EVENT DESCRIPTION

Founded and led by Mr. Taka Hirohama, the local jazz group Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is pleased to feature two jazz musicians at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre: renowned Japanese trombonist Tomoki Mitsuka on November 24th, and Italian saxophonist Emanuele Cisi on November 25th, leading the audience into a captivating world of jazz.

Founded in 1990, SNJO is currently Hong Kong’s longest established big band, composed of excellent international jazz musicians. For 35 years, they have become a cornerstone of the city’s jazz community, participating in events such as the annual Hong Kong Jazz Festival and regular jazz performances at the Fringe Club. The group continues to promote the tradition of swing jazz and swing dance, gradually gaining musical reputation locally and internationally.

On the evening of November 24th, Taka Hirohama will be leading SNJO in a performance with tenor trombonist Tomoki Mitsuka. Tomoki Mitsuka has been a prominent figure of several major Japanese bands since 1999, including the Jazz Trombone Quartet VOLTZ, and released 4 acclaimed CDs. Besides the success of his music career, he is also a sophisticated music educator in Japan. His performance will feature works by Salvador Camarata and Urbie Green, as well as several classic jazz pieces. Such as Tutti’s Trombones, Four Brothers, My Blue Heaven, 12th Street Rag, and Urbie Green’s famous rendition of I’m getting sentimental over you. As Maestro Tomoki Mitsuka and several trombonists push and pull the slides, the audience will slip into the unique, silky yet powerful tone of the beautiful trombone.

On the evening of November 25th, the distinguished self-taught Italian jazz musician, Emanuele Cisi will be performing his signature, tenor saxophone. Known for his “spontaneous exploration” of jazz and his unique compositional voice on the saxophone, he has been exploring jazz for more than 40 years. Throughout these years, he performed extensively in the European jazz scene, touring international stages in the United States, China, and South America, and has also collaborated with the Italian Consulate General in Hong Kong. In this collaboration with SNJO, he will perform pieces by Monteverdi and Ennio Morricone L’Orfeo, including Sì dolce é’l tormento and Theme from a Fistful of Dolars (Per un Pugno Di Dollari). Other pieces by Michael Buble, Stan Kenton, and Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Big Band will be performed as well, such as Cry Me a River, Malagueña, and Jumpin at the Woodside. Many more pieces will be reinterpreted through the exquisite playing of Cisi and the other musicians, to resonate with the audience by their delicate tones.

You may enjoy a 20% discount by getting two tickets, and you are welcomed to experience the timeless jazz nights with numerous passionate and world-class jazz musicians!
