EVENT DESCRIPTION

Karin Weber Gallery is excited to announce ‘Fragments in Flux; Abstractions by Tina Buchholtz’, celebrating this internationally renowned artist’s return to Hong Kong and first solo exhibition since 2015.

‘Fragments in Flux’ introduces recent works to capture highlights from Tina Buchholtz’ oeuvre and its evolution – from softer, pigmented intimately scaled pieces in her 2019 ‘Bowl’ series to her recent, confidently vibrant canvases from 2024. The artist remains consistent in her strongly physical technique, layering and scraping a range of materials from finest colour pigments to metals, glass and even gold leaf in their purest form.

While Buchholtz’s canvases strongly suggest ‘painting’, her works rarely encounter an actual paint brush. Her tool of choice is a spatula, which is harnessed for a variety of mark-making in her signature style: layered, spread, or finely outlined. Inspiration for her works is consistently found in the world around her, with a clearly visible connection to nature, and the occasional commentary on socio-political events, but also found further afield from encounters with different cultures and visualities.

One of the joys of Tina Buchholz’ canvases is their inherent dynamism and openness to interpretation. Says the artist: “A painting can trigger so many associations, link to music, personal memories and so much more. This is what I experience in conversations with viewers, collectors and mere onlookers.” ‘Fragments in Flux’ is a snapshot of this consistently versatile artist who is always ready to embrace new experiments and inspiration.
