SUMMARY:The Seven Year Itch
DESCRIPTION:To mark the seventh year of Boogie Woogie Photography\, we present a group show of our beloved artists who have followed us since we started in 2016. \nThis year\, the gallery has opened its passion for photography to other mediums. We are proud to present in the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang paintings\, sculptures\, collages\, etchings and – with the Kraemer gallery from Paris – exceptional 18th century French furniture and decorative arts. \nHong Kong is a welcoming hub for talents and we are grateful to host this milestone exhibition with artists from many different countries. Six of our seventeen artists exhibited will be in Hong Kong with us: \nLean Lui’s images explore themes of sensuality\, innocence and personal connection. The ideas of seduction\, intimacy and lust undergo a slow process of contamination from the outside\, transforming innocent fantasies\, paradigms of perfection and purity into the disconcerting experiences of fear\, desire\, pain and isolation that we\, as humans\, inevitably encounter in an imperfect world. \nPatrice Bodenand’s black and white photographs taken over two decades in Hong Kong open our eyes to the hidden scratches of our city and refer with humour to the graffiti series taken by the famous surrealist artist Brassaï in Paris in the thirties. \nThe “Monochrome Collection” is an exquisite assemblage of textured art pieces crafted by Elsa Jeandedieu. Rooted in Elsa’s observation of nature\, the white tondo we selected to showcase is the latest chapter of her artistic evolution. \nFelix Sze Chung Wong is observing Singapore city through its facades geometry series and distinctive tower-studded cityscape. \nDion Leung’s collages explore topics of rebellion and conflicts with a practice of realism. As a self-taught artist\, Dion is constantly looking for the expression of art in human interactions. \nFinally\, Stephen King’s recent meticulously composed large format prints of Scotland give us comfort and a sense of calm\, reflecting the magnificence and isolation of the Scottish landscape. \nBy appointment at info@bewephoto.com

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present “Capturing Life: The Photography of Willy Ronis”\, a solo exhibition by the renowned French photographer at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 16 September to 21 October 2023. The collection is presented together with 18th-century French museum-quality furniture and decorative art displayed by the Kraemer Gallery based in Paris. \nWilly Ronis (1910-2009) was a pioneer of humanist photography\, a movement that emerged in post-war France\, seeking to document the human condition with authenticity and empathy. \nThroughout his long and prolific career\, Ronis left precious visual memories of the twentieth century. Focused on documenting everyday life and people’s joy and sorrow\, he developed a unique style characterized by his deep sensitivity and ability to find poetry in the mundane. From the bustling streets of Paris to the intimate moments between lovers\, Ronis’ images offer a glimpse into the universal human experience. \nThis carefully curated exhibition of Ronis’ most iconic works is a rare selection from the private collection of Stephane Kovalsky\, Ronis’ grandson. DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “Reminiscence\,” a solo exhibition by Elsa Jeandedieu\, a Hong Kong-based muralist and visual artist\, at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 29 June to 22 July 2023. The exhibition is presented together with 18th-century French museum-quality furniture and decorative art displayed by the prestigious Kraemer Gallery from Paris. \nBorn and raised in southern France\, Elsa’s artistic journey began at a young age\, experimenting with various mediums and techniques. Her passion for painting was ignited by French art history and family background\, drawing inspiration from great artists – notably by the textures of French painter and sculptor Pierre Soulages or the use of colors by Mark Rothko and Piet Mondrian. Her signature style emerged as she honed her craft\, a harmonious blend of vibrant hues\, bold compositions\, and expressive brushstrokes. \nElsa has been expanding her creative talents and bringing her unique texture artworks and murals to Hong Kong\, Paris\, Italy\, and many other places. In the past twenty years\, her inspiring energy and creativity have resulted in hundreds of commissioned paintings and luxury art pieces for high-profile clients\, including CHANEL and other high fashion brands. \nAs she turns forty years old this year\, Elsa moves on to a new chapter and dedicates herself to artworks that reveal her inner voice. Her inaugural solo exhibition Reminiscence invites us to embark on a journey through her universe. As the exhibition title demonstrates\, Elsa’s painting brings the viewers to her childhood in a poetic way. \nElsa’s work is deeply rooted in personal experience\, exploring love\, family\, and memory themes. SUMMARY:Forever Godard Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Paying homage to the late French New Wave giant Jean-Luc Godard\, the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society will take film lovers on a transformative journey to rediscover the auteur’s ingenuity through a forest of images. \nThis unconventional multimedia exhibition will take place at the Boogie Woogie Photography Gallery in Wong Chuk Hang from 7 June to 21. \nThe exhibition comprises two segments. The first\, JLG by Raymond Cauchetier\, showcases film stills and behind-the-scenes photography by the legendary set photographer\, whose iconic pictures of the young Godard during the French New Wave period in the 1960s – including those for Breathless and A Woman is A Woman – beautifully captured the defining moment in cinema history. The second segment\, Living Projection: In Praise of the Image\, highlights lifestyle photography and an audiovisual journey of Godard’s final creative period by Swiss producer and collaborator Fabrice Aragno. Inspired by The Image Book\, this spatial and sensory passage immerses visitors into Godard’s universe of thought. \nAragno will personally participate in a panel discussion at the gallery on 9 June before giving a masterclass at the Hong Kong Arts Centre after the Goodbye to Language 3D screening to share his insights and experience working with the maestro with the Hong Kong audience. \nCo-presented with Alliance Française and supported by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau\, Swiss Films\, and Boogie Woogie Photography\, the exhibition is a highlight of the concurrent For Ever Godard tribute\, complementing a seminar and the screening of over 50 features and short films by Godard presented in the Cine Fan programme from May to July.

SUMMARY:On the Road
DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “On The Road\,” a group exhibition at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 18th March to 29th April 2023. \nOn this occasion\, we are pleased to announce the collaboration with Kraemer Gallery\, with notably\, on-show 18th-century antiques and artwork that provide a contrasting yet harmonious visual backdrop to the more modern photographic prints on display. \nThe exhibition title comes from American writer Jack Kerouac’s novel “On The Road” published in 1957. As the narrator says in the book: “Nothing behind me\, everything ahead of me\, as is ever so on the road.” The story depicts several youngsters setting out for road trips in the United States. They are immersed in a hedonistic atmosphere and pursue the freedom of life and soul while traveling across America. \nThe exhibition comprises fifteen Hong Kong and international photographers’ art- works about their journey\, including Raymond Cauchetier and Roger Ballen’s road trip images. These pictures are reminiscent of Jack Kerouac’s novel\, which demon- strates people’s lifestyles through various photographers’ perspectives. The photog- raphers also explore their inner world through the journey and lens. \n\n\n\n\nSal Paradise\, the main narrator in the book\, is admired for his friend Dean Moriar- ty’s carefree attitude and sense of adventure. They often drive on the road and ex- perience the joys and struggles encountered along the way. To a certain extent\, a car is a tool leading them to their journey of self-exploration. The young men under Roger Ballen’s lens have similarities. \nThe famous Woodstock Music Festival remains a symbol of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The 19-year-old college student Roger Ballen not only en- joyed music but also documented this spectacular festival on the spot. People were immersed in music with unrestrained joy. He captured a group of motorcyclists sit- ting on a car\, and their dress and motorbikes reflected the young people’s pursuit of alternative and venturesome spirit in that era. \nThe road trips advance the novel’s plot. It also inspired many photographers in their works\, such as Richard Avedon’s portrait series “In The American West.” As the pic- tures displayed in the exhibition\, Raymond Cauchetier captured cars driving on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Stephanie Cheng took an intimate portrait with an automobile parked on a California highway\, which witnessed an incredible American road journey with her close friend. \nIn the spring of 2018\, French photographer Isabelle Boccon-Gibod visited friends in Sun City\, a residential community of 5\,000 households with strict regulations\, which triggered her anxiety. The instant film images of the sun and the road she took dur- ing the journey relieved her stress. \n\n\n\n\nack Kerouac published his novel in 1957. By coincidence\, photographer James Chung bought his first camera almost simultaneously. The cars in the street are no- ticeable in his images\, which can be seen in Yau Leung’s pictures in the 1960s &1970s. Their photos demonstrate a different impression of old Hong Kong. \n\n\n\n\nIn addition\, Polish photographer Bogdan Konopka captured a dilapidated car on the streets of Wrocław\, which presents a sense of desolation. Under the lens of French photographers Willy Ronis and Sabine Weiss\, the black and white photos show a vehicle parked on Paris street and Champs Elysees. The readers will be impressed by Jacques Henri Lartigue’s image in the 1910s\, in which he captured a speeding race car in the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club of France. With all the pictures which are displayed\, everyone has their own “On The Road” story.

DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “Darkness & Light”\, a solo exhibition by Bogdan Konopka at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 4 February to 4 March 2023. \nLight is a driving force for photography\, but it might also be destructive. For Polish-born photographer Bogdan Konopka\, the great charm of photography comes from darkness and shadow. There is one more shadow that co-creates photography: the shadow of the author and of its time. The photographer directs images from darkness into light. \nBogdan is a master of black-and-white photography and Chiaroscuro. At first glance\, it is easy to be attracted by the bright light source in his images. When the viewers get accustomed to the darkness\, they will discover a world of greys and tiny details hidden in the shadow. Most of his images are contact prints\, created with the same size negative\, and audiences must appreciate them closely to understand the details in the small prints. \nBogdan is not only famous for his technique but also for the perception after traveling worldwide to confront different cultures. He was born in Poland\, lived in Paris\, and traveled all over Europe and China to record the different cities’ appearances through his lens. His photographs present a unique and recognizable style in natural landscapes or interior spaces. \nThe exhibition\, Darkness & Light\, demonstrates 26 of his black-and-white Hand-printed artworks\, including multiple series from the photographer. Living in Poland for decades\, Bogdan’s passion for photography dated from his youth\, and he captured street scenes in Polish cities such as Wrocław and Kraków. After moving to France\, he photographed shop entrances in Paris and interior spaces in libraries\, theaters\, and museums when traveling to Pas-de-Calais\, Angers\, Nice\, and several other cities. In the Théâtre de l’Odéon image\, the long exposure creates a bright white screen reminiscent of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Theaters series. Although they have similarities\, Bogdan is not exploring the passage of time but a dramatic light source in the dark. \nInstead of capturing fleeting moments\, Bogdan’s camera allows fragments of reality to emerge against dark backgrounds. He was devoid of people deliberately\, as if he was embarked on a solitary voyage. He takes photos with long-time exposure to efface the presence of people. A large-format camera enables him to make stunning contact prints\, and the black-and-white images bring a sense of tranquility and mystery. \nFor Bogdan\, the darkroom is where magic is born. He makes the silver gelatin contact prints by himself\, scratches on negatives to create unique patterns\, and paints with a brush dipped in developer on expired papers. This creative approach was inspired by the works of French poet and painter Henri Michaux. In his darkroom\, he isolates himself from the hustle and bustle\, and his experiments’ inseparable companion and inspiration is music. Bogdan named this series of works “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik\,” which is reminiscent of Mozart’s Serenade. \nA shadow is an absence of light. Bogdan’s work is not only about darkness and light. His portraits are also mysterious. “Tyłem- Dos au Mur” (Backwards\, Against the Wall) combines nine images photographed with a simple and consistent white background. He captures the backs of different people\, and the photo grid collage strengthens the mystery and imagination.

SUMMARY:Takeshi Shikama: Contemplations
DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “Contemplations”\, a solo exhibition by Takeshi Shikama at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 10 December 2022 to 20 January 2023. \nBorn in Tokyo in 1948\, Takeshi Shikama taught himself photography but never expected to be a photographer at the beginning. One day in early autumn 2001\, as twilight set in\, Shikama got lost in the mountain paths. Attracted by the darkness of the undergrowth\, he found himself suddenly seized with a strong desire to take photographs. He set out to the same place again with a camera the following day\, trying to capture the enigmatic feeling that animates him. This experience made him realize that he was not taking pictures of the woods out of his will but that the forest was inducing him to take its portraits. Since then\, Shikama turned to photography after a lengthy career as a designer and never stopped photographing forests in Japan\, the United States\, and Europe. \nLooking back\, he feels that this all began with the decision to build a mountain lodge with his hands. To clear a plot of land for constructing a lodge inside a small forest\, Shikama had to fell Japanese red pine trees some eighty years old. Although many years have elapsed since then\, he still vividly remembers the feeling as he sat astride the felled-down trees\, stripping them of their barks. \nOwing to the invaluable experience of spending the next ten years building the cottage\, his sensitivity towards nature came to be fully awakened. Lured by this mysterious sensation\, Shikama started to travel all over Japan\, visiting the depth of forests and continuing to take photographs. \nShikama always carries cameras when traveling. He is curious how the lens will capture the air in various places in different countries. Unlike the rapid snapping of pictures that most people experience\, an image is photographed one at a time. The large format camera with 4×5 inches film makes him possible to record the details and gives him more time to contemplate while setting the camera. He also likes the square format. The Hasselblad camera with 6×6 cm film is more convenient and suitable for capturing fleeting moments. \nThe exhibition Contemplations comprises 32 of Shikama’s images captured worldwide\, including the winter scenery in Japan\, the magnificent Yosemite National Park in California\, the Isle of Skye in Scotland\, and urban forests in Hong Kong\, Taiwan\, and France. \nBreathe in\, breathe out\, and listen for the silence. As the exhibition title depicts\, Shikama’s images of the forest and trees guided us through a visual contemplation that unlocks a journey toward discovering the nature of silence. Shikama wrote:”the forest always stands there\, motionless in total stillness. This is the image I have always had of the forest. It has dawned upon me that the forest is\, in fact\, the home of numerous silent and peaceful activities”. \nIt is not just the trees and plants matter\, but also the process of making the image from start to finish that is part of the journey. Shikama attaches as much importance to the details of the image as to the photographic object. His photographs are made in Japan and are both stunning and tranquil. He uses the platinum/palladium technique on handmade Gampi paper\, which is traditional Japanese paper made of Gampi tree bark\, giving the prints a natural sepia tone. \nHe applies the emulsion by hand to each sheet\, exposes the negative by contact\, then reveals the image and fixes it chemically. This painstaking process requires mastery and attention that reflects the artist’s reverence for his subjects. The Gampi paper brings a unique and precious quality to each print\, and its tone gives softness to the photo and reinforces the “stillness” of the forest in the final image.\nFascinated by the forest enveloped in natural and simple air\, we hope these images in this exhibition can lead the viewers into Takeshi Shikama’s photography and meditation world. DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “My Hong Kong\, 我城 (Part II)”\, a group exhibition at the Loft in Wong Chuk Hang from 15 October to 27 November 2022. \nEvery city has its own story to tell. More stories are yet to be told in a vibrant and bustling city like Hong Kong. Following the success of the exhibition “My Hong Kong\, 我城”\, we are thrilled to present Part II\, comprising eleven Hong Kong and international photographers’ artworks about the city. \nEveryone sees and feels the city from their perspective. People who have been to Hong Kong at different ages always have a reason to fall in love with the city. On display are Raymond Cauchetier and James Chung’s cityscapes from the 1950s and young talents’ impressions of Hong Kong. \nEven though Cauchetier and Chung lived in different worlds\, they had similar paths. They were both self-taught photographers and recorded Hong Kong’s street scenes nearly seventy years ago. Their images reflect people’s simple life at that time. Later\, in the 1960s\, Cauchetier became a set photographer for the French New Wave and Chung for Hong Kong films. With the passing of Jean-Luc Godard in September this year\, Cauchetier’s photographs brought back vivid memories of the French New Wave director\, which left a critical testimony of the golden era. \nHong Kong is a charismatic city. Whether in the movies or the reality\, this place always attracted and fascinated visitors. The exhibition not only presents the city’s past and present but also embraces the city’s diversity through the photographers’ eyes. DESCRIPTION:Boogie Woogie Photography & PhotogStory are pleased to present “My Hong Kong\, 我城”\, a group exhibition at the Loft Wong Chuk Hang\, from 3 September to 15 October 2022. \nEvery city has its own story to tell. In a vibrant and bustling city like Hong Kong\, more stories are yet to be told. For Boogie Woogie Photography and PhotogStory\, Photography brought us together. Although we have different backgrounds\, we share the same passion for photography and fondness for this city.\nWe met several years ago at an Art Fair\, and now we’re thrilled to curate this exhibition\, “My Hong Kong\, 我城”\, in Wong Chuk Hang. \n“My Hong Kong\, 我城”\, comprises thirteen Hong Kong and international photographers’ artworks about the city. On display are Raymond Cauchetier and James Chung’s cityscapes from the 1950s as well as young talents’ impressions of Hong Kong. These images not only present the city’s past and present but also embrace the city’s diversity through the photographers’ eyes. We hope you enjoy the exhibi- tion as we enjoy the city that we’re much-loved. \nEveryone sees and feels the city from their perspective. People who have been to Hong Kong at dif- ferent ages always have a reason to fall in love with the city. Under the lens of James Chung and French photographer Raymond Cauchetier\, there is street scenery full of Chinese characters\, reflecting people’s simple life at that time. Even though Chung and Cauchetier lived in different worlds\, they had similar fates. Both were self-taught photographers and recorded Hong Kong’s street scene nearly seventy years ago. Later\, they became set photographers\, respectively for Hong Kong Films and for the French New Wave in the 1960s. Their photographs left a critical testimony of the golden era. \nHong Kong’s architecture also reflects the city’s character. Chun Wai photographed buildings with rounded corners\, a practical architectural style popular in the post-war. Under the lens of Dustin Shum\, a ping pong table painted in bright green in Shun on Estate is reminiscent of American director Wes Anderson’s movies\, at first glance. Yet\, the bright colors contrasted with the mottled ground if you look closely\, revealing the refurbishment in public housing estates\, where the city’s low-income residents live. \nPhotographer Felix Wong focuses on skyscrapers\, extracting the background and apparent characteristics of the buildings\, and simply presenting its aesthetics with geometric lines. \nHong Kong is known for its distinctive tower-studded cityscape. The high-rise buildings captured by photographers Stephen King and Thierry Cohen present a typical overlook of the city. Thierry Cohen combined stars shot separately from remoted deserts to the Victoria Harbour night scene with digital techniques\, to give the cityscape a romantic and surreal look. Although Hong Kong is full of skyscrapers\, nature is not far from the city. Japanese photographer Takeshi Shikama captured this urban jungle. The photographs are hand-printed on Japanese handmade Ganpi paper with the ancient platinum technique. His images demonstrate the city’s rarely seen elegant silent beauty. \nHong Kong is a charismatic city. Whether in the movies or the reality\, this place always attracted and fascinated visitors. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese ZODIAC is represented by twelve animals. In order\, they are: the Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Rabbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Goat\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Pig… \nThis exhibition showcases twelve of Roger Ballen’s photographs. In black & white or colour\, each animal is represented – some of these iconic images have already been collected by many important museums. \nFor the first time\, the photographic work of Roger Ballen is seen together with the sculptures and installations of Andrew Luk. Serendipitously\, both were born in the USA\, although nearly forty years apart. \nHong Kong-based artist Andrew Luk joins us under this theme with his new installation ‘Refrigerator of Curious Cosmologies’ and\, in ‘Forbidden’\, incorporating a series of six previously unseen sculptures of durian fruits. \nIt has been a joy to have played a part in the birth of these creations\, watching a young talent react to the inspirational dialogue with a legendary artist.
