EVENT DESCRIPTION
Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the original London production opened in 1981 at the New London Theatre and transferred to Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre 1982.
Once a year, all Jellicle cats gather for the Jellicle Ball. On this special night, their wise and benevolent leader, Old Deuteronomy, chooses one cat to be reborn into a new Jellicle life. Throughout the evening, different cats come forward to tell their stories and demonstrate why they should be selected for this honour.
Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 54 countries, has been translated into 23 languages and has been seen by more than 77 million people worldwide. The Broadway cast recording won a Grammy Award for Best Cast Album. The original creative team include design by John Napier, choreography by Gillian Lynne, and direction by Trevor Nunn.
