EVENT DESCRIPTION
Co-created by Hong Kong pioneer contemporary choreographer Miranda Chin and action artist Frog King (Kwok Mang-ho), Dance Frog Tao is a cross-disciplinary dance-theatre work rooted in local Hong Kong sensibilities. Inspired by Frog King’s creative journey, it weaves Chinese cultural imagery, inventive movement, action art, multimedia installations, and live music into an immersive space where “human, dance, sound, image, and painting” interlace — exploring self, others, and nature through the frog’s cycle of transformation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Kwok Mang Ho (Frog King): Born in 1947, Kwok Mang Ho, widely known as "Frog King," stands as one of Hong Kong's most iconic and dynamic artistic figures. A pioneering conceptual and performance artist since the late 1960s, he has consistently pushed creative boundaries in Hong Kong and beyond. Trained in ink painting and calligraphy under master Lü Shoukun, Frog King was among the first contemporary Chinese artists to explore ink as a conceptual medium, integrating it into performance, multimedia installations, and happenings. His work uniquely blends Eastern and Western philosophies, reflecting his belief that "Art is Life, Life is Art." He transforms everyday objects—from conversations and menus to cityscapes and lost-in-translation idioms—into artistic raw materials. His iconic graffiti walls, featuring a mix of Chinese and English scripts ("Sandwich Font") and his smiling frog motif, create vibrant, interactive "Frogtopias." Since 1967, he has presented over 3,000 exhibitions and performances worldwide, including the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2015, M+ invited him to recreate his seminal 1979 "Plastic Bag Project," considered China's first performance art piece. His works are held in major museum and private collections, each embodying his visionary, utopian spirit.Miranda Chin: Miranda Chin is a pioneering figure in Hong Kong's contemporary dance scene. Since the 1970s, she has created a prolific body of nearly 100 works that synthesize Chinese cultural heritage with Western contemporary techniques. Her distinctive choreographic voice emerged from formal training in Chinese dance in Beijing and Martha Graham technique in New York. In 1989, she established her dance company, cementing her commitment to advancing Hong Kong's dance culture. Her acclaimed productions include "The Eternal Princess of a Fallen Kingdom" and the innovative "The Romance of the Dancing Brush & Ink," created in collaboration with a master ink painter. Chin's contributions have earned her numerous honors, including a prestigious Dancer of the Year Award (1989) and international recognition as one of the Top 100 Artists by Cambridge, UK (2017). She holds a doctoral degree and an MFA in Dance.
