Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to announce the exhibition “UNVEILING SOUTHEAST ASIA – Harmony in Diversity” in April. We are honored to present the artworks of four outstanding artists from the Southeast Asian region: Erthh, Dabi Arnasa, Gabriel Cheah and Meliantha Muliawan. This exhibition offers art lovers a unique and diverse perspective on the richness of colors and materials in the artworks, exploring the aesthetics of everyday life and personal memory.
Thai artist Erthh’s work explores the fusion of pop surrealism and the familiar world of cartoons. Inspired by his interest in cartoons, the artist depicts himself sitting amongst his favorite classic cartoon characters. Incorporating pop culture and creative forms, the model toys are presented in an over-the-top style, reflecting the joy of his childhood and inviting all viewers to relive the happy times of their childhood. Freud believed that dreams are a manifestation of the subconscious, an expression of inner desires and conflicts.
Bali-based artist Dabi Arnasa’s work offers a glimpse into his interpretation of dream imagery and experiences, whether his own or those of others. His artistic practice is deeply rooted in Balinese tradition, emphasizing the value of unity between contradictions. Dabi’s work captures the essence of dreams as both unusual and familiar experiences, reconstructing them as surrealist imagery on canvas.
Malaysian artist Gabriel Cheah’s work combines contemporary ceramics, crystal, sculpture and visual art. Using clay from his birthplace, he examines the historical sites of his hometown from the colonial era to the present day through sculptures and wall-mounted artworks, demonstrating the significance of the different stages of time and relating the artifacts to his origins.
Indonesian artist Meliantha Muliawan’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in careful observation of her surroundings, especially the presence of household objects. She uses these mundane objects as a starting point to explore their multiple functions and meanings in our daily lives. These objects are not only tools for living but also reflections of human behavior and microcosms of the social environment. Through her work, viewers are invited to think about the objects in their own daily lives, to reflect on their meanings and how they affect our behavior and social relationships.
