A Master Selection of Yangju Excerpts

30 June 2024 - 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This June, the acclaimed Yangju Opera Institute of Yangzhou highlights the diversity of traditional Yangju with a master selection of five excerpt performances. Led by Plum Blossom Award-winner Li Zhengcheng, the troupe presents a lively mix of martial arts and literary pieces, offering Hong Kong audiences a rare opportunity to enjoy this heritage regional form of xiqu.

Yangju is a traditional form of Chinese opera that originated in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, and was popular in Shanghai and Anhui. As a heritage art form, Yangju retains the lively atmosphere of folk arts and encompasses a variety of tunes and singing styles.

This showcase performance is recommended by the Plum Blossom Award Art Troupe of the China Theatre Association and part of this year’s Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chinese Theatre Cultural Festival.

On Friday 28 June, the Yangju Opera Institute of Yangzhou also presents the original production Officer Zheng Banqiao, with director and Plum Blossom Award-winner Li Zhengcheng in the title role.

Special-price combo tickets for audiences wishing to enjoy both performances are available here.
