Comic Fun for All: The Magic of Hong Kong Comedy Comics
21 May 2025 - 9 March 2026
EVENT DESCRIPTION
A sense of humour is the best remedy for hectic urban life. Things may not always work out the way you want, but at some point, there is still something “intriguing” and laughter-provoking if you can see the funny side. Comedy comics first appeared in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. By the 1950s, local comics began to gain prominence, gradually becoming popular leisure reading material in Hong Kong. Iconic comic characters, like Old Master Q, My Boy and Sau Sing Chai, became household names, entertaining generations of readers. Both then and now, comics have played a key role in Hong Kong’s popular culture.
This exhibition presents a perspective from the comic artists, guiding visitors through five major zones where they can meet comic characters from different periods on comedy boulevard. Visitors will gain insight into the artists’ inspiration and revisit iconic comic works from the 1950s to the present day, along with the creative concepts and artistic features behind them. Through this all-encompassing showcase of works by both seasoned and emerging comic artists, the audience can enjoy a brand of humour unique to Hong Kong and learn how the comic industry is passing on its legacy. Visitors can immerse themselves in the creative world of comic artists in many ways, have fun and take check-in photos to mark their humorous journey through Hong Kong comics. A Comics Reading Zone is also set up to feature a curated selection of Hong Kong comedy comics published in different eras from the collections of the Hong Kong Public Libraries. Visitors can enjoy these hilarious works and rekindle the joy of reading comics.
The exhibition is one of the programmes of the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2025.
