EVENT DESCRIPTION
Wyndham Social is delighted to present Weight & Trace, a compelling joint exhibition featuring the evocative sculptures of Alex See and the intricate pen drawings of Simon Shingleton. Running from 8 May to 7 June 2026, the exhibition invites visitors on a journey into the shared emotional and formal landscapes of two artists who, through their distinct yet harmonised practices, explore the raw, unvarnished truth of the human spirit and the organic beauty of the unfolding self.
The exhibition centres on the thematic dialogue between “Weight” and “Trace,” capturing the essence of an artistic process that is as much about a meditative flow as it is about physical
manifestation. For both See and Shingleton, the act of creation serves as a conduit for vulnerability, authenticity, and a deep engagement with life’s inherent beauty amidst inner struggles. By breaking away from monochromatic traditions and subtly incorporating minimal colour, the artists navigate a collective passage towards a more nuanced lexicon of expression, where the body becomes a vessel for both personal odyssey and universal grace.
Alex See brings a unique perspective to the exhibition with sculptural works that embody a sense of profound vulnerability and the “nakedness” of inner truth. His practice is a meditative dance, a tangible whisper of a deeply personal journey through the graceful contours and evolving shapes of his medium. In eloquent counterpoint, figurative artist Simon Shingleton utilises the permanent and unyielding nature of the fineliners and markers to capture the intricate architecture of form. For Shingleton, the act of drawing is a therapeutic release—a deliberate departure from reason that allows a torrent of emotion to flow onto the canvas, often driven by the vibrant cadences of dance music to achieve a state of pure, uninhibited feeling.
Adding a dynamic layer to the exhibition, Wyndham Social will host a series of special events designed to foster deeper engagement with the artists’ processes. Two life drawing workshops will be held on 12 May and 27 May, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore the human form through the lens of the exhibition’s themes. Additionally, a panel conversation will take place on 16 May, providing a platform for a candid dialogue between the artists and the audience, delving into the inspirations and challenges that define their creative practices.
ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Hong Kong-based sculptor and fashion jewelry manufacturer Alex See combines ceramics, jewelry techniques, and metal work in his art. His recent work, inspired by seed forms, encourages reflections on life's possibilities. Alex begins from nothingness in his creative process, allowing intangible human values like freedom, acceptance and commitment to take shape.Alex See's approach to creating sculptures mirrors his approach to life. Through enquiry and practice, he aims to foster a personal connection and encourages viewers to explore their own existence and values.
He is a prominent contributor to the LGBT+ community and founded Hong Kong's first all-inclusive choir, The Harmonics.
Hong Kong-based figurative and expressive artist Simon Shingleton creates using permanent media, thus avoiding any temptation to erase: anxiety and reason are not to prevail over emotion and expression. He is particularly interested in the human face and form and looks to respond to the play of light upon them. He hopes his models see themselves and their essence when viewing the work.
Predominantly self-taught, with electronic music his soundtrack, he allows his hand to be guided by instinct and the fast movements to become a dance. His recent work sees him exploring oil stick and incorporating colour into his gestural pen work.
Working in the finance industry, Simon Shingleton is a father of four and they, and his adored wife, are often featured in his work.
