EVENT DESCRIPTION
Artspace K proudly presents “Fantasy in Fabric Fiber Art Exhibition by Danny Amazonas” from June 1, 2023 to September 10, 2023. Danny is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in the field of contemporary fiber art. His creations express mosaic collage which he developed into his distinct “Freehand Patchwork” style of fabric art. We are delighted to invite Danny to present 16 pieces of his latest works, some of which are specially created for this exhibition.
Danny, who has been active in the field of fiber art since 1990s, has never learned traditional patchwork technique. He was inspired by American photographic realistic artist Chuck Close and began to study the creation technique of mosaic collage. Under the influence of East and West, Danny uses fabric as a medium for creation. He layers fabrics like oil paint, using rotating cutters and needles as brushes. He became more and more sensitive to the images he wanted to present and their effect when deconstructed under the mosaic collage. Since 2012, Danny developed a series called ‘Freehand Patchwork’ which, while named “Freehand”, is actually an artist’s reach for a level of proficiency in aesthetic experience and creative skills. Danny’s works have been exhibited worldwide, including his exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, U.K. in 2022.
Danny uses at least 4,000 pieces of fabric to complete a piece of his work measuring about one square meter. By cutting the cloth randomly, he composes and reorganizes them into a new image. The unique colors, patterns and lines of the cloth can be clearly seen upon close look of the artwork. From a distance, however, they look like oil paintings, with varying thicknesses, depth, light change and three-dimensionality.
To provide better understanding and interest in fiber art, Artspace K will hold a lecture and a workshop during the exhibition period to introduce the various compositions of fiber art by knotting, winding, pleating, binding and weaving.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER
Born in Pingtung, Taiwan in 1947. Danny Amazonas moved to Brazil with his parents in 1962. After graduating from the Brazilian Academy of Art, he went to New York and started a career in floriculture until 1990. He decided to return to Taiwan in 2006. Upon a chance encounter with fabric, Danny regained his passion for art and artistic creation. He was inspired by American photographic realistic artist Chuck Close and began to study the creation technique of mosaic collage. The features of fabric inspired him to use a unique beauty to present his work, thus opening the way to his fiber art.Under the influence of East and West, Danny uses fabric as a medium for creation.
