SUMMARY:Dissecting the Square. Colours and Black by Alexander James
DESCRIPTION:PhillipsX\, the selling exhibition platform operated by Phillips’ global Private Sales team\, is proud to present Dissecting the Square. Colours and Black by Alexander James. Showcasing a major new body of work\, the selling exhibition marks a significant moment for the British-born multimedia artist\, whose practice spans painting\, sculpture\, video\, and installation. A graduate of Camberwell College of Arts in London\, James has exhibited internationally in London\, Paris\, and New York\, and is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most compelling voices of his generation. \nThe exhibition’s title originates from a formative moment in James’s studio. Recalling an early morning when sunlight sharply divided an empty canvas\, James describes how the light was “literally dissecting the square.” This moment became the conceptual starting point for the series\, framing the canvas as both a physical structure and a symbolic boundary. Dissecting the Square. Colours and Black by Alexander James brings together a new series of works in which the act of dissecting the square plays a pivotal role\, both formally and conceptually. At the core of James’s practice is an ongoing exploration of the square as a site of fragmentation\, repetition\, structure\, and possibility. \nAlexander James’s new body of work is grounded in a rich art-historical lineage\, engaging with artists who have explored\, challenged\, and redefined the square as one of abstraction’s most enduring forms. His practice enters a conceptual dialogue with the legacies of Josef Albers\, Richard Diebenkorn\, and Sean Scully\, among others\, while remaining distinctly his own. \nThe influence of Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square series is especially resonant. Like Albers\, James uses the square as a formal structure through which perception is destabilized and reassembled. Yet where Albers explored chromatic relationships with rigorous restraint\, James expands the form into expressive\, psychologically charged compositions. While rooted in abstraction\, James’s paintings are equally informed by portraiture and the fragmented presence of the human figure. Drawing from personal archives\, recorded memories\, and everyday observations\, faces and Alexander James bodily forms emerge as psychological traces rather than literal representations. Often obscured or incomplete\, these figures reflect the artist’s enduring interest in memory\, perception\, and the instability of image-making\, existing in tension with the geometric structure of the square. \nJames’s work also resonates with the emotional architecture of Mark Rothko\, the modular rigor of Donald Judd\, the expanded geometries of Frank Stella\, and the radical formal propositions of Kazimir Malevich. Echoes of Sean Scully’s rhythmic bands and structural blocks can likewise be felt in James’s exploration of balance\, structure\, and emotional resonance\, as he pushes the square beyond a static form into something dynamic\, psychological\, and deeply contemporary. \nDrawing on the formal legacies of these art-historical figures\, James honors the past while extending its language into the present. His paintings carry the rhythm\, pressure\, and psychological intensity of contemporary urban life—particularly the pace and dissonance of London—while remaining firmly rooted in abstraction’s ongoing conversation into space\, structure\, and perception. Ultimately\, Dissecting the Square. Colours and Black by Alexander James asks what new possibilities might still emerge from painting’s most elemental form: the square.

SUMMARY:Zao Wou-Ki: Infinite Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:PhillipsX\, the selling exhibition platform operated by the global Private Sales team at Phillips\, is pleased to present Zao Wou-Ki: Infinite Dialogues from 6-29 March. This selling exhibition offers audiences a rare opportunity to encounter Zao’s oeuvre in dialogue with works by artists with whom he shared profound affinities\, including Hans Hartung\, Georges Mathieu\, Sam Francis\, Jean-Paul Riopelle\, and others. Featuring a remarkable selection of paintings\, works on paper\, sculptures\, and prints spanning more than seven decades of creation\, the exhibition highlights the dynamic exchanges between East and West in the postwar era. Coinciding with Phillips’ West Kowloon neighbor M+’s Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker\, it extends a unique moment for audiences to rediscover the artist’s legacy in depth. \nZao Wou-Ki’s remarkable career was profoundly shaped by his years in Paris from the late 1940s onward\, when he became immersed in a circle of artists whose ideas nurtured his reflections on painting and abstraction. In 1951\, only three years after his arrival in Paris\, Zao began exhibiting at the avant garde Galerie Pierre alongside leading abstract artists of the time\, including Maria Helena Vieira da Silva\, Georges Mathieu\, Jacques Germain\, and Jean Paul Riopelle—who would go on to become his lifelong friend. Friendships proved pivotal for his career: poet Henri Michaux introduced gallerist Pierre Loeb to Zao in the early 1950s\, while Pierre Soulages later connected him with influential New York dealer Sam Kootz\, who began representing Zao in 1957. These encounters formed a rich tapestry of artistic exchange\, underscoring the networks that propelled his career and the dialogues between East and West that lie at the heart of this exhibition. \nAt the center of the exhibition is Retour de pêche\, a 1953 work that marked a pivotal moment in Zao’s career as he shifted from still-life compositions toward abstraction. The present work depicts a sweeping oceanic vision where indigo light illuminates two-thirds of the canvas and vessels drift into the night. The sea is articulated through rare\, linear brushwork that layers rippling waves into rhythmic order\, recalling the Water Painting (Shui Tu) tradition of Song master Ma Yuan—whom Zao deeply admired—and lending the work a distinctive resonance within his early oeuvre. The piece occupies an especially important place in his artistic development\, and its distinguished provenance further enhances its significance\, having once belonged to New York collector Patti Birch\, an early and ardent champion of Zao’s art. \nAnother highlight is Les Attiseurs (The Guardian of The Flame)\, distinguished by its provenance as part of Myriam Prévot’s collection at Galerie de France\, where Zao later forged a landmark three decade collaboration. Les Attiseurs is one of the first truly abstract works in Zao’s oeuvre where figurative elements in his previous compositions dissolve into abstract signs inspired by ancient Chinese oracle bones inscription. \nPainted in 2005\, Le vert caresse l’orange – 11.06.2005 stands as a landmark work created shortly after Zao Wou-Ki’s election to the French Academy of Fine Arts and his major retrospective at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume. Its vibrant yellow and pink palette recalls the artist’s breakthrough style of the 1980s while evoking the spirit of the Impressionist masters. Most recently\, the painting was featured in The Way is Infinite: Centennial Retrospective of Zao Wou-Ki at the Art Museum of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in 2023\, the largest retrospective of the artist in China in over two decades. \nJean Paul Riopelle’s Vol de Chute stands out as a fresh to market masterpiece\, distinguished by its vibrant palette and exceptional impasto that exemplify the artist’s dynamic approach to abstraction. Exhibited extensively across major cities—including Montreal (1963)\, Toronto (1971)\, Vancouver (1973)\, and New York (2005)—the work carries a rich exhibition history that underscores its importance within Riopelle’s oeuvre. As a close friend of Zao Wou Ki\, Canadian Riopelle shared the cross cultural dialogues that shaped postwar abstraction\, making this canvas a compelling highlight of the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Cj Hendry: Juju Pop-Up
DESCRIPTION:Internationally celebrated artist Cj Hendry is bringing her world-renowned creativity off the canvas and into collectors’ hands with her first-ever collectible toy series: juju\, in partnership with Phillips. Renowned for her hyperrealist drawings and immersive installations\, Hendry now turns her imagination into the realm of collectible art toys—marking her third major project in Hong Kong and opening a playful new chapter in her artistic journey. \nNo one quite knows where juju came from — only that it appeared quietly\, padding softly into the world with a single flower draped over one eye\, as if seeing everything half in magic\, half in memory. Juju does not demand attention or glitter for the spotlight; instead\, it invites curiosity — a quiet presence that draws you in. Its floppy ears have heard more than they’ll ever share\, while its clear eye remains watchful and kind. Both mysterious and endearing\, juju is a friend\, a guardian\, a charm\, a gentle muse — made to be cherished\, collected\, or simply admired from afar. \nJuju will make her debut at Upper House Hong Kong with a spectacular Christmas installation: a towering tree composed of 200 oversized plush green juju toys\, to be unveiled on 17 November. The whimsical yet meaningful display will remain on view through 2 January 2026. Each plush juju adorning the tree will be available for ‘adoption\,’ with proceeds benefiting Mother’s Choice\, a local charity dedicated to supporting children without families and pregnant teenagers in Hong Kong. Far more than a toy\, every juju will be presented in a bespoke wooden collector’s box\, accompanied by an individually signed and numbered adoption card\, available for collection once the installation is dismantled in January. \nFollowing her debut at Upper House\, juju will be reimagined as a collectible bag charm\, introduced in 24 distinct iterations\, each produced in varying quantities and offered in blind boxes\, ensuring that every piece becomes a rare treasure within her whimsical universe. These charms will take center stage at an immersive pop-up exhibition at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District\, running from 29 November to 2 December and open to the public. At the heart of the exhibition is the juju Edition Sculpture\, a handcrafted vinyl work limited to eight editions of 100 worldwide\, each presented in a custom wooden box with a matching display stand. Surrounding this centerpiece\, the exhibition space will be transformed into a vibrant\, supermarket-inspired pink shelving\, vinyl walls\, plush foam flooring\, and an eight-foot-tall juju sculpture (price upon request) that brings Hendry’s bold vision to life. In addition to the collectible toy series\, her signature hyper-realistic large-scale drawing\, titled juju (price upon request)\, will also be on display. \nFans can also grab exclusive juju merchandise\, from plush ears and caps to T-shirts\, stickers\, pins\, umbrellas\, socks\, and leather flower trays—perfect for collectors and fans of Hendry’s playful\, pop-infused aesthetic. \nBuilding on her previous Hong Kong ventures—including the Complimentary Colors collaboration with Christian Louboutin at Art Basel Hong Kong and the exuberant Summer Pool Party at IFC Mall—Hendry’s return underscores her deep connection to the city. With a newly opened Hong Kong studio\, she continues to expand her creative footprint across Asia. \nExhibition Details:\n\nUpper House Hong Kong Christmas Tree\nLocation: Upper House\, 88 Queensway\, Admiralty\, Hong Kong\nDate: 17 November 2025 – 2 January 2026 \nJuju Pop-Up Exhibition (open to the public)\nLocation: Phillips Asia Headquarters\, G/F\, WKCDA Tower\, West Kowloon Cultural District\, No. 8 Austin Road West\, Kowloon\, Hong Kong\nDate: 10am to 6pm\, 29 November – 2 December 2025

SUMMARY:November Editions auction
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is delighted to present the highlights from its upcoming Editions auction\, scheduled to take place on 25 November in Hong Kong. This carefully curated sale brings together an exceptional selection of prints and multiples by some of the most influential modern and contemporary artists. Featured names include Yoshitomo Nara\, Yayoi Kusama\, Rashid Johnson\, Jeff Koons\, Park Seo-Bo\, Auguste Rodin\, and Pablo Picasso\, among others. Ahead of the auction\, a preview will be held at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in West Kowloon Cultural District from 15-25 November. In addition to the live sale\, Phillips will present Editions Online: No Reserve\, open for bidding from 17-24 November. With no reserve prices\, this online auction invites a broader audience to engage with the market and acquire works by leading artists at accessible entry points. \nGiven the strong demand and record-breaking prices that works by Yoshitomo Nara and Yayoi Kusama continue to achieve on the secondary market\, prints and editions offer a more accessible entry point for collectors and enthusiasts seeking works by these blue-chip artists. As interest in contemporary Japanese art continues to grow globally\, acquiring prints by Kusama and Nara presents a compelling opportunity to engage with their creative legacy at a more attainable price point. \nAmong the highlights of the Editions Hong Kong sale is Yoshitomo Nara’s Backwards Forwards\, a compelling work that encapsulates the artist’s signature aesthetic and narrative style. Known for his deceptively simple yet emotionally charged imagery\, Nara uses his iconic childlike figures to explore themes of innocence\, defiance\, and introspection. In Backwards Forwards\, a seemingly sweet yet subtly rebellious child is paired with text elements that offer a quiet but poignant critique of the adult world\, inviting viewers to reflect on societal norms and emotional vulnerability. Also featured in this season’s auction is My Little Treasure\, another quintessential Nara print that showcases his melancholic protagonists—children whose expressions convey a curious blend of tenderness\, solitude\, and emotional complexity. Nara’s practice also pays homage to traditional Japanese art forms\, particularly the ukiyo-e genre. By incorporating the classic woodblock printing techniques dating back to the 17th century\, he infuses his contemporary aesthetic with historical depth. \nYayoi Kusama’s iconic pumpkin motif continues to captivate collectors worldwide\, and its popularity is especially evident in the prints market. This season’s Editions sale in Hong Kong features two striking pumpkin-themed prints that exemplify Kusama’s bold visual language and her enduring fascination with repetition\, form\, and psychological symbolism. These works offer collectors an accessible way to engage with one of contemporary art’s most celebrated figures\, whose pumpkins have become synonymous with her unique artistic identity. \nAlso featured in the auction is Rashid Johnson’s Untitled (Large Anxious Red)\, a powerful work from the series the artist began in response to the global pandemic in 2020. Building on his long-established Anxious Men series\, Johnson reimagines his visual language by replacing his signature black wax with a striking blood-red medium—marking a dramatic shift that reflects the urgency and emotional intensity of a world in crisis. Equally iconic is Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog\, one of the most recognizable artworks of the 21st century. These sculptures have come to symbolize the transformation of contemporary art into a celebration of everyday objects. Departing from Koons’ earlier provocative themes\, Balloon Dog centers on a subject often overlooked in today’s fast-paced world: joy. \nNotable modern works include Park Seo-Bo’s Ecriture 9-8 from his best-known series\, which has transitioned from neutral hues to tactile and colourful canvases over the years. Between 1959 and 1962\, Pablo Picasso created around 40 works inspired by Édouard Manet’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe\, exploring the theme across various mediums. This series reflects Picasso’s lifelong dialogue with art history—reinterpreting masterpieces through his revolutionary styles\, from academic realism to Cubism. During the late 1950s and early 1960s\, he revisited the works of the Old Masters who most influenced him\, producing cycles that merged homage with innovation. Auguste Rodin’s Torse féminin assis sans tête\, petit modèle exemplifies the sculptor’s enduring fascination with the expressive power of the human form. This intimate\, headless seated female torso captures Rodin’s mastery in rendering movement\, emotion\, and sensuality through fragmented anatomy.

SUMMARY:Liu Dan: Morphogenesis
DESCRIPTION:To mark its 10th anniversary in Asia\, Phillips will present a series of specially curated programmes. As one of the highlights of the celebration\, PhillipsX\, a selling exhibition platform operated by the global Private Sales team at Phillips\, is delighted to present Liu Dan: Morphogenesis\, taking place from 22 April to 12 May at Phillips’ galleries in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. \nLiu Dan is a prominent figure in contemporary Chinese ink art\, and the selling exhibition features 26 important works\, marking his most extensive solo presentation to date. The show spans themes such as dictionaries\, flowers\, rocks\, and his iconic ‘Grand Landscape’ series from recent years. It systematically traces his artistic journey over four decades\, revealing how ink art transcends the boundaries between Eastern and Western aesthetics to construct a contemporary spiritual vision that defies time and space. Select works on display will be available for purchase through Phillips’ private sales. \nThis exhibition showcases a series of the latest creations by the artist\, including the monumental Primal Vibrancy\, which measures 527 centimetres wide. This groundbreaking work redefines the contemporary possibilities of Shan Shui (landscape) as a vessel for Eastern spirituality through scientific inquiry and cross-cultural perspectives. The painting’s exquisitely elegant composition transcends mere representation of rock formations\, transforming physical forms into ineffable visions that establish a new order beyond materiality\, free from narrative constraints. Another leading highlight\, Sunflower\, employs traditional Chinese ink-on-paper techniques with a drawing-like approach to depict a floral subject. The magnified sunflower pulses with silent yet monumental vitality on Xuan paper\, where the rhythmic breath of Eastern ink brushwork seamlessly merges with contemporary visual syntax. Also created in 2025\, Rock from Studio “Xiao Gu Shan” I depicts a scholar’s stone with the artist’s signature meticulous brushwork. Viewed from afar\, the composition evokes the grandeur of towering peaks and undulating mountain ranges. The upper section of the painting features ‘Record of Artificial Mountains\,’ a text by the late Ming-early Qing dynasty monk Dokushō Shōeki (独立性易)\, exemplifying ‘painting with words’ while elevating garden aesthetics to a cosmological dimension.

SUMMARY:New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art & Design
DESCRIPTION:As Phillips celebrates its 10th anniversary in Asia this year\, the company is thrilled to present a series of auctions\, previews\, and selling exhibitions this March at its Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s vibrant West Kowloon Cultural District and its Phillips Perpetual boutique in the Pedder Building\, Central. These events coincide with the city’s highly anticipated Art Week. \nTaking place on 29 March\, New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art and Design auction in Hong Kong presents a selection of works by sought-after artists alongside emerging names into dialogue with some of the very best Design works by the 20th and 21st Century masters. Phillips’ ‘New Now’ sales have long been a guidepost for collectors seeking rising stars on the brink of international acclaim. Staying true to this spirit\, this season\, Phillips is honoured to be the auction partner for The 2025 Sovereign Asian Art Prize\, featuring works from more than 30 shortlisted artists across Asia in the sale. Funds raised through artwork sales will benefit The Sovereign Art Foundation’s Make It Better programme\, supporting disadvantaged children in Hong Kong. \nHighlights of the sale include Ayako Rokkaku’s triptych work\, a dreamlike painting that features her iconic motif of adolescent girls. Each panel bursts with vivid hues and playful energy\, showcasing the artist’s unique painting technique with her hands. \nProfessional Help on Rye rhymes with British artist and musician Issy Wood’s recent effort to distill food as a symbol and problem of desire from her routine activities. The motif of food signifies a dangerous fetishist impulse and speaks to a more intimate experience within our biological mechanics. Another standout is Volcano Blossoms by Dawn Ng\, a multi-disciplinary visual artist from Singapore who has worked across a breadth of mediums\, motifs\, and scales. The work is shortlisted for the 2025 Sovereign Asian Art Prize.

SUMMARY:Phillips Editions\, Photographs\, and Design
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to announce highlights from the Editions\, Photographs\, and Design Auction in Hong Kong on 12 December. Featuring nearly 120 lots\, the sale brings a diverse selection of Editions from blue-chip artists and rising stars\, including Yoshitomo Nara\, Yayoi Kusama\, David Hockney\, Zao Wou-ki\, Mehdi Ghadyanloo\, and Ewa Juszkiewicz; important works by 20th and 21st century photographers\, such as Steven Klein\, Flip Schulke and Eiji Ohashi; and an array of Japanese and Scandinavian Design. Prior to the auction\, the preview will be held at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District from 3 to 12 December. \nHIGHLIGHTS FROM EDITIONS\nOne of the top lots in the Editions section is Yoshitomo Nara’s sculpture\, Mori Girl. Executed in his characteristic kawaii style\, Nara’s most pervasive motif\, a little girl poses as a tall forest tree. With Mori Girl’s large\, cartoon-like eyes and her reserved\, endearing smile\, Nara departs from the usual humorous and satirical style in his previous works\, returning to a more pure and peaceful state of mind. Also highlighting the sale is Yayoi Kusama’s A Pumpkin (YOR-A) (K. 326)\, which brings together the artist’s most recognisable motifs. Kusama is one of the most coveted artists in the world\, and for collectors looking to shape their body of work\, an editioned Kusama work has become a popular way to begin. Besides a series of paintings in portraits of his friends and family\, Tiananmen is an exceptional subject matter throughout Zhang Xiaogang’s artistic career\, such as Tian’anmen Series (7 works) featured in this season’s auction. With the establishment of the new China era\, to Zhang\, Tiananmen Square is the portrait of the Chinese people. \nPhillips is pleased to present works hailing from three prominent collections in the Editions section this season\, including lithographs and etchings by Zao Wou-Ki\, from the collection of the artist’s daughter\, Sin-May Roy Zao. Further highlights are a group of Yoshitomo Nara’s iconic etchings published by the Japanese KIDO Press Gallery\, and a selection of Western works from a private Asian collection\, including three works by David Hockney highlighted by the screenprint Above and Beyond\, from Some More New Prints (G. 1625\, M.C.A.T. 339). \nHIGHLIGHTS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS\nA diverse and exciting selection of photographs showcases the full expressiveness of the medium. Following its Asian debut of ULTIMATE STEVEN KLEIN in June\, Phillips is pleased to present Steven Klein’s Kate Moss Study #7\, which illustrates his distinctive approach to fashion photography as a means of storytelling. Eiji Ohashi’s serene and evocative Roadside Lights #145 captures one of Japan’s ubiquitous vending machines in Hokkaidō after a record snowfall\, presenting a meditation on nature and commercialism. \nFlip Schulke’s Ali Underwater captures the strong ambition of young up-and-coming boxer Cassius Clay (later Muhammed Ali). Knowing Schulke’s success with water sports photography\, Clay invited him to shoot while he trained in a pool\, claiming that punching underwater was as effective as training with weights. Schulke captured a series of photographs of the boxer flexing\, punching\, and training in a hotel swimming pool. It was only later that Schulke found out that Clay did not typically train in a swimming pool and\, in fact\, did not know how to swim. Nonetheless\, Schulke’s photograph has become one of the most definitive images of the legendary fighter. \nHIGHLIGHTS FROM DESIGN\nThe Design section will feature pieces by Japanese and Scandinavian designers\, led by Shiro Kuramata’s Early ‘How High the Moon’ two-seater sofa. Widely admired for his ability to free designs from gravity and use materials in ways that defied convention\, Kuramata creates objects that stretch structural boundaries and are also visually captivating. The present lot represents themes central to Kuramata’s oeuvre in both its use of industrial material as medium to blur the boundaries between art and design\, and the artist’s characteristic imbuement of cerebral musings into his designs: in this case\, the endeavour to minimise gravity while simultaneously occupying expansive volume through the use of planes of porous mesh welded to construct the sofa’s visually massive form. \nA pioneer of Danish modern design\, Hans J. Wegner is celebrated for his iconic creations that seamlessly blend craftsmanship and artistic innovation. He designed this now-iconic ‘China’ chair after seeing an illustration of an antique round-back Chinese chair in a book about chair typologies throughout history. He simplified the form into its most clear and logical design while also utilising the best materials and superb craftsmanship\, making it a classic example of Danish Modern design.

SUMMARY:New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to present highlights from the upcoming New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art auction in Hong Kong. Taking place on 4 October\, the sale will juxtapose renowned artists such as Yoshitomo Nara\, Takashi Murakami\, Ayako Rokkaku\, Issy Wood\, Miriam Cahn\, Zhao Zhao\, Edgar Plans alongside more emerging names\, including Kenichi Hoshine and Nguyen Quoc Dung. Prior to the auction\, the exhibition at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District will be open to the public from 24 September to 4 October. \nLeading the sale is Takashi Murakami’s fresh-to-market work Flower of Hope \, which exemplifies the artist’s ability to bridge the worlds of high art and popular culture. In this work\, Murakami continues his exploration of the kawaii aesthetic\, a concept deeply rooted in Japanese culture that signifies cuteness and innocence. The flowers’ wide\, gleaming smiles and twinkling eyes epitomise pure happiness\, inviting viewers into a vibrant\, joyful world. The composition of the present work is symmetrical and dynamic\, while the reflective surface of the platinum leaf background adds a shimmering quality\, making the flowers appear to float and dance as the viewer moves around the work. This interactive element demands engagement\, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the work and experience the full scope of its visual and emotional impact. \nAnother highlight of the sale is Ayako Rokkaku’s Untitled (Wooden House)\, a unique hand-painted wooden installation created live in 2019 during her exhibition at Museum Jan in Amstelveen\, Netherlands. This piece showcases the artist’s signature whimsical style in a captivating\, three-dimensional form. It invites viewers to step into Rokkaku’s dream-like world\, enveloping them in the process whilst blurring the boundaries between an art object and an interactive children’s playground. Entirely covered in her iconic swirling\, finger-painted patterns\, the present work not only transforms a simple wooden structure into her fairytale world\, but also represents a significant evolution in the artist’s oeuvre in its interactive\, immersive qualities. Through her unique approach\, Rokkaku bridges the gap between art and imagination\, leaving a lasting impression of joy and curiosity. \nLondon-based American artist Issy Wood has proactively wielded an oeuvre that interweaves painting\, music\, and writing to explore the theme of desire. Often described as a ‘medieval millennial’\, Wood has combined a touch of classical solemnity with an attitude of contemporary cynicism\, through which she develops a highly stylised mannerism of the uncanny to approach the complex floods of desire hidden in everyday banality. This season’s New Now offers two works by Wood\, Unsprung and Mozzarella / the confidante\, both probe into a specific form of possession and thus violence expressed through human domestication of animals. \nCui Jie stands out as a beacon of innovation in the contemporary Chinese art scene\, particularly through her intricate explorations of urban architecture. Her distinctive painting style combines architectural accuracy with an almost fiction-like futuristic impression\, creating layered narratives that reflect and interrogate the transformative landscapes of modern Chinese cities. An outstanding example of her skyscraper studies\, China Telecom Building 3 offered in the sale works from a real building\, closely observed\, only to break it down with incredible formal and artistic ingenuity. At its centre is the Pudong International Information Port\, from Cui’s native Shanghai\, in which the details are impeccably reproduced\, but its side is given an impossible silver gleam\, so intense it resembles the retro utopian fantasies of the Space Age. The work is produced by her stenciled black spray paint\, which outside leaves a matrix-like grid pattern.

SUMMARY:A TRIBUTE TO TRADITION: Another clue about Huang Yuxing
DESCRIPTION:PhillipsX\, a selling exhibition platform operated by the global Private Sales team at Phillips\, is pleased to announce A TRIBUTE TO TRADITION: Another clue about Huang Yuxing\, a brand new project by the acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist. Taking place from 11 September to 4 October at Phillips’ galleries in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District\, the exhibition showcases Huang Yuxing’s tribute to Chinese tradition. \nIt goes beyond contemporary art\, emphasizing the curatorial approach. The artworks chosen for A TRIBUTE TO TRADITION not only cover the artist’s iconic oil paintings\, which have been setting records in the auction market but also present a series of unseen creative attempts by him. They include Chinese ink paintings drawn by Huang Yuxing during his teenage years\, landscape paintings that offer a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese shan shui works\, and a collection of pieces such as a purple clay teapot sculpture\, lacquerware\, ceramics\, as well as hand-carved stamps that showcase his passion for ancient craftsmanship. These exemplify his love for traditional Chinese landscape painting and embody his enthusiasm for the ancient and ever-evolving craftsmanship passed down through generations of Chinese people. \nAmong the exhibition highlights is Seven Treasure Pines Teapot\, which presents a fierce collision between traditional techniques such as purple clay and lacquer\, and Huang Yuxing’s contemporary landscape art\, paying homage to tradition. For the first time\, Huang collaborated with the purple clay master Mr. Wang Qiang\, combining his signature palette of fluorescent colours with two intangible cultural heritages: purple clay art and lacquer. The overall shape is round at the top and square at the bottom\, echoing “the dome-like heaven embraces the vast earth.” The image displayed on the teapot is inspired by the artist’s monumental Seven Treasure Pines\, a seven-panel painting executed in 2016-2019\, which presents viewers with a radiant cosmos with a fantastical tableau resplendent in luminous jewel stone. \nSeven Treasure Pines captures and embodies Huang’s deep fascination for Tibetan Buddhism. From left to right\, each panel represents one of the Treasures of Buddhism: coral\, agate\, pearl\, gold\, silver\, tridacna stone\, and azurite\, exploring the immensity of the universe. The teapot sculpture is octagonal to showcase the integrity of the painting\, and it symbolizes eight planets in the solar system by being divided into eight parts. The octagonal body of the teapot serves as a window frame of the view\, which appears to be an outdoor scenery or an installation. The lid knob and lid are composed to represent “the sun” and “the moon\,” resembling the rise and fall of the sun and the moon\, echoing the concept of heaven and earth\, expressing the vibrant circle of life. The teapot handle is made using the lug technique\, enhancing its upward feel. It is embellished with mother-of-pearl inlay\, creating a shimmering effect against the lacquer background reminiscent of stars in the night sky. Lacquer is a natural resin extracted from lacquer trees with a long history in Chinese culture as intangible cultural heritage. Crafting exquisite lacquerware involves numerous complex processes; replicating Huang Yuxing’s Seven Treasure Pines requires hundreds of layers of colouring techniques. The purple clay used to make the sculpture is the dark reddish-purple clay\, known as Dicaoqing\, which comes from Ding Shu Township in Yixing\, Jiangsu Province. \nA Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains is a work by the Northern Song dynasty court painter Wang Ximeng\, now housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The artwork depicts the beautiful mountains and rivers of the Northern Song dynasty and is regarded as a masterpiece in traditional Chinese landscape painting. Highlighted in the exhibition is Composition: A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains 1-6 which presents Huang Yuxing’s reinterpretation of A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains. He deconstructed the long scroll into six sections\, removed the colours typically found in traditional landscape paintings\, and presented his magnificent vision of mountains and rivers through pure composition. The six segments display completely different wide-ranging landscapes. At the same time\, the use of simple black-and-white tones echoes the traditional Chinese painting concept of “ink divided into five categories\,” reconstructing the artistic conception of rivers and mountains through a visual experience based on black\, white\, and gray. \nFor this project in Hong Kong\, Huang Yuxing created Endless miles of mountains and streams with a total of 66 editions. The composition of the work is based on his painting Nine Dragons. The imagery corresponds to the Northern Song Dynasty artist Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountains and Streams currently held in the Palace Museum in Taipei. The work adopts the typical panoramic composition of Northern Song landscape painting. Distant mountain peaks stand tall against the sky. In the middle\, a prominent pine tree appears as a personified or anthropomorphized element in the artist’s brushwork\, making the landscape painting livelier and fuller of charm. Like Travelers Among Mountains and Streams\, Endless miles of mountains and streams follows the classic 2:1 aspect ratio\, and it is mounted as a vertical hanging scroll. \nIn addition to a series of exquisite works that express Huang Yuxing’s passion for traditional Chinese landscape and craftsmanship\, this exhibition also offers a work from the artist’s well-known Bubble series. This series of works joyfully depicts Huang Yuxing’s profound reflections on the experiences of time and space through visual metaphors of organic life forms. The Bubble series is an unapologetic celebration of Huang Yuxing’s deep reflection on the human experience in time and space. Huang’s artistic practice entails a long-running investigation into the individual’s life experience in parallel to the natural world. Stemming from reoccurring motifs of rivers and swirls in the artist’s oeuvre\, the Bubble series discusses the topic of dissolution\, demonstrating a sense of eternity that underlies the ephemeral existence of bubbles themselves. The human experience is visually represented as bubbles caught in various states of motion\, as fleeting and volatile as the temporary existence of an individual’s life. Huang’s signature approach during this period was to superimpose geometric forms delineated in thinly veiled neon colours to create delicate depth and texture\, which is well-demonstrated in Bubbles.

SUMMARY:Editions\, Photographs\, and Design - Phillips Hong Kong Auction
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to introduce a new cross-category auction\, Editions\, Photographs\, and Design\, which will take place live in Hong Kong on 14 June. The inaugural sale will feature over 100 lots\, ranging from an extensive selection of Editions by sought-after artists alongside emerging names; stand-out works by some of the world’s most celebrated visual artists and photographers\, including the Asia auction debut of Steven Klein’s unique Polaroid works; and a diverse array of Design works spanning the 20th and 21st Centuries\, including works from notable makers such as Thomas Heatherwick\, Sofu Teshigahara\, Studio Drift\, among others. \n\n\n\n\nHIGHLIGHTS FROM EDITIONS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeading the Editions section is Keith Haring’s Dog (L. pp. 48-49) from 1986- 87\, featuring his celebrated barking dog motif which originated in the artist’s New York subway drawings of the early 1980s. Another standout highlight by Pop Art pioneers is Andy Warhol’s iconic Shoes (F. & S. II.257)\, from 1980 with diamond dust\, which epitomizes his fascination with glamour and celebrity. Also on offer is Damien Hirst’s complete set of The Virtues (H9)\, which is inspired by Bushidō\, the Japanese samurai code of ethics. \nFurther sale highlights include Yoshitomo Nara’s Walk On (M. & S. E-2010- 012)\, a Ukiyo-e woodcut which depicts Nara’s iconic little girl with almond shaped eyes and a menacing smile set in a hard straight line. Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin (White Y) (K. 150) brings together three of Kusama’s most recognisable motifs: a pumpkin\, dots\, and infinity nets. Additional works on offer include Jonas Wood’s Fish Pot; Matisse Pot 4; and Snoopy Pot. Wood’s incorporation of ceramic vessels into his body of work stems from his collaborative working relationship with his wife\, the ceramic artist Shio Kusaka. \n\n\n\n\nHIGHLIGHTS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhillips is pleased to present ULTIMATE STEVEN KLEIN for the Photographs section. Steven Klein is one of the most innovative and provocative artists in photography and film. A highly sought-after figure\, he has landed coveted covers of magazines such as Vogue and W with his riveting body of work being featured globally and has shot high- profile advertising campaigns for the likes of Alexander McQueen\, Tom Ford and Dior. This exclusive curation of 18 unique Polaroids from the celebrated photographer’s archive was personally chosen by Steven Klein and marks the first time his works are being offered in Asia. Showcasing Klein’s distinctive approach to photography as a means of storytelling\, this exceptional grouping offers a window into the intimate relationship between photographer and subject. Taken between 1999 and 2015\, the Polaroids feature striking portraits of icons in fashion\, music\, and film\, including Angelina Jolie\, Brad Pitt\, Britney Spears\, David Bowie\, Madonna\, Kate Moss\, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer\, among others. \n\n\n\n\nOther notable highlights include Francis Giacobetti’s 1988 Zebra #17\, which demonstrates the artist’s unorthodox approach to technique\, light and shadow and expresses the full beauty of the human body. Moreover\, a print from Tim Parchikov’s Burning News\, shows a person clutching a burning newspaper in the snow\, which explores how humans react when the flow of information reaches a critical point. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHIGHLIGHTS FROM DESIGN \n\n\n\n\nThe Design section will showcase a diverse range of works spanning the 20th and 21st Centuries\, led by Sofu Teshigahara’s Six-panel folding screen. With forms and lines inspired by the dynamism of nature\, the present work immediately strikes for its calligraphic\, gestural and sculptural brushstrokes\, reminiscent of traditional Chinese landscape as well as calligraphy. Further highlights include a seating structure made from a single piece of aluminium titled “Extrusion” bench by the multi-award-winning British architect Thomas Heatherwick\, who designed Hong Kong’s Pacific Place; Studio Drift’s ‘Fragile Future 3.12’ explores the unexpected connection between nature and technology\, and Alvar Aalto’s Early “Paimio” armchair\, model no 41\, whose work brought a refreshing breath of humanism to modern design.

SUMMARY:New Now
DESCRIPTION:After a successful launch last November\, Phillips is pleased to stage its second New Now auction in Hong Kong\, featuring an eclectic mix of works from exciting young and blue-chip contemporary artists alike\, including Takashi Murakami\, Chiharu Shiota\, Mr.\, KAWS\, MADSAKI\, teamLab\, Guy Yanai\, Gongkan\, Oh de Laval\, Kasing Lung\, among others. The sale will take place on 29 March at 2pm HKT. Prior to the auction\, the exhibition at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District will be open to the public from 20-29 March\, coinciding with the city’s highly anticipated Art Week. \nWidely regarded as one of the most important and forward-thinking artists of our time\, KAWS is celebrated for his multidisciplinary practice that straddles the line between fine art and street art. The present work\, CHUM (KCO15) is instantly recognisable as a major work by the artist. Painted in smooth planes of cerulean blue\, the figure bordered in an electrifying shade of ultramarine\, which when viewed in the flesh\, recalls the visual impact of Yves Klein’s ingenious and mesmerising invention of International Klein Blue. Regarded as KAWS’ trademark cartoon character\, ‘Chum’ has become synonymous with the artist and his exploration of contemporary pop culture. Works that include this subject matter have demonstrated to be highly coveted by international art collectors. \nComing in the form of a software programme\, teamLab’s Universe of Water Particles – Gold is a 5-channel artwork depicting a virtual\, moving waterfall in an immersive scale that towers over 3 meters long. Created through the art collective’s concept of ‘ultrasubjective’ space\, a term that refers to a distinct form of spatial depiction prevalent in pre-modern East Asian paintings; in such pieces\, oceans\, rivers and other bodies of water were expressed as a series of curvilinear lines to convey movement and simulate life. Through the use of simple lines and the colour gold\, the present work echoes the use of gold foil and flat perspectives seen on Japanese folding screens. This March\, the teamLab: Continuous exhibition which displays different luminous autonomous ovoids will be launched in Hong Kong. After having achieved the world auction record for teamLab in 2021\, Phillips is delighted to offer this work coinciding with the large-scale outdoor art project in the city by the collective. \nDense with rich elements\, colour\, and character Untitled is emblematic of Mr.’s body of work\, which delves deep into the otaku subculture and the Japanese aesthetic of kawaii. Each canvas becomes a microcosm of Tokyo’s dynamic atmosphere\, where the vibrancy of youth intertwines with the fervor of popular culture. Central to Untitled‘s composition is a character with striking blue hair\, whose large\, glistening eyes and childlike features capture the quintessential kawaii style in Mr.’s practice. A kaleidoscope of smaller characters and motifs surround the centre\, each meticulously rendered\, offering a narrative on the bustling nature of otaku culture. The characters\, diverse in expression and activity\, are interspersed with English and Japanese text\, creating a collage that is both textual and visual. This blend of characters from various narratives could be a representation of the crowded nature of Japanese urban life\, or the cluttered space of an otaku’s sanctuary\, filled with merchandise and memories. \nIn developing an unorthodox style that combines mass culture with art history\, Japanese visual artist MADSAKI boldly reexamines the long-standing conventions that continue to define fine art. A part of his iconic Wannabe series\, where MADSAKI reinterpreted classical and contemporary masterpieces throughout art history\, the present work\, Le Reve 2\, pays homage to Pablo Picasso and his 1932 painting Le Rêve. While MADSAKI’s rendition of the iconic work appears to closely follow the composition\, colours and form of the original work\, the strokes and splatters of MADSAKI’s signature spray paint aesthetic bring upon a sense of motion and rawness to the static portrait. In lieu of Picasso’s serene rendering of his muse’s facial features\, MADSAKI replaces them with hollowed eyes and pasted-on smiles\, transforming the figure into a striking reformulation derived from his distinct visual lexicon. \nAn Italian Modernist\, Salvo’s practice originally consisted of conceptual photography and sculpture. He would later be associated with the 1960s Arte Povera movement—notably sharing a studio with Alighiero Boetti—before turning to painting in 1973. He would ultimately come to be known for the brightly colored landscapes he commended in the early 1980s\, inspired by the likes of Giorgio de Chirico\, and which would define the latter half of his oeuvre. Painted in 2019\, the present work was created in Salvo’s twilight years\, just a few years before his passing in 2015. \nAgosto\, like many of his other works named after seasons\, months and times of day\, captures the ephemeral nature of time and memory. The interplay of light and shadow exemplified in Agosto is not just a depiction of a specific time of day\, but a broader meditation on time itself. The painting’s highly stylized trees and houses are rich in colour and depth\, with warm hues dominating the overall composition\, evoking the languid heat of an Italian summer.

SUMMARY:Phillips New Now & Design
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to announce highlights from the inaugural New Now & Design auction in Hong Kong. Taking place at 2 pm HKT on 26 November at Phillips’ Asia headquarters\, the sale will offer over 100 lots\, combining works from sought-after artists alongside emerging names. The sale will introduce a few debut artists to the secondary market in Asia\, including Kelly Beeman and Gao Hang. Their works will be featured alongside other in demand names at auction\, such as Mr.\, Mehdi Ghadyanloo and Yuan Fang. Also on offer is a selection of exceptional examples of 20th & 21st Century European Design include works by Hervé van der Straeten\, Hans Wegner\, Ole Wanscher and Franco Albini\, among others. The digital auction catalogue will be available online starting 15th November\, and on view to the public from 18th – 26th November at Phillips Hong Kong galleries in the WKCDA Tower in West Kowloon Cultural District. \nComing to auction for the first time\, First Time Ever is a unique and early example by the multidisciplinary Japanese artist\, Mr.\, painted in 2007. As one of the most representative artists of his time\, Mr.’s earlier works such as First Time Ever focuses on detailed depictions of landscapes and cityscapes\, showcasing a painterly aesthetic that is now rare to see. The work features an adolescent girl standing by a riverbank at sunset\, accompanied by a creature atop her head\, embarking on an unknown adventure. Lush vegetation\, distant high-rise buildings\, and reflective waters are rendered in intricate details\, culminating into a vivid snapshot of a riverbank landscape that recalls well known landmarks such as the Kamo River in Kyoto. \nAnother highlight of the sale is Lost in Thought 50 by Japanese contemporary artist Yuichi Hirako\, one of the most impressive paintings hailing from his Lost in Thought series to appear at auction. Depicted in the foreground of the present work are Hirako’s signature character\, the ‘Tree Man’. Existing as half human and half tree\, the figure lazes leisurely with his black cat\, blending harmoniously into the rich forest that surrounds him. Rendered in bold saturated hues of acrylic paint\, Lost in Thought 50 encourages deep introspection\, and invites viewers to reconsider their own relationships with nature and the organisms that surround around us. \nVisually striking and unapologetically bold\, the works of Chinese artist Yuan Fang are highly sought-after. Her works can be understood as the physical representations of memories\, emotions\, and vulnerability. Known for her dynamic abstractions\, her gestural style explores complex human experiences by transforming such concepts into fluid brushstrokes on canvas\, recalling the works of abstract expressionist painter Lee Krasner\, whom Fang has expressed as one of her influences. In particular\, the two share an interest in exploring the interplay between form and colour. Also fresh to auction\, the present work unfolds with indomitable force\, allowing chaos and unpredictability to permeate with each stroke as it surfaces and coalesces. \nBest known for his surrealistically still yet contemplative works\, The Eternal Gate is a superlative example of Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo’s creative output\, where the artist transforms a three-dimensional structure onto a two-dimensional canvas\, creating a surreal plane that plays with the viewer’s perspectives. Taking inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical paintings\, Ghadyanloo’s style is characterised by his masterful ability in capturing the contrast between lightness and darkness through his implementation of the chiaroscuro technique. Devoid of figures in most of his works\, the artist typically renders his utopian compositions with the simple structure of four walls\, and injects everyday objects from his daily encounters as his main focal point. The present work was also featured in Ghadyanloo’s solo exhibition Portals of Light at Galleri Golsa in Oslo in 2019. \nIn addition\, the sale features a strong selection of 20th and 21st Century design from designers and manufacturers who stylistically defined the international design landscape. Among them is ‘Miroir Pelote’\, model no. 360 by French designer Hervé van der Straeten. First known for his jewellery designs\, Hervé van der Straeten now enjoys international recognition for his strikingly stylish furniture\, mirrors\, and lighting creations\, that are instantly recognizable\, from the way that contrasting materials\, bold variations of forms and elegant lines are combined with perfect proportions.

SUMMARY:Phillips 20th Century & Contemporary Art Hong Kong Fall
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to announce Yoshitomo Nara’s outstanding No Means No as one of the star lots in the upcoming Hong Kong Evening Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art\, taking place on 7 October from the auction house’s new state-of-the-art gallery and auction space at Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. To be offered for the first time at auction\, No Means No was created in 2006 at the height of Nara’s artistic prowess. His other stylistically and thematically linked works painted in the same year are part of institutional collections\, including the Museum of Contemporary Art\, San Diego and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Tokyo. \nAlso among the Evening Sale’s highlights is Nicolas Party’s Still Life with an Olive. Shown at Party’s first major solo exhibition in the United Kingdom at the Modern Institute in Glasgow in 2013\, the present work is one of only seven still life oil paintings made specially for this show\, with each being created over a course of 10 to 20 months\, during which Party spends the time working and re-working his paintings\, a key element that is central to the iconography of painting as a medium. Featuring a vibrant palette of yellow\, red\, green\, and blue within a harmonious composition\, it exemplifies the artist’s dexterity in colour application as well as painterly precision. Familiar fruits and objects are transformed into larger-than-life\, biomorphic shapes\, demonstrating Party’s playfulness with scale.

SUMMARY:(Re)Trace Kusama to Shiota
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to present (Re)Trace Kusama to Shiota\, an exhibition featuring works by two Japanese contemporary art stars Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota. The exhibition includes a non-selling group of artworks by Chiharu Shiota\, the largest collection of the artist ever presented to the public in Hong Kong. This group of non-selling pieces has been generously provided to be loan by Mr. Jay Pang of ARTICKS. And showcased alongside this group of museum grade works will be a series of iconic creations by the two female artists that are available for purchase through Phillips’ Private Sales. \nWhile Kusama and Shiota have had considerable exposure and solo exhibitions across a number of major cities in the world\, their works have never been brought together on such a scale and juxtaposed thematically. This show follows the success of Yayoi Kusama’s recent retrospective at M+\, Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now\, and it will open to the public from 18-30 April at Phillips’ new Asia headquarters in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. \nAmong the exhibition highlights is Chiharu Shiota’s State of Being (Dress)\, an immersive\, all-encompassing piece in a powerful red colour reminiscent of organic forms and blood vessels. Shiota incorporates found everyday objects such as clothing\, shoes or dolls\, with her use of red threads visualising human connections and relationships. The work measures 260 x 180 x 85 cm\, and is the first large dress installation ever exhibited to the public in Hong Kong. \nAlso highlighting the exhibition is Yayoi Kusama’s Six Guests\, executed in 1986\, when the artist’s sculptures contained poetic and personal undertones. Here the artist’s signature phallic shapes still blanket the objects\, but do not pose a menace. Surrounded by bowls\, a jug\, flowers and a pineapple\, Kusama’s creations are brought into the safe\, kitsch-infused realm of quotidian femininity and family life. With Six Guests Kusama defiantly seizes control of her discourse\, and the phallus is no longer an object of fear that dominates the narrative of the work\, but is instead wholly contained and controlled by the feminine.

SUMMARY:Phillips Hong Kong Spring Sales of 20th Century & Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Phillips is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition and sale dates for the company’s spectacular new headquarters in the WKCDA Tower in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. The new Asia headquarters\, which spans over 52\,000 square feet across a total of six floors\, will open for business in phases beginning on 18 March of this year. The state-of-the-art galleries and saleroom on the ground floor and first floor will open with the exhibition of 20th Century & Contemporary Art\, Watches and Jewellery from 18 March to 5 April\, leading up to auctions spanning from March to May. The company has also announced the Hong Kong auction calendar for Spring 2023\, along with early highlights from the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Sales\, and key highlights from Watches and Jewellery online sales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmong the auction highlights from the 20th Century & Contemporary Art Hong Kong Spring Sales to be debuted at the new location on 30-31 March is Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin. One of the highest value works by the artist to ever be offered at auction\, proceeds from its sale will benefit the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum in Clarinda\, Iowa\, United States. Donated by esteemed collectors Karen & Robert Duncan\, who owned the painting for 23 years\, the sale of this important work by the artist will further the Museum’s critical mission of promoting the Arts to a global community of enthusiasts\, while also supporting local Arts and Youth programs. Phillips is delighted to offer this fresh-to-market work by Kusama after having achieved the world auction record for the artist most recently in May 2022 in New York. Currently on view at M+\, Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now is the largest retrospective of the artist’s work ever held in Asia outside Japan\, and the work featured in the inaugural Evening Sale will be presented in Phillips’ new space flanking M+. Pumpkin brings together the three most iconic symbols in Kusama’s oeuvre – the pumpkin\, polka dots\, and the infinity net. Symmetrical\, full\, and round\, the present work is brilliantly luminous\, and a prime example of the artist’s most coveted motifs. Set against an expansive background of net-like patterns that directly evoke her Infinity Net series\, the vivid yellow pumpkin is covered with polka dots of alternating sizes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnother exquisite example of Kusama’s central artistic motif offered in the inaugural Evening Sale on 30 March is Infinity Dots (HTI)\, a rare and magnificent triptych work measuring 194 x 390cm. Coming to auction for the first time\, the present work was exhibited at Yayoi Kusama: Dots Obsession at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney in 2005. Closely related to the artist’s Infinity Net series in its intricate\, repetitive accumulations and dots best characterise her work\, acting at once as the materialisation of these visions\, and a therapeutic response to them\, a translation of ‘hallucinations and a fear of hallucinations into paintings’. Layered over time\, circles of impasto lay atop of one another\, varying in degrees of opacity. With some more translucent than others\, Kusama’s iconic polka dots coalesce into a wave of pattern\, coming alive as they breathe and shimmer as if stars under the night sky. These all-encompassing dots form a fluctuating visual field that moves beyond the picture plane\, immersing the viewer within a delicate web of shimmering silver. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso highlighted in the auction will be the late Chinese Canadian artist Matthew Wong’s The Road\, which was exhibited at the artist’s important 2018 Karma gallery show in New York. Offered for the first time at auction\, The Road is a striking example of Matthew Wong’s highly coveted landscapes rendered in monumental scale. Indeed\, the present work bears resemblance to the artist’s River at Dusk\, also from 2018\, which sold for over HK$37.7 million / US$4.8 million at Phillips Hong Kong in 2020 and set the artist’s world auction record at that time. Both largescale works share visually arresting autumnal amber palettes\, as well as depth of perspective achieved through the artist’s adept use of an elevated horizon line. Wong’s works have captivated audiences worldwide with his dreamlike landscapes and still lifes\, often drawing comparisons to the works of Vincent Van Gogh\, Henri Matisse and Edvard Munch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
