleled experience through simplicity and emphasis, texture, and intricate details.
David Sheekwan founded his company and created a fashion brand named David Sheekwan, known for producing uniquely designed fabrics that have gained international popularity. He also developed an exclusive colour book for fashion, which has received high praise from the fashion industry. This exhibition will showcase items from David & David along a narrative timeline, highlighting significant events in Hong Kong’s fashion scene and providing a retrospective on David Sheekwan and the local fashion industry.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
David Sheekwan, the first-generation fashion icon in Hong Kong in the 1970s, was born in Yunnan. He graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, majoring in painting, before designing textiles in Spain, Paris, and New York. In 1972, he returned to Hong Kong and established his fashion design brand, David Sheekwan, where his fashion empire began. His designs were loved by customers worldwide, including in Japan, Taiwan, and France. In 1984, David Sheekwan designed and produced the dress for the Chinese national team at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics opening ceremony, showcasing a new look.David Sheekwan focused on art creation in his later years. He began publishing photography books in 2001 and then explored oil painting and expressive Chinese ink as his primary forms of artistic expression. His creations were clean yet vibrant, showcasing his expertise as a fashion master. He had a keen eye for colour layering, lines, and proportions. David developed his tips for colour use and conducted numerous oil painting colour trials.
Eventually, he shifted to a palette primarily composed of black and white tones, using grey gradients to highlight a differentiated world.
