Chan Wai-lap: Jeremy’s Bathhouse

19 March - 30 August

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Hong Kong artist Chan Wai-lap presents a new solo exhibition at Oi!, continuing his Swimming series to construct an immersive bathhouse installation that blurs the line between reality and imagination. Drawing inspiration from bathing cultures across time and places, the artist reinterprets these influences into a contemporary version unique to Hong Kong. By subtly dissolving the boundaries between public and private, the exhibition explores the bathhouse, one that embodies the purification of both body and mind, while reflecting the multifaceted meanings of self-discovery and social connection, offering an immersive reflection on space, culture, and perception.

The site-specific installation LEVO LOVE features a heart-shaped pool and Chromatic soap, composed of more than 1 200 handcrafted ceramic tiles fusing Jingdezhen’s traditional tile-making techniques. Through the timed release of mist at the exhibition space, it creates a shifting visual ambience that moves between clarity and obscurity. Moreover, inspired by the rare “left-spiral snail”, Chan reflects on the balance between preserving personal uniqueness and adapting to one’s surroundings.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Chan Wai-lap’s creative practice encompasses painting, drawing, and installation. His works are often inspired by personal experience, memory, and everyday happenings. In recent years, he has focused on documenting public swimming pools to explore the concept of power dynamics—between public and private, self and others, and the relationships among these concepts. Chan’s works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, New York, Istanbul, and Abu Dhabi and more. Recent exhibitions include “I Will Always Be On Your Side” (Tai Kwun Contemporary, 2020), “The Lonesome Changing Room” (Art Central, 2021), “Some Of Us Are Looking At The Stars” (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2023–24), and “Loveguard” (Gallery EXIT, 2025). He received the Award for Young Artist (Visual Arts) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2019, and the inaugural Winsor & Newton × Paul Smith’s Foundation International Art Prize in 2024.
