SUMMARY:Human Silk
DESCRIPTION:Kwai Fung Salone is thrilled to present????? Human Silk\, ?a group exhibition supported by the Consulate General of Italy and Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong\, as the opening event of ITALIA on STAGE Autumn Festival Hong Kong. It presents three outstanding mid-career artists from Italy\, Paola Angelini\, Thomas Braida and Nebojša Despotović\, all of whom received their education in the city of Venice and have developed their distinguished careers with various degrees of connection to the lagoon city\, which inspired the title of the exhibition. From Venice to Hong Kong\, China\, such cross-continent dialogue connecting the East and West brings to mind Marco Polo and his famous voyage along the Silk Road\, a well-travelled record of human histories\, connections\, civilizations\, and cross-cultural exchanges. Approaching contemporaneity through history and heritage\, all three artists manifest what we call Human Silk\, an attempt to locate the complexity and fluidity of human relations and perception in the flux of time. \nThis exhibition is our first collaboration with guest curators\, Aurora Fonda and Sandro Pignotti\, who are both from Venice. With an anthropological overtone\, this exhibition delves into the essence of human sensibility\, human perception\, human art and human treasures. Taking as a point of departure their shared roots in the tradition of twentieth-century European art and their parallel interest in reinterpreting its artistic heritage\, this exhibition brings the three artists together for the first time to trace the legacy of Italian and European modernist paintings and offers a fresh look at their role in art history. In conjunction with the exhibition\, the two curators will deliver a talk at Tai Kwun’s JC Cube to walk us through the artistic development of Venice as well as the curatorial concept of Human Silk. \nArt Talk: From Renaissance to Biennale — Contemporary Art Scene in Venice\nDate: Thursday\, 12 October 2023\nTime: 14:30 – 17: 00\nVenue: JC Cube\, 1/F\, Block 21\, Tai Kwun\, Central\nLanguage: English\, with simultaneous Mandarin interpretation\nRegister now: rsvp@kwaifunghin.com / 2580 0058 \nOne cannot truly understand the history and development of Western Art without looking at the art and cultural scene in Italy. In particular\, from its art historical role during the Renaissance to the Venice Biennale\, Venice has been an artistic Mecca that fosters many creative figures\, shaping the art world as we know it today. \nOn the occasion of the ITALIA on STAGE Autumn Festival Hong Kong and the opening of Kwai Fung Salone’s new exhibition Human Silk\, we have invited Italian curators Aurora Fonda and Sandro Pignotti to talk about the historical significance of the lagoon city\, the role of Venice Biennale in the development of contemporary art\, the curatorial concept of Human Silk\, as well as their visions for the School for Curatorial Studies Venice. At the same time\, the Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong and Macau\, Mr. Carmelo Ficarra\, will also offer his insight into the development of Italian art and culture in the new generation. \nThe Art Talk is supported by the Consulate General of Italy and Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong.

SUMMARY:Lightness of Being
DESCRIPTION:Kwai Fung Salone is thrilled to present Lightness of Being—a group exhibition of four outstanding female artists Rachel Garrard\, Aigana Gali\, Eleanor Johnson and Kristy Chan\, who through different approaches explore ‘light’ as a physical property and ‘lightness’ as a state of being. \nThe exhibition title Lightness of Being is taken from the 1984 novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera\, which presents the philosophical discussion of lightness versus heaviness. This exhibition is also our first collaboration with guest curator Claudia Cheng.

SUMMARY:Kwai Fung Salone: Enjoy Collecting
DESCRIPTION:Art collecting is more than buying artworks. \nCollecting is not only the building of ownership in desired objects\, serious collectors will find their hobbies a channel for the cultivation of curiosity\, discovery\, knowledge and aesthetics\, which together offer an engaging and rewarding life style and a noble cultural attitude. Collecting requires passion as well as good judgment\, perhaps even before money. It is therefore an interestingly complicated process and further it does need input of financial resources\, in short\, a challenging game. \nKwai Fung Salone is delighted to present symposium ENJOY COLLECTING this December\, the fourth event of its Art Talk series after the successful episodes in August and November. \nWe are very honored to have the participation of four heavy-weight speakers: Mr. Henry Tang Ying-yen (Chairman of the Board of The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority)\, Mr. Robert C. Tang (Board Member of Hong Kong Palace Museum)\, Mr. Kevin Ching (Consultant Chairman Emeritus for Sotheby’s Asia) and Mr. Larry Zhu (Partner\, Bain & Company). \nIn the morning session\, Mr. Henry Tang will speak about how artworks have a way to broaden our mind and thoughts\, and Mr. Robert Tang will share with us his reminiscence as a collector. \nIn the afternoon session\, Mr. Ching will analyse the global auction market and what makes art valuable\, and Mr. Zhu will give an overview of art in the digital era. It is an absolutely rare opportunity for us to learn from these experts in one go and to take away intelligent tips on the ‘Dos and Don’ts’ in collecting. \nMorning Session\n10:30 – 11:30 | Art Broadens the Mind 11:30 – 12:30 | Reminiscence of a Collector \nAfternoon Session\n14:30 – 15:30 | The Joy of Collecting & What Makes Art Valuable \n15:30 – 16:30 | Art in the Digital Era \nEnquiry: info@kwaifunghin.com / 2580 0058\n* Simultaneous Mandarin interpretation will be provided for the English and Cantonese sessions

SUMMARY:Chi Wing Lo: Angels from Infinity
DESCRIPTION:Kwai Fung Salone is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition\, ANGELS FROM INFINITY – Sculptures by Chi Wing Lo. \nChi Wing Lo left Hong Kong more than forty years ago\, and now he returns home to share with us his perception of aesthetics\, life and civilisation as reflected in this collection of fascinating sculptures. These enchanting works are inspired by his spiritual models whom he calls “angels”\, who have guided and accompanied him since his childhood in a small fishing village in east Hong Kong. \nThese angels of Chi Wing Lo are messengers to inspire questions\, cast doubts\, stretch limits\, define unknowns\, and decipher enigmas that may never be decipherable. These angels are here to ignite the love of art and to kindle the graciousness of the soul. \nIn the words of Chi Wing Lo\, “They always come to my rescue and set me free from the mundanity of time and space. \n“A long\, long time ago\, somewhere on the east coast of Hong Kong Island\, these angels were tied scrap papers folded to hover in the breeze that smelled of sun-dried fish. They also appeared as rubber band paddle rafts of popsicle sticks navigating dirty waters. I fell and drowned many times to catch them back. They were the angels whose wings I grew to take my days far; they were the angels whose momentum I implanted to propel my childhood through the stillness of the ordinariness. \n“When I look back\, these and my later angels provided no escape into dreams but discovered a hidden reality. They whispered to me of the existence of another domain\, another dimension\, another civilisation. They cut a slit\, when I least expected it\, on my four walls to let in from the horizon the light\, the colour\, and the infinitude of longing for the beyond. They quietly dismantled my frame of mind\, replaced it with a frameless void\, and\, while I was teetering on the edge of the abyss\, they clothed me in that rare lightness with which I could shield away from the cruel solidity of time. \n“Many may have thought that these angels are flying machines\, inviting us to embark upon journeys of the imagination. Yet\, this infinity of time and space is forever a vacuum. It is waiting to be defined\, filled in\, and experienced afresh by each of us: however visible these angels are when they are about to take off\, however tangible they are when they are about to land. \n“Others may have suggested that these angels invoke silent musical instruments waiting for the proper musician to play them. This infinity of silence they radiate is another open invitation to each of us to tune into a unique score\, a personal song. We would wonder what sound they will produce\, where and how to blow them\, fiddle them. What frequency will they transmit? Will they be audible to human ears? According to John Keats’ Ode on a Grecian Urn\, we still must play them with our eyes to hear the spirit ditties of no sound\, as heard melodies are sweet\, but sweeter are those which are unheard. \n“Still\, others may see these angels from an archeological perspective. They would argue in their scientific debate about whether such angelic artifacts had existed but no longer exist\, whether they must not have existed but will exist. Some may have even deduced that these intact angelic remains will be from the future\, that only in this future period an archeologist digging could identify its unfolding from one infinity to the next. We will be continuously perplexed in exposing ourselves to this extent of exactitude that seamlessly spans past\, present and future. These three domains of time we know of suddenly merge and become indistinguishable\, no matter how we examine their postures\, compositions\, materials\, or details. These are no angels; they possess a demonic ambivalence that unlocks our finite perception. They want us to contemplate our existence\, not just somewhere between the celestial province of GN- z11 and the centre of a sub-atomic particle. They want us to leave behind the burden of time til time cannot find us\, til time loses its dimension when confronting timelessness.” \nBy appointment only. RSVP: rsvp@kwaifunghin.com
