Cambodia After Farewell: film screening

16 December - 6:30 am - 8:30 pm

$200 – $250

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Royal Geographical Society – Hong Kong (RGS-HK) is pleased to host the film screening of Cambodia After Farewell by Hong Kong resident Iv Charbonneau.

The film tells how fifty years ago, Iv’s mother and aunts fled Cambodia without their husbands, under the bombs of civil war, to find refuge in France. After years of silence, they embark together on a return to the land of their youth, tracing the footsteps of their missing parents and a fragmented memory. For them, it is time to confront the terrifying reality of what their family endured under the Khmer Rouge regime of exile, forced labour and torture.

For Iv and his relatives, an unbearable reality is that, at the time, this horror was cloaked in ideals of independence and social justice. His family believed in this dream. Like many other Cambodians in exile, his uncles and their friends had enthusiastically joined the Cambodia of the Khmer Rouge. More than a return to an illusion, the film seeks to understand, through this journey, why his and his relatives’ parents died, and their hopes of rediscovering a memory and perhaps a family.
