EVENT DESCRIPTION

In March 2024, Asia Art Archive (AAA) will present a new exhibition about a single day in Hong Kong’s art history and a lecture with Raqs Media Collective. The programmes highlight AAA’s ongoing research on the representation of archival time. Titled Another Day in Hong Kong, the exhibition brings together new works by six groups of Hong Kong artists and collectives, with materials from local archives, to look into one specific day in Hong Kong’s past. The exhibition will be on view at AAA’s library from 18 March to 31 August. On 27 March, Raqs Media Collective will speak at AAA’s Annual Artist’s Lecture, reflecting on the perception and representation of time.

Opening on 18 March, Another Day in Hong Kong borrows from precedents established by Oscar Ho’s 1990 exhibition, One Day in Hong Kong. The 1990 exhibition brought together photographs taken by citizens of Hong Kong on a single day, capturing the diverse lives of people and events that unfolded within those twenty-four hours.

The current exhibition expands upon it by exploring new dimensions. Another Day in Hong Kong uses archival materials as its starting point, and meticulously reconstructs one day from Hong Kong’s art historical past, examining what a day in and of art history could look like. Materials from AAA’s Hong Kong collections and other local archival resources are selected for display. The exhibition invites six groups of Hong Kong artists and collectives to create new works, offering personalised perspectives that represent different generations. The participating artists include Lee Ka Sing and Holly Lee, Siu King Chung, To & Ling Are Covering Their Ears (To Yeuk and Lai Chun Ling), Ocean Leung, Florence Lam, and KK Cheung. In addition, a series of programmes will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

This exhibition is part of AAA’s project Recalling Disappearance: Hong Kong Contemporary Art, a two-year project aiming to promote knowledge and awareness of Hong Kong contemporary art. It encompasses a wide range of activities and initiatives aimed at engaging the public and fostering a deeper understanding of the local art scene.

Hosted at AAA’s library on 27 March at 12pm, this year’s Annual Artist’s Lecture welcomes Raqs Media Collective as our guest speakers. Formed in New Delhi in 1992, Raqs Media Collective explores the intersection of contemporary art, philosophical speculation, and historical enquiry through films, publications, gatherings, lecture performances, and curatorial projects. In this lecture, Raqs Media Collective will reflect on their long-standing commitment to “kinetic contemplation,” especially in regards to interruptions, distortions, shifts, twists, and flows in the perception and representation of time in daily life, archives, and imagined timelines. They ask: Does time always flow forward, from point A to point B? Can time flow in a spiral? How long is “now”? Prior to the lecture, a brunch reception will be held from 11am–12pm. The reception and lecture are both free and open to the public with registration.
