EVENT DESCRIPTION

M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong, will host Cyberfeminism Index: Lecture Performance and Conversation with Mindy Seu and a book signing of her latest title on Friday, 17 November 2023, from 19:00 to 20:30 at The Forum, Learning Hub, located on the ground floor of M+.

Mindy Seu is a designer, educator, and researcher based in New York City. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and Critic at Yale School of Art. The event will revolve around Cyberfeminism Index (2022), her latest title, and the subject of ‘cyberfeminism’, exploring its extensive nature and emphasis on inclusivity. Seu will deliver a lecture performance, followed by a talk and a book signing.

In her lecture performance, Seu will combine an overhead camera with an augmented reality (AR) application developed by artist and programmer Tommy Martinez. She will project the book’s spreads, utilising AR to overlay videos triggered by specific images. By intentionally disrupting linear narrative and highlighting the multiplicity of practices and voices within cyberfeminism, the performance will mirror the interconnected nature of the online world. It showcases the myriad of thoughts, critiques, and knowledge that continuously expand and evolve. Seu will then give a talk, moderated by Kate Gu, Producer, Digital Special Projects, M+, to unpack references in the lecture performance and expand on ideas about online activism, net art, and digital culture. The event will be conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation in Cantonese and Mandarin.

A book signing for Cyberfeminism Index (2022) will also be held to give participants the opportunity to meet Seu personally. The book will be available for purchase at the M+ Shop and during the event.Cyberfeminism Index (2022) is a groundbreaking 608-page encyclopaedic compilation that delves into radical techno-critical activism across various media. The book includes excerpts from academic articles, scholarly texts, descriptions of hackerspaces, digital rights activist groups, bio-hacktivism, and depictions of feminist net art and new media art. By examining not only infrastructural and hardware technologies but also the internet as an environment shaped by its inhabitants, Seu provides a comprehensive exploration of cyberfeminism’s origins and legacies.
