Zhi Art Space Hong Kong is pleased to present Woven Light: Threading Colour into Memory, the first solo exhibition in Asia by Ghanaian artist David Boateng. Featuring 15 meticulously embroidered works crafted with fine silk threads, the exhibition explores the intricate relationship between colour and memory through richly layered visual narratives. The exhibition runs till 26 August.
Boateng’s works pay tribute to the iconic paintings of British artist David Hockney. Through the language of thread, he reinterprets Hockney’s recognizable imagery—translating light, rhythm, and spatial dynamics into textile form. This transformation invites viewers to experience familiar visuals from a fresh perspective.
In Woven Light, memory is not a fixed record but a living process—stitched, layered, and continually reshaped. The works engage with themes of observation, travel, and dwelling, encouraging reflection on the fluid connections between self and environment. The exhibition’s compositions, both familiar and reimagined, evoke a subtle tension between time, place, and perception.
This exhibition invites viewers to enter embroidered tableaux where thread redefines the known, and colour maps the contours of remembrance—a space where past and present, repetition and reinterpretation, gently converge.
