EVENT DESCRIPTION
Widely known as Pearl of the Orient since mid-1900’s, Hong Kong was famous for its illuminated nightline.
Traces of the bygone era is gradually replaced with contemporaries befitting of mod- ern idealism.
Neon lights were once a staple of urban landscape, a beacon of modernity, now an accomplice of light pollution. Seeing the cultural significance of neons, Camille Levert embraced them as the subject of her photographic sculpture series, hand-made in Hong Kong with care.
Layered images of signage are embroidered with neon-coloured threads, caressed by feminine hands.
The composition suggests a sense of care and cherishment as the sign becomes a precious and unique smaller object. Through this series, the artist pays tribute to the cultural icon and the handmade craftsmanship behind it, but most importantly, it shines a light on the receding traces of Hong Kong’s cultural identity and incite the notion to preserve what is left. When the world constantly bulldoze us towards an ever-changing modernity, it is our obligation to hold on to traces of our past that re- minds us who we are today.
