300 Years of Cantonese Opera: Transition

13 March - 15 March

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Story of Wu Zixu is a two-part historical epic written and directed by Cantonese opera icon Yuen Siu-fai. The play recounts the extraordinary life of Wu Zixu—a noble official of the Spring and Autumn period in ancient China. After Wu’s father and brother are brutally executed, Wu goes into exile before rising to power in a rival state. But his loyalty to his lord eventually leads to his downfall at the hands of the state’s successor.

While romantic tales dominate Cantonese opera, The Story of Wu Zixu features spectacular fighting scenes as well as deeply affecting drama and intricate characterisation. The result is an exciting blend of stylised martial arts, poetic dialogue and superb acting, making the work both a visual and emotional tour de force.

Originally staged years ago and long since unseen, Wu Zixu has been carefully re-staged with updated sets and costumes. The production design blends the abstract simplicity of Cantonese opera (the classic “one table, two chairs” staging) with modern theatrical aesthetics, offering a visually striking experience for contemporary audiences.

The programme also features a curated selection of zhezixi (operatic excerpts) from classics during the golden age of Cantonese opera. Composed by some of the most well-known playwrights, these excerpts spotlight the skill, range and expressive grace of Cantonese opera. Ranging from romantic duets to action-filled martial arts scenes, the highlights include Dream of The Peony Pavilion, Murder in the Oratory and War Cape of Rouge and Blood. In particular, renowned Cantonese opera star Nam Fung will join Yuen Siu-fai in A Mismatched Couple, a stellar line-up not to be missed!
