SUMMARY:DEMO\, Elegy of the moment
DESCRIPTION:This year’s International Arts Carnival (IAC)\, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department\, has invited drama company La Buena Compañía from Spain to come to Hong Kong and perform the Asian premiere of multidisciplinary theatre work “DEMO\, Elegy of the moment” in July. The programme blends elements of mime\, mask theatre\, puppetry and contemporary dance\, and uses body movements instead of words to enable audiences to reflect on the value of the family and the responsibility of adults in setting an example for children in the face of technological advancements. It is also one of the celebratory programmes of the 35th anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. \nTechnological products have become deeply embedded in people’s daily lives\, creating a paradox where people are constantly connected online yet often feel distanced from one another. Inspired by this phenomenon\, La Buena Compañía created “DEMO\, Elegy of the moment”\, which depicts the story of how an ordinary family\, comprising a grandmother\, a father\, a mother and a daughter\, lives through and gradually gets accustomed to navigating successive waves of technological advancements from the 1980s to the present. The company prompts audiences to pause and reassess whether technological conveniences have inadvertently caused them to neglect the people and things that matter most in their lives. With detailed body movements and elegant dances\, as well as exquisite puppets and props\, lighting effects and original music\, the production vividly presents the challenges faced by families in the digital age. The company received the award for Best Original Music at the LORCA Award for Performing Arts of Andalucia 2022 with this work. \nLa Buena Compañía of Spain was co-founded by stage director Chema Caballero\, and psychologist and professional dancer Ángela Bodega in 2014. With family and children as its target audience\, the company uses dance and puppetry to present their stories with a main focus on addressing socially relevant issues. Over the years\, the company has participated in various arts festivals in Spain\, including the Hidalgo Puppet Festival\, the South Palma of Rio Theater Fair and the Malaga International Puppet and Object Festival. \n“DEMO\, Elegy of the moment” by La Buena Compañía (Spain) will be held at 8pm on July 12 and 13 (Friday and Saturday)\, and at 3pm on July 13 and 14 (Saturday and Sunday).

SUMMARY:The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer
DESCRIPTION:The production showcases various traditional xiqu styles\, including Jingju (Peking opera) Kunqu (Kun opera) and Naamyam\, accentuating the four major elements\, namely singing\, recital\, action\, and martial arts\, ushering in a new way of presenting Chinese traditional performing arts. The repertoire includes Read Sing The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer performed by the naamyam artist Yeung Kin-ping\, who will tell wuxia stories of The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer in naamyam also known as “narrative songs” using the “storyteller” approach of Cantonese opera; Dongfang Bubai starring Kong Aiping\, National Class One Performer of the PRC\, who plays sheng (male) then\, for the very first time\, metamorphose into dan (female) on stage; Nine Swords of Dugu\, written and directed by Zhou Long\, a renowned Xiqu/theatre artist\, featuring Linghu Chong\, played by a young performer Ren Jia-le\, who was disciplined for making acquaintances with the evil schools and later met \nFeng Qingyang\, a senior at Mount Hua School who taught Linghu the all-powerful swordplay; Linghu Chong: Flee by Night\, personally directed by Ke Jun\, a National Class One Performer of China in wusheng (martial arts)\, starring his pupil Yang Yang. Weeks of performances will culminate in the most emblematic The Song of The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer\, directed by Kong Aiping\, bringing the retired pair\, Linghu Chong and Ren Yingying played by emerging artists Song Bo-fan and He Xin-yue\, back from their recluse and the tempest from Jianghu to the theatre. \nLocal artists paired with a xiqu artist will guide you through an excerpted performance of Nine Swords of Dugu in Cantonese\, presenting Xiqu 101 – introducing typical gestures and techniques in Chinese opera\, namely\, singing\, recital\, action\, and martial arts. Brimming with the beauty of traditional performing arts\, it invites all to relish Xiqu\, delve into the literary world of Jin Yong\, and experience Chinese culture and Arts Tech in the theatre!

DESCRIPTION:Opera Hong Kong is proud to present\, as part of French May Arts Festival\, Charles Gounod’s acclaimed opera Roméo et Juliette\, in a production that was first performed by Opera Hong Kong in 2016 to popular and critical acclaim. \nGounod’s Roméo et Juliette is one of the most successful adaptations of William Shakespeare’s tragedy\, Romeo and Juliet. The five-act opera\, directed and designed by Arnaud Bernard\, will be performed in French by some of France’s leading young opera stars and feature the Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Orchestra under the baton of Roberto Gianola. \nRoméo et Juliette premiered in Paris in 1867 and quickly became a popular fixture of the operatic repertoire globally\, with its soulful duets and powerful choruses combining Gounod’s passionate music with a moving French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. SUMMARY:Shanghai Ballet - A Sigh of Love
DESCRIPTION:Choreographed by acclaimed French choreographer Bertrand d’At (1957-2014)\, A Sigh of Love is an original modern ballet production by the Shanghai Ballet that tells a melancholic tale of love\, passion\, longing and regret. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of mid-20th century Shanghai\, it revolves around two couples whose struggles with personal desire and familial duty come to a head just as seismic political and societal changes erupt around them\, forever altering each character’s trajectory. \nWith a story written by renowned Chinese dramatist Cao Lusheng\, professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy\, this Sino-French coproduction features masterfully creative choreography by Bertrand d’At\, who pushed the boundaries of ballet with a seamless blend of classic and modern ballet\, traditional folk dance and jazz dance in this groundbreaking collaboration. The juxtaposition of Eastern and Western influences is also represented in the music\, which boasts an eclectic range of genres including Chinese folk\, jazz\, classical and pop hits of the era\, further underlining the unique cultural environment of Old Shanghai as a modern melting pot. The costume and stage design\, courtesy of French scenographer extraordinaire Jérôme Kaplan\, celebrates the local characteristics and the sense of refinement that the city is known for. Richard Strauss crafted this groundbreaking opera-within-an-opera about fidelity to love and art as a crossover masterpiece\, allowing audiences to revel in two contrasting spectacles at once. \nThe action takes place at the home of Vienna’s wealthiest man. Preparations are underway for a performance of a new opera seria\, Ariadne auf Naxos\, by an aspiring young composer. Immediately after the opera\, an Italian commedia dell’arte troupe will perform the comic intermezzo Zerbinetta and her Lovers\, to be followed by a fireworks display in the garden. However\, at the very last minute\, performers are told that the opera and the comedy are to be performed simultaneously\, and everybody scrambles to fit the two completely opposite productions together. Theatre and opera\, and classical and popular styles\, collide when the Tenor and the Prima Donna fight for the limelight as tragedy and comedy deliciously unfold at the same time! \nThis phenomenal mash-up of comedy and high art centres on a stellar trio of female leads: the acclaimed Rachel Willis-Sørensen\, the fabulous Brenda Rae with her high-flying vocal pyrotechnics\, and the award-winning Tara Erraught\, as well as the exceptional Heldentenor Clay Hilley. \nThe opera is conducted by Maestro Patrick Lange\, a protégé of celebrated late conductor Claudio Abbado\, and is directed by world-renowned opera and theatre director Robert Carsen\, who has enjoyed a long-term association with the Glyndebourne Festival and curated celebrated productions for the Salzburg Festival\, the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. It was inspired by “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”\, a classic painting housed at the Palace Museum\, which was created by genius young painter Wang Ximeng during the Song dynasty and is the only extant work by Wang. \nThe prestigious national performing arts group will unveil the 1 000-year-old elegance of Song-style aesthetics and celebrate the fine traditional culture of China with the art of contemporary performance. By adopting a narrative structure that interweaves space and time\, the dance drama tells the story of a researcher from the Palace Museum to travel back in time to witness the moment when Wang was about to finish the work. The researcher guides the audience to accompany Wang through the precious time he spent painting the “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”\, providing them to establish the sentimental bond between the Chinese cultural relic and modern-day people.

DESCRIPTION:Being praised as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation\, Seong-Jin Cho will visit Hong Kong in November to stage a piano recital\, offering rich and diverse music pieces to music fans. The recital is one of the highlights of this year’s Asia+ Festival. It is also the grand finale of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)’s Great Music 2023. \nA repertoire spanning the late 18th century to the early 20th century will be performed in this recital\, including Haydn’s “Piano Sonata in E minor\, Hob. XVI:34”\, Ravel’s “Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn” and “Miroirs”\, and Mozart’s “Adagio in B minor\, K. 540”\, as well as Liszt’s “3 Sonnets del Petrarca\, S. 161\, Nos. 4-6” and “Après une lecture du Dante\, fantasia quasi sonata\, S. 161\, No. 7”. \nCho started learning piano at the age of six and gave his first public recital at 11. He was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won the First Prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. As a recitalist\, Cho appeared in many of the world’s most renowned concert halls including New York’s Carnegie Hall\, Amsterdam’s The Concertgebouw\, Berliner Philharmonie\, Vienna’s Musikverein Wien\, and London’s Barbican Centre. He has collaborated with a number of world distinguished conductors including Myung-Whun Chung\, Gustavo Dudamel\, Andris Nelsons\, Yannick Nézet-Séguin\, Gianandrea Noseda\, Sir Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen. \nA pre-concert talk entitled “Classical Romantic Impression” (in Cantonese) will be held at 6.45pm on November 28 at Level 4 Foyer\, Auditoria Building\, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The speaker will be music practitioner Jimmy Shiu. Admission is free\, with limited seats available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nPresented by the Culture\, Sports and Tourism Bureau and organised by the LCSD\, the Asia+ Festival will be held in October and November to bring audiences stage performances\, exhibitions and an outdoor carnival with participation from over 20 countries\, with a focus on Asia and to celebrate the cultural diversity of the continent and Belt and Road regions. \nThe LCSD presents the Great Music 2023 from September to November. SUMMARY:Violin Recital by Leonidas Kavakos
DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has invited the internationally acclaimed Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos to visit Hong Kong in October. Together with his longtime collaborator\, the Italian pianist Enrico Pace\, Kavakos will present an unparalleled recital in which music fans will be able to experience the virtuosity of the maestro. \nThe recital programme covers four French works in different styles from the 19th and 20th centuries\, including Ravel’s “Sonata No. 1 in A minor\, ‘Posthume’ “\, Poulenc’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano\, FP 119”\, Debussy’s “Sonata in G minor\, L. 140” and Franck’s “Sonata in A”. \nKavakos is recognised across the world as a violinist and artist of rare quality\, acclaimed for his matchless technique\, captivating artistry\, superb musicianship and the integrity of his playing. Born into a musical family in Athens\, Kavakos first learned to play the violin when he was 5. By the age of 21\, he had already won three major international competitions\, including the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 1985\, the International Violin Competition “Premio Paganini” and the Naumburg Competition in 1988. He was named the Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2014\, and awarded Denmark’s most prestigious classical music award\, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize\, in 2017. Kavakos has developed close relationships with major international orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra\, Berliner Philharmoniker\, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra\, London Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He has also toured the United States (US) with regular recital partners pianist Emanuel Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma\, and Europe with pianist Yuja Wang. \nPace won the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 1989\, which marked the beginning of his international career. He has performed with many major orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra\, Munich Philharmonic\, BBC Philharmonic\, and more. Also\, Pace has toured extensively\, performing in Europe and South America\, and has performed at numerous festivals including those in Verbier and Lucerne\, among others. He enjoys on-going relationships with renowned musicians\, performing with them throughout Europe\, the US and Asia. \nA pre-concert talk entitled “The Colourful Violin Sonatas of the French Masters” (in Cantonese) will be held at 6.45pm on October 23 at Level 4 Foyer\, Auditoria Building\, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The speaker will be music practitioner Albert Ho. Admission is free\, with limited seats available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nThe LCSD presents the Great Music 2023 from September to November. Various internationally acclaimed musicians and ensembles will come to Hong Kong to perform an array of exciting and diversified music programmes.

This combination of groundbreaking arts technology and breathtaking ballet will take the audience on a magical journey through time to a wondrous world of dinosaurs. \nNine-year-old Sam moves to a new neighbourhood in Hong Kong and faces the daunting challenge of making new friends and starting over at a different school. One morning\, her teacher gives her a dusty old dinosaur encyclopaedia. Inside the yellowing pages\, she discovers a portal that transports her back to prehistoric times. There Sam meets a baby dinosaur who becomes her best friend. But when Sam’s newfound friend tags along back to the modern world\, she realises that her already difficult new life just got a lot more complicated!  \nWebre explains\, ‘Throughout the creative process\, I’ve had some unexpected help from my two-year-old son Axel\, who is completely obsessed with dinosaurs. Therefore\, creating this show was a personal journey for me as well as an artistic one. I hope that children – and adults – of all ages will be entertained and delighted by Sam’s life-changing journey.’ Inside a mischievous dinosaur world with lively animation and immersive video projection\, there’s a new\, exciting scene every time we turn the page: a comical cockroach dance\, an adorable baby dino dance and even a nerds vs bullies dance-off! DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s Chamber Music Connections series will present a performance of “Stories Untold: Brahms\, Joachim & the Schumanns” in June\, telling audiences the story of friendship among four 19th-century renowned musicians through music and theatre. \nThe story of this music theatre is about Joseph Joachim\, who recalls anecdotes about his friends\, Clara Schumann\, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms\, while he is tidying up old letters\, and recollects the good old days when they inspire and encourage each other along the journey of music composition. The plot of the story will be threaded by live performances of beautiful music works composed by the four musicians\, pre-recorded narration and live interpretation by a devising performer\, revealing to audiences the encounters and true friendship among the four. \nArtistic planners of the music theatre include local pianist Linda Yim\, music educator Calvin Lai and independent producer Janet Yau\, while Lai is also responsible for texts and pre-recorded narration. The Director is Patrick Chiu\, with live performances by Linda Yim (piano)\, Dick Wong (devising performer)\, Nancy Loo (guest piano) and Brian Choi (guest violin). \nThe Chamber Music Connections: “Stories Untold: Brahms\, Joachim & the Schumanns” will be staged at 8pm on June 21 (Wednesday) and 2.30pm on June 22 (Thursday) at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)\, the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2023 will present weekend sharing sessions of “Culture Café” once each month from May to December at a bar on a corner of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to share with participants local pop music culture. \nVeteran music culturists Wong Chi-chung and Clarence Chang will host the eight sharing sessions\, which will focus on five topics to explore different aspects and changes in Hong Kong’s pop music culture from multiple perspectives. Meanwhile\, selected music demos will be played through a vinyl turntable at the sharing sessions\, offering participants opportunities to appreciate the details and tunes of music from different periods. Musicians from different generations and styles will also be invited to join some of the sessions. \nThe 1980s was a glorious era for Cantopop music\, when numerous adaptations and band songs appeared that contributed to the diversified music scene in Hong Kong. The first two sessions\, both themed on “Hong Kong Band Sound in 1980s”\, will be held on May 20 and June 17 (Saturdays) respectively. Veteran musician John Laudon will join as a guest speaker in the first session to recall together with participants the precious memories of the city’s music in the 1980s. \nAll sessions will be conducted in Cantonese and will take place at Lemna of the alchemist\, ground floor of Restaurant Block\, Hong Kong Cultural Centre at 3.30pm. Each session will last for about one hour. Each participant is required to buy a drink to gain admission. Limited seats are available on a first-come\, first-served basis.
