DESCRIPTION:This July\, TechBox returns to Freespace with LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project\, a participatory theatre experience that transforms The Box into a human arcade game lab. \nBlending elements of gameplay and performance\, LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project invites the audience to become players in a clash of ideas. Entering this liminal space – at an unspecified mid-way stage of a complex\, ongoing and possibly rigged process – players are presented with scenarios and actions\, and one simple question: to play or not to play. \nDevised by Ip Yuk-yiu\, a media artist known for incorporating computer games into his creative works\, LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project explores game as method and metaphor in experimental performance. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate five years of ground-breaking performances at Freespace with a bold and exquisitely choreographed spectacle of extreme urban sports\, street dance and live music – Asian premiere. \nIn 2024\, as urban sports enter the Paris Olympics\, the artistry of street skills is spotlighted on stage with Amsterdam-based ISH Dance Collective’s Elements of Freestyle. \nPresented as part of Freespace’s fifth anniversary celebrations\, Elements of Freestyle is a bold\, high-energy spectacle that blends the tricks and physicality of breakdance\, in-line skating\, skateboarding\, freestyle basketball\, BMX and freerunning with the discipline of the theatre. Featuring an original musical score and live electronic and orchestral strings\, it transforms the ecstasy and freedom of the street into an eye-opening and exquisitely choreographed form of urban dance. \nPerformed on a set that feels as alive as the performers\, with landscapes of scaffolding and ramps dismantled and reconfigured before our eyes\, the show is a swirling blend of adrenaline\, artistry\, powerful live music and the poetic brotherhood of the streets. \nElements of Freestyle is directed and choreographed by Marco Gerris\, artistic director of ISH Dance Collective and ex-jury member of So You Think you Can Dance. The production features an acclaimed cast of ten performers – breakdancers\, freerunners\, skaters\, a BMXer and a basketball freestyle juggler – along with live music performed on stage by cellist Annie Tangberg and violinist Vera van der Bie. \nIn addition to the stage performances\, members of the ISH Dance Collective artistic team will lead three workshops targeting both experienced practitioners and children. On 26 June (Wednesday)\, Denden Karadeniz and Sven Boekhorst will lead\, respectively\, a professional workshop on contemporary x breakdance floor work for experienced dancers aged 16 and over\, and a session on inline skating techniques for experienced inline skaters aged 14 and over. SUMMARY:The BOOK OF LONGING
DESCRIPTION:A complex and intoxicating meeting of two musical legends: Philip Glass\, one of the most significant contemporary composers in the classical music world\, and the famous Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. For over 6 years had the two talked about a collaboration of poetry and music. When Glass and Cohen came together in Los Angeles\, Cohen read the whole manuscript of his poetry book\, Book of Longing\, to Glass. Glass found the poems “intensely beautiful\, personal\, and inspiring”\, and proposed “an evening-length work of poetry\, music and image based on this work.” \nIn 2007\, Book of Longing was premiered. 22 of the 167 poems from the poetry book were set to music. It is a sampling of Cohen’s poems that touch on romance\, biography\, balladry\, the dharma\, limericks\, and rhymes. Cohen called the work “Glassical”. \nThe Hong Kong Premiere\, brought to life by two much sought-after artists\, director Mo Lai Yan Chi and conductor Vivian Ip\, seeks to transcend boundaries with a mesmerizing dialogue between music and theatre. DESCRIPTION:This February\, join the musicians of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and mark the end of the Lunar New Year festivities with an evening of contemporary pieces demonstrating the versatility of the sheng. \nOne of the oldest musical instruments in China\, the sheng – a mouth-blown free-reed gourd instrument with multiple bamboo pipes – has a distinctive\, expressive sound. Often used as an accompaniment to Chinese opera performances and festivals\, the sheng is rarely played as a solo instrument and there are few compositions created specifically for sheng players. \nIn this concert\, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra sheng ensemble presents a diverse repertoire of solo and ensemble pieces composed by Principal Sheng Chen Yi-Wei and other musicians – showcasing the evocative sounds of this traditional instrument and highlighting the vibrant talents of a new generation of sheng musicians.

SUMMARY:WestK x Rooftop Productions: Songs of Innocence and Experience
DESCRIPTION:Devised and created by Rooftop Productions and the young artists of HKAPA’s School of Drama\, Songs of Innocence and Experience is a vibrant\, multidisciplinary work around the stories of a group of young people negotiating their path to adulthood in contemporary Hong Kong. \nThrough a fragmented montage of theatre\, live original music\, high culture and pop culture references\, camera play and projections from Blake’s illustrated versions of Paradise Lost\, the production offers a lively\, humorous and poignant reflection on the drive and passions of youth. \nSongs of Innocence and Experience takes its name from the work of William Blake\, and inspiration from John Milton’s Paradise Lost and Areopagitica. Contemplating the eternal struggles of youth – between respecting authority and wanting freedom\, and forging meaningful new pathways as emerging adults – the production plays with the angel-devil duality of Milton’s work\, and the hybridity of contemporary Hong Kong society\, to explore individual and universal journeys to self-identity. \nFirst staged at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2022\, the production has been developed and adapted for The Box. The new production features a revised script\, original and new ensemble and band members\, and enhanced scenography and projection design.

Despite its partial title reference to ‘death’\, Lam aspires for the audience to experience from the experimental theatre a transformed perspective on separation and existence\, encouraging viewers to seek new meanings and answers within the concept of ‘living’. \nThe 90-minute performance blends dance\, installations\, text\, live videos and electronic music into an immersive experience for the audience. The multidisciplinary production features Dance Artists not only performing contemporary dances\, but also presenting a series of spectacular and unconventional performances\, weaving multiple narratives within the same space. \nIn redefining the viewing experience\, the creative team has turned the theatre space into a ‘laboratory’. Each audience member becomes a ‘laboratory technician’\, free to observe and wander through different areas\, and to select their viewing distance based on personal psychological comfort or preference\, thus engaging in a thought experiment. Inside The Big Box\, both the body and the mind are granted infinite possibilities. The audience is invited to envision their future life journey\, experiencing a sense of rebirth akin to emerging from a cocoon. Living Up/噏 to Death is crafted to create unique stories for each individual\, underscoring the power of life.

SUMMARY:HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the “HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform” (HOTPOT) returns as part of the City Contemporary Dance Festival – celebrating regional artistic exchange with presentations by artists from East Asia regions. HOTPOT Japan showcases two performances by contemporary artists at Freespace: Da Dad Dada by Saori Hala and ZOU made from fume by Ikumi Kurosu. \nDa Dad Dada is an autobiographical performance on the theme of absence. Conceived\, designed and performed by Saori Hala\, it delves into the artist’s connection with her absentee father\, 1960s musical dance artist Ken Hara. ZOU made from fume is a dark and otherworldly piece choreographed\, directed and performed by Ikumi Kurosu\, founder of dance company BUSHMAN. The work explores the possibilities of the body in motion as it shifts between physicality and essence\, and human and animal forms.

DESCRIPTION:In times of trouble\, what can we learn from each other’s experience\, how can we gain wisdom and can we find love in the midst? \nIn January this year\, award-winning screen veteran Elaine Jin and musical theatre stars Margaret Cheung and Jordan Cheng explored loss and longing through a game of mahjong in the work-in-progress presentation of Hard Times. After half a year of feedback collection and evaluation\, the team is back with a full-scale presentation this September that looks at suffering in a humorous and bittersweet light. \nMoving to a bigger venue in The Box\, director Edward Lam once again creates a highly experimental work. With a greater focus on the music element\, Lam has invited Harris Ho to join the production as music director and compose several new pieces. Together with video projection and live music\, the team hopes to share with the audience an innovative form of theatre that combines singing and acting. \nUsing intangible cues on stage\, the performers are encouraged to lay bare their innermost feelings and life experience.
