SUMMARY:Harmonia
DESCRIPTION:A provocative and intriguing exploration of the possibilities and limits of different bodies \nTender and demanding\, this groundbreaking choreography by Hungarian choreographer Adrienn Hód and the Unusual Symptoms dance company of Theatre Bremen\, Germany invites us to take a fresh look at the human body and its meaning in dance and society. \nBetween shared explorations of physical diversity\, joyful exuberance and a helping of self-irony\, an ensemble of dancers with and without disabilities question the hierarchies of classical dance and the supposedly progressive forms of contemporary dance. Asking for the undisturbed attention of the audience\, they dismantle conventional notions of the body\, and the structures built around it\, and set about playfully realigning our gaze. \nA thought-provoking and intriguing work\, Harmonia challenges audience preconceptions\, demands intense stamina from the dancers\, and builds slowly and steadily from an unconventional opening to a joyous\, celebratory climax. \nHarmonia premiered in Bremen\, Germany in 2022. It was named Best Work at the 2023 Rudolf Laban Award in Hungary\, and was selected for Tanzplattform Deutschland 2024\, making it one of the ten most representative dance works in Germany for that year. \nDate and Time\n21/3/2026 (Sat) 8pm*\n22/3/2026 (Sun) 3pm* \n* Post-performance Meet-the-Artist Session \nApprox. 105 minutes with no interval\nThe performance contains nudity.\nIndividuals under 12 years old will not be admitted.

SUMMARY:Black Box Music
DESCRIPTION:HKNME is thrilled to present Simon Steen-Andersen’s Black Box Music as a cornerstone of our GAME\PLAY initiative. This innovative work typifies Steen-Andersen’s interdisciplinary approach\, blending various artistic expressions and defying conventional genre boundaries. Conducted by a percussionist via a live video feed\, Black Box Music critiques and reimagines the act of conducting as a form of puppet theatre\, humorously deconstructing traditional hierarchical dynamics between conductor and musicians. \nThis performance marks a significant premiere\, bringing Steen-Andersen’s vision to Hong Kong and fostering a dialogue between Western avant-garde practices and the region’s rich cultural backdrop. Accompanying this\, curator Daniel Lo will present a newly commissioned piece that resonates with Steen-Andersen’s themes\, further exploring the relationship between the music produced and the musicians’ performing gestures\, as well as the connection between the audience’s sonic and visual experiences.

SUMMARY:The Story of K City
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre combines text and art tech in a unique immersive theatre production. Following the 2017 production of Buried Child\, the HKRep invites Travis Preston to return to direct The Story of K City\, Based on the fantasy novella by HKRep Artistic Director Poon Wai Sum. Together they create a new stage aesthetic in an all-round sensory experience. \nThe Story of K City traces a dream-like journey of the character Forget-Me-Not\, who bears witness to the relationship between a city and its people\, touching on childhood and fleeting fun times\, the sorrow of being forgotten and the feeling of being alone. In this work\, audiences can find hope\, indifference or peace amidst a city’s hustle and bustle. Deconstructing the text as devised theatre\, this show uses real-time video\, 3D soundscape\, motion tracking and AI image processing to enrich stage aesthetics. \nDate & Time:\n29\, 31/7\, 1-2\, 4\, 6-8/8/2025 8pm\n2#-3\, 9-10/8/2025 3pm \n#with post-performance talk \nThis programme is funded under the Arts Technology Funding Pilot Scheme by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. \nPresented in Cantonese

SUMMARY:Nothing Really Happened
DESCRIPTION:Nothing Really Happened is an animated film directed by Mufasa Yu\, which features original music by Clave. It will first be screened in the form of an audiovisual performance. \nIn Nothing Really Happened\, six chapters of the film oscillate between what is lost and what is found across the same ancestral plane. Images rearrange themselves spontaneously in transition towards chaos and reunion\, until they no longer move or rest\, become or dissolve. There is everything to see yet nothing there\, but briefly in transit you might have already experienced all of it\, all at once. \nThe show is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

SUMMARY:Songs of the Wayfarer
DESCRIPTION:Scotland-based performer Claire Cunningham explores what can be learned from those of us who reach for the ground through crutches\, as four-legged creatures. \nIn her new solo work\, Songs of the Wayfarer\, Cunningham delves into the choreography of crip* navigation – the experience of moving through the world and natural environment as a disabled person. Using and misusing her crutches as an extension of her dancing body\, she examines the act of journeying. Drawing inspiration from the world of mountaineering\, explorers and expeditioners\, and from Gustav Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” (Songs of a Wayfarer)\, Cunningham invites us to pay closer attention to the ways we navigate both familiar and unfamiliar landscapes and profound loss and change in our lives. \nOne of the UK’s most acclaimed and internationally renowned disabled artists\, Cunningham creates work informed by the lived experience of disability\, and by crip\, queer and feminist thinking. Investigating personal questions with universal resonances\, she explores the potentiality of her specific physicality\, crafting a unique vocabulary riddled with dark humour that challenges conventions around virtuosity\, classical aesthetic and dance. \n*Crip is a political and cultural identity embraced by some disabled individuals. \n7 March 2025 (Fri)\, 8pm\n8 March 2025 (Sat)\, 8pm\n9 March 2025 (Sun)\, 5pm \nNo Limits is co-presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

SUMMARY:TechBox 2024: LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project
DESCRIPTION:This July\, TechBox returns to Freespace with LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project\, a participatory theatre experience that transforms The Box into a human arcade game lab. \nBlending elements of gameplay and performance\, LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project invites the audience to become players in a clash of ideas. Entering this liminal space – at an unspecified mid-way stage of a complex\, ongoing and possibly rigged process – players are presented with scenarios and actions\, and one simple question: to play or not to play. \nDevised by Ip Yuk-yiu\, a media artist known for incorporating computer games into his creative works\, LEVEL 66 – The Arcade Project explores game as method and metaphor in experimental performance. The work was created in collaboration with students\, teachers and graduates from the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts\, as well as the Technical and Production Team at West Kowloon Cultural District. \n28 July 2024 (Sunday)\n3:00pm \n1–3 August 2024 (Thursday to Saturday)\n8:00pm \n3–4 August 2024 (Saturday\, Sunday)\n3:00pm \nApproximately 120 minutes without intermission

On 26 June (Wednesday)\, Denden Karadeniz and Sven Boekhorst will lead\, respectively\, a professional workshop on contemporary x breakdance floor work for experienced dancers aged 16 and over\, and a session on inline skating techniques for experienced inline skaters aged 14 and over. In addition\, Marco Gerris will lead a street dance-inspired creative movement workshop for children aged 9 to 12 on 29 June (Saturday). \n28 and 29 June 2024 – 8:00pm\n \n30 June 2024 – 3:00pm

SUMMARY:The BOOK OF LONGING
DESCRIPTION:A complex and intoxicating meeting of two musical legends: Philip Glass\, one of the most significant contemporary composers in the classical music world\, and the famous Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen. For over 6 years had the two talked about a collaboration of poetry and music. When Glass and Cohen came together in Los Angeles\, Cohen read the whole manuscript of his poetry book\, Book of Longing\, to Glass. Glass found the poems “intensely beautiful\, personal\, and inspiring”\, and proposed “an evening-length work of poetry\, music and image based on this work.” \nIn 2007\, Book of Longing was premiered. 22 of the 167 poems from the poetry book were set to music. It is a sampling of Cohen’s poems that touch on romance\, biography\, balladry\, the dharma\, limericks\, and rhymes. Cohen called the work “Glassical”. \nThe Hong Kong Premiere\, brought to life by two much sought-after artists\, director Mo Lai Yan Chi and conductor Vivian Ip\, seeks to transcend boundaries with a mesmerizing dialogue between music and theatre. Get away from the busy and stressful city life of Hong Kong\, immerse yourself in a captivating exploration of profound longings and delve into the innermost cries of the soul. \n10–11 May 2024 (Friday to Saturday)\n8:00pm \n12 May 2024 (Sunday)\n2:30pm

SUMMARY:WestK x Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra: Free Reed Sounds
DESCRIPTION:This February\, join the musicians of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and mark the end of the Lunar New Year festivities with an evening of contemporary pieces demonstrating the versatility of the sheng. \nOne of the oldest musical instruments in China\, the sheng – a mouth-blown free-reed gourd instrument with multiple bamboo pipes – has a distinctive\, expressive sound. Often used as an accompaniment to Chinese opera performances and festivals\, the sheng is rarely played as a solo instrument and there are few compositions created specifically for sheng players. \nIn this concert\, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra sheng ensemble presents a diverse repertoire of solo and ensemble pieces composed by Principal Sheng Chen Yi-Wei and other musicians – showcasing the evocative sounds of this traditional instrument and highlighting the vibrant talents of a new generation of sheng musicians.

SUMMARY:WestK x Rooftop Productions: Songs of Innocence and Experience
DESCRIPTION:Devised and created by Rooftop Productions and the young artists of HKAPA’s School of Drama\, Songs of Innocence and Experience is a vibrant\, multidisciplinary work around the stories of a group of young people negotiating their path to adulthood in contemporary Hong Kong. \nThrough a fragmented montage of theatre\, live original music\, high culture and pop culture references\, camera play and projections from Blake’s illustrated versions of Paradise Lost\, the production offers a lively\, humorous and poignant reflection on the drive and passions of youth. \nSongs of Innocence and Experience takes its name from the work of William Blake\, and inspiration from John Milton’s Paradise Lost and Areopagitica. Contemplating the eternal struggles of youth – between respecting authority and wanting freedom\, and forging meaningful new pathways as emerging adults – the production plays with the angel-devil duality of Milton’s work\, and the hybridity of contemporary Hong Kong society\, to explore individual and universal journeys to self-identity. \nFirst staged at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2022\, the production has been developed and adapted for The Box. The new production features a revised script\, original and new ensemble and band members\, and enhanced scenography and projection design.

SUMMARY:Living Up/噏 to Death
DESCRIPTION:Living Up/噏 to Death\, choreographed and directed by Ivanhoe Lam\, endeavors to bridge the realms of dance and life through the creative team’s collaboration with the ‘Silent Teachers’ Body Donation Program\, alongside archive research. Central to the conception of the work\, Lam suggests “Leaving is merely another beginning”. In view of the universal yet personal finality of life\, he emphasizes the significance of how the living honor and continue the legacies of their predecessors. Despite its partial title reference to ‘death’\, Lam aspires for the audience to experience from the experimental theatre a transformed perspective on separation and existence\, encouraging viewers to seek new meanings and answers within the concept of ‘living’. \nThe 90-minute performance blends dance\, installations\, text\, live videos and electronic music into an immersive experience for the audience. The multidisciplinary production features Dance Artists not only performing contemporary dances\, but also presenting a series of spectacular and unconventional performances\, weaving multiple narratives within the same space. \nIn redefining the viewing experience\, the creative team has turned the theatre space into a ‘laboratory’. Each audience member becomes a ‘laboratory technician’\, free to observe and wander through different areas\, and to select their viewing distance based on personal psychological comfort or preference\, thus engaging in a thought experiment. Inside The Big Box\, both the body and the mind are granted infinite possibilities. The audience is invited to envision their future life journey\, experiencing a sense of rebirth akin to emerging from a cocoon. Living Up/噏 to Death is crafted to create unique stories for each individual\, underscoring the power of life.

SUMMARY:HerStory
DESCRIPTION:First staged in 2007\, HerStory is an award-winning original work by internationally renowned Hong Kong choreographer Helen Lai\, and the final piece in Lai’s “Women’s Trilogy” series. \nHerStory takes inspiration from Nüshu\, the ancient written language developed and used exclusively by women in rural areas of Hunan province\, as well as the contemporary prose of Xi Xi and Wong Bik-wan\, two women authors from Hong Kong. SUMMARY:HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the “HOTPOT East Asia Dance Platform” (HOTPOT) returns as part of the City Contemporary Dance Festival – celebrating regional artistic exchange with presentations by artists from East Asia regions. HOTPOT Japan showcases two performances by contemporary artists at Freespace: Da Dad Dada by Saori Hala and ZOU made from fume by Ikumi Kurosu. \nDa Dad Dada is an autobiographical performance on the theme of absence. Conceived\, designed and performed by Saori Hala\, it delves into the artist’s connection with her absentee father\, 1960s musical dance artist Ken Hara. ZOU made from fume is a dark and otherworldly piece choreographed\, directed and performed by Ikumi Kurosu\, founder of dance company BUSHMAN. The work explores the possibilities of the body in motion as it shifts between physicality and essence\, and human and animal forms.

SUMMARY:Hard Times
DESCRIPTION:In times of trouble\, what can we learn from each other’s experience\, how can we gain wisdom and can we find love in the midst? \nIn January this year\, award-winning screen veteran Elaine Jin and musical theatre stars Margaret Cheung and Jordan Cheng explored loss and longing through a game of mahjong in the work-in-progress presentation of Hard Times. After half a year of feedback collection and evaluation\, the team is back with a full-scale presentation this September that looks at suffering in a humorous and bittersweet light. \nMoving to a bigger venue in The Box\, director Edward Lam once again creates a highly experimental work. With a greater focus on the music element\, Lam has invited Harris Ho to join the production as music director and compose several new pieces. Together with video projection and live music\, the team hopes to share with the audience an innovative form of theatre that combines singing and acting. \nUsing intangible cues on stage\, the performers are encouraged to lay bare their innermost feelings and life experience. They learn from each other\, complement each other\, and create an “organic theatre work” that is ephemeral but enduring in our memories. \n23 September 2023 (Saturday)\n8:00pm \n24 September 2023 (Sunday)\n4:30pm \n29 September 2023 (Friday)\n8:00pm \n30 September 2023 (Saturday)\n8:00pm \n1 October 2023 (Sunday)\n4:30pm

Moving away from the AI-generated audio-visuals of last year’s work-in-progress presentation\, the event explores stage applications of media technologies and sophisticated soundscapes\, combining video and live performance in an audio-visual adventure. \nWith Young’s scores played live against a backdrop of video\, The Travellers and The Listeners offers a surreal journey into the unknown – a sensorial experience shaped by experimentations in sound\, lighting and moving image. \nEach performance consists of a cyclical structure looping over a period of three hours. The audience are free to enter or leave the venue at any point during that time. \n17\, 21–23 July 2023 (Monday\, Friday–Sunday)\n7:30pm–10:30pm
