Chan Kwan-lok: The Connection with Nature Ink Art Installation

3 November 2023 - 28 February 2024

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Venetian artists seamlessly integrated secular elements, such as contemporary costumes, natural landscapes and scenes of everyday life, into their religious themes. They depicted human desires and emotions, bridging the gap between deities and humanity. Inspired by this fusion of the divine and the human, Hong Kong artist Chan Kwan Lok perceives a growing distance between city life and nature. He imbues the landscape with a sense of sublime sacredness reminiscent of primitive nature worship.

Drawing upon the influence of Venetian painting, Chan employs traditional ink techniques to personify natural elements such as the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, trees and rocks, infusing them with vitality. Through the portrayal of emotions and experiences, he aims to establish a profound connection with nature, bringing it closer to our senses. The Connection with Nature Ink Art Installation features 13 sets of gongbi paintings (paintings with meticulous brushwork). It invites the viewers to immerse themselves in profound artistic emotions from both past and present while visiting “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Titian and the Venetian Renaissance from the Uffizi”, uncovering the inherent depth and meaning within.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Graduated from the Fine Arts Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chan Kwan Lok is keen on exploring the feasibility of lines through depictions of the human motions and nature. Using rhythmic lines to construct a rigorous yet subtle framework, Chan portrays ordinary objects, people and marine animals to create a whimsical fantasy.
