EVENT DESCRIPTION
Curated by SIDESPACE with Matt Chung and Alex Chan, the art exhibition By Chance. By Luck is a cross-disciplinary dialogue between a chef and a photographic artist. David Leung followed Neighborhood’s founder David Lai on his journey – from sourcing fresh daily seafood at the wet market to spontaneous culinary creations over charcoal fire in the evening – fully documenting every “by chance, by luck” moment before Chef Lai’s dishes come to life. This is not just a culinary exploration, but an artistic practice about fate, timing, and creativity.
Photographer artist David Leung documented the entire process through his lens, using his unique “Pareidolic Vision” artistic method to transform the chef’s journey from market treasure hunting to cooking into unique photographic artworks installed on folding stools representing Hong Kong culture. This creative approach itself perfectly interprets the exhibition’s theme By Chance. By Luck – just like the wet market vendor’s saying “today’s fresh seafood will be gone tomorrow” – discovering beauty that each person might interpret differently from accidental forms.
This exhibition presents three series of limited edition artworks:
- Single Folding Stool Series – Images from fish market and charcoal seafood BBQ
- Double Folding Stool Series – Images from duo’s charcoal seafood BBQ
- Metal Plate Series – Images from Chef Lai’s ‘Forest Underbrush
