DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong Sinfonietta started its “Tiny Galaxy” chamber concert series in 2021\, during covid. Inspired by the hidden gems of Hong Kong\, the first filmed series of “Tiny Galaxy” concerts took place in an eclectic youth hostel in Shamshuipo called “Wontonmeen”. Curated by Concertmaster James Cuddeford\, 11 episodes of “Tiny Galaxy Concerts @ Wontonmeen”\, featuring local and international musicians\, are now shown on the HKS YouTube channel. The first of the “Tiny Galaxy” films\, called “All-Star Tiny Galaxy @ Wontonmeen” made its world premiere as the closing film of the Life is Art Film Festival in 2021\, at MOViE MOViE Cityplaza. Two years on\, our 2nd “Tiny Galaxy” film is ready. It is set inside the magnificent Haw Par Mansion – a Grade I Historic Building from 1930’s Hong Kong. With a mixture of works all hand-picked for the space and acoustics\, the film boasts 14 works played by different instruments\, featuring Bach to the very contemporary… and James as a guide\, taking you around the residence\, to the most unexpected corners! Hong Kong Sinfonietta (HKS) entered the game in mid-2020 when Concertmaster James Cuddeford visited the space. Despite the heat\, the humidity and a piano which needed some help\, James was completely taken by the place. HKS has since recorded 10 episodes of “Tiny Galaxy Concerts@Wontonmeen”\, though only half has been shown online. \nAll-Star Tiny Galaxy@Wontonmeen is a special extended edition featuring international stars performing at Wontonmeen\, including Christoph Poppen\, Aurélien Pascal\, Adrien La Marca\, Sergei Nakariakov and Perry So\, who join James and star pianist Colleen Lee. DESCRIPTION:At the end of  Back On Stage II (Quarantined!)\, is a bonus Beethoven Spring Sonata by Christoph Poppen (violin) and Alexander Krichel (piano). Surprisingly\, this sonata\, in the company of a piano concerto and a symphony\, was equally well-received if not preferred! Encouraged by this\, works for a smaller set-up\, more commonly referred to as “chamber music” (music in a room)\, were filmed. \nVive la Musique! was recorded one day after Back On Stage III: DESTINY in November 2020\, and it includes one of Haydn’s later trios “Jacob’s Dream” – so named because of the ladder-like portrayal in the 2nd movement\, Debussy’s last work – his jazzy violin sonata\, and the cello sonata – which has become a standard repertoire for cellists. The Schumann Piano Quintet\, probably one of his most-played chamber works concludes the performance. DESCRIPTION:Back On Stage III: DESTINY was filmed in Nov 2020 with a live audience\, when the City Hall Concert Hall was temporarily opened. Conductor Christoph Poppen and cellist Aurélien Pascal made their way to Hong Kong from Munich and Paris respectively\, when the two cities were still very much in limbo. They went through 14 days of hotel quarantine before the first rehearsal. \nIn this concert\, Hong Kong Sinfonietta takes you on a journey through three great works\, all tied to the theme of destiny: Mendelssohn’s Ruy Blas Overture – a tragic story of an illicit relationship. Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1 – a personal song of lonely hardship\, struggles and dreams. And Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 – which starts with fate knocking at the door\, and ends in a wave of positive euphoria. \nThe film carries a message through its music\, images\, and dialogue: Per aspera ad astra – from the dust to the stars. DESCRIPTION:At the end of  Back On Stage II (Quarantined!)\, is a bonus Beethoven Spring Sonata by Christoph Poppen (violin) and Alexander Krichel (piano). Surprisingly\, this sonata\, in the company of a piano concerto and a symphony\, was equally well-received if not preferred! Encouraged by this\, works for a smaller set-up\, more commonly referred to as “chamber music” (music in a room)\, were filmed. \nVive la Musique! was recorded one day after Back On Stage III: DESTINY in November 2020\, and it includes one of Haydn’s later trios “Jacob’s Dream” – so named because of the ladder-like portrayal in the 2nd movement\, Debussy’s last work – his jazzy violin sonata\, and the cello sonata – which has become a standard repertoire for cellists. The Schumann Piano Quintet\, probably one of his most-played chamber works concludes the performance. DESCRIPTION:Back On Stage III: DESTINY was filmed in Nov 2020 with a live audience\, when the City Hall Concert Hall was temporarily opened. Conductor Christoph Poppen and cellist Aurélien Pascal made their way to Hong Kong from Munich and Paris respectively\, when the two cities were still very much in limbo. They went through 14 days of hotel quarantine before the first rehearsal. \nIn this concert\, Hong Kong Sinfonietta takes you on a journey through three great works\, all tied to the theme of destiny: Mendelssohn’s Ruy Blas Overture – a tragic story of an illicit relationship. Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1 – a personal song of lonely hardship\, struggles and dreams. And Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 – which starts with fate knocking at the door\, and ends in a wave of positive euphoria. \nThe film carries a message through its music\, images\, and dialogue: Per aspera ad astra – from the dust to the stars.
