Set in southern Spain\, it tells the story of young soldier Don José. After he is seduced by the beautiful gypsy Carmen\, he abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts his military duties\, only to be cast aside in favour of glamorous toreador Escamillo. \nCommemorating the 150th anniversary of composer Georges Bizet’s death\, this unique production invites today’s audiences to experience the spirit and atmosphere of the drama as it was originally performed at its Paris premiere in 1875\, in the version with recitatives by Ernest Guiraud performed just seven months later. With its sassy\, liberated heroine\, the opera scandalised its audience by breaking with social and dramatic conventions. Within a decade\, Carmen had become an international sensation. \nThis enthralling version of Carmen recreates the staging and décor of the original\, based on an impeccably preserved production archive. The archive also included watercolour paintings of the original costumes\, which have been reinvented by celebrated fashion designer Christian Lacroix. DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited Malaysian theatre company MUKA Space to present the Hong Kong premiere of its theatre work\, “Atonement”\, from November 29 to December 1. Through a multilayered storyline\, versatile performances of various roles by the actors and a unique stage design\, the play will guide audiences to reflect deeply on the complexity of humanity and social phenomena nowadays with an uncertain and tense atmosphere. The play is one of the programmes of the second Asia+ Festival. \n“Atonement” is adapted from the Danish movie “Den Skyldige”\, which won Best Film at the Robert Awards\, Denmark’s equivalent of the Oscars. The story begins with a distress call to a police station\, which leads to a series of intriguing cases within a case. Operator Ira\, determined to save the kidnapped female caller Scelus\, goes beyond protocol to search for clues and eventually uncovers hidden and unexpected truths behind the victim’s struggle and fear. The production made its premiere in Malaysia in 2022\, and won five major awards at the prestigious ADA Drama Awards in its home country\, including Best Drama\, Best Director and Best Music and Sound Design\, while main cast member Xu Xu won Best Supporting Actress and Best Newcomer. \nThere are 19 characters in the play. Apart from male lead Tan Li-yang\, a Malaysian film\, television drama and stage play actor who plays the role of Ira\, the other 18 roles will be portrayed by three actors\, including Ruby Yap\, a multitalented artist who has earned wide recognition for her performances in singing\, films and television dramas\, and up-and-coming actors Xu Xu and Desmond Ngooi. Through changes in voice\, movement and facial expressions\, the three actors will demonstrate the personalities and emotional tensions of each character. \nAsia+ Festival 2024: “Atonement” by MUKA Space (Malaysia) will be held at 8pm on November 29 and 30 (Friday and Saturday)\, and at 3pm on November 30 and December 1 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The programme will be conducted in Putonghua with Chinese and English surtitles.

DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited the world-renowned Spanish flamenco diva\, Sara Baras\, to visit Hong Kong and bring her company’s latest production “Vuela” for its Asian premiere in December\, marking Baras’s first return to the city since 2015. The performance will\, no doubt\, deliver an unforgettable celebration of flamenco dance and music. \n“Vuela” is a production created for celebrating the 25th anniversary of Baras’s own dance company\, Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras. She took the occasion to pay tribute to the Spanish guitar virtuoso and composer Paco de Lucía (1947 to 2014)\, who left a revolutionary influence on flamenco music with his work. “Vuela” (which means “fly” in English) was conceived from the respect\, passion and love both artists shared. Since its premiere early this year in Spain\, “Vuela” has toured Europe to critical acclaim. \nThe choreographic journey of “Vuela” is composed of 15 unique pieces within four acts\, where each of them revolves around a specific word\, thus creating flamenco language in motion with a strong narrative: “madera” (wood) which reminds oneself of the strength of roots\, the warmth of being; “mar” (sea) which invites oneself to navigate in passion and be like water; “muerte” (death) is a way to explore human emotions from the deepest depths; “volar” (to fly) is the only way to escape without running\, simply letting oneself be carried away by celebration and joy\, an opportunity that only music\, dance\, and feelings can offer oneself. \nCelebrated for her lightning-fast footwork\, intricate movements of choreography and captivating stage presence\, Baras is the foremost exponent of flamenco dance and one of the most prestigious and recognised Spanish representatives in the performing arts international scene. She was hailed by the online music magazine “Bachtrack” as “a superstar who transcends genres”. Baras established Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras in 1998\, and has since choreographed 17 productions. Over the years\, she has won multiple awards and has been featured in an array of films.

DESCRIPTION:Musicus Fest 2024 draws to a close with a grand finale concert featuring renowned cellist and Musicus Society Artistic Director Trey Lee and Sinfonia Varsovia from Poland. \nFounded in 1984\, with Yehudi Menuhin as its first guest conductor\, Sinfonia Varsovia has worked with the world’s greatest musicians as its music directors\, including the celebrated Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. It has garnered awards for its 300 recordings such as the Grand prix du disque Frédéric Chopin and the Diapason d’Or. As part of its 40th anniversary celebration in 2024\, Sinfonia Varsovia is touring Asia with award-winning German conductor Alexander Liebreich\, who is here reunited with Trey Lee\, to perform works by the Czech master Antonín Dvořák and another distinguished Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. \nDvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor was the composer’s favorite of his own concertos and is often regarded as his unofficial tenth symphony. The second work performed will be Lutosławski’s folk-inflected Little Suite\, dating from 1951 and one of the most frequently performed Polish works of its day. Closing the concert will be Dvořák’s darkly majestic Symphony No. 7\, a fitting performance in a year that marks the 120th anniversary of the composer’s death. \nThis special performance brings together two composers renowned for their reworking of Central European folk melodies and is not to be missed.

Adapted and directed by Mathias Woo\, Co-artistic Director of Zuni Icosahedron\, Left Unsaid\, a Cantonese dark drama\, first use 5.5G wireless network that enables greater bandwidth and faster data to expand the possibilities of theatre and offer audience a brand-new experience. Tickets now are available for purchase on Zuni Ticketing Platform and Urbtix. \nYip shared this new theatre work would be a breakthrough for her\, “the story of Left Unsaid is one-of-a-kind\, as it keeps me thinking. Each reading and rehearsal sparks new ideas. This is not merely about acting a role; this drama will surely help me uncover the unimaginable.” Her role as a neurologist\, married to a neurosurgeon played by Wong\, must have left a strong impression on her\, giving her inspiration. She continued\, “playing multiple identities in my role has given me plenty of room for development. The plot unfolds several love triangles\, and each is interwoven. That has made the story unique.” Wong added\, “the title itself – Left Unsaid – is intriguing. What can be said in real life; what remains unsaid; what are the consequences for having said it? All these have set me thinking. It tell stories  in manifolds – with elements of sentimentality\, absurdity and the other-worldly.”  Woo\,  who directs\, adapts and leads the stage & multimedia design\, described it as “suspenseful\, absurd\, and ambivalent.” With the support of Hutchison Global Communications\, the team is bringing the city’s first 5.5G application into a local theatre. It will aim to provide the audience with seamless connectivity\, almost 10 times faster than 5G\, enabling camera feeds processed in real-time and hence an ever-more intimate connection between performers and audience. \nThis production has kicked off with a star-studded lineup of artists and producers. Left Unsaid is originally written by Nick Yu\, a National Class One playwright and the director of Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. To put together the performance in Hong Kong\, Woo teams up with Yee Chung Man\, who has won several Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Art Direction and Costume Design and received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design\, for art direction & styling; the acclaimed producer and manager Joseph Chan as the producer. DESCRIPTION:The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will launch a new lecture series on appreciating ballet entitled “Great Masters & the Classics” from August to October. SUMMARY:DEMO\, Elegy of the moment
DESCRIPTION:This year’s International Arts Carnival (IAC)\, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department\, has invited drama company La Buena Compañía from Spain to come to Hong Kong and perform the Asian premiere of multidisciplinary theatre work “DEMO\, Elegy of the moment” in July. The programme blends elements of mime\, mask theatre\, puppetry and contemporary dance\, and uses body movements instead of words to enable audiences to reflect on the value of the family and the responsibility of adults in setting an example for children in the face of technological advancements. It is also one of the celebratory programmes of the 35th anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. \nTechnological products have become deeply embedded in people’s daily lives\, creating a paradox where people are constantly connected online yet often feel distanced from one another. Inspired by this phenomenon\, La Buena Compañía created “DEMO\, Elegy of the moment”\, which depicts the story of how an ordinary family\, comprising a grandmother\, a father\, a mother and a daughter\, lives through and gradually gets accustomed to navigating successive waves of technological advancements from the 1980s to the present. The company prompts audiences to pause and reassess whether technological conveniences have inadvertently caused them to neglect the people and things that matter most in their lives. With detailed body movements and elegant dances\, as well as exquisite puppets and props\, lighting effects and original music\, the production vividly presents the challenges faced by families in the digital age. The company received the award for Best Original Music at the LORCA Award for Performing Arts of Andalucia 2022 with this work. \nLa Buena Compañía of Spain was co-founded by stage director Chema Caballero\, and psychologist and professional dancer Ángela Bodega in 2014. With family and children as its target audience\, the company uses dance and puppetry to present their stories with a main focus on addressing socially relevant issues. Over the years\, the company has participated in various arts festivals in Spain\, including the Hidalgo Puppet Festival\, the South Palma of Rio Theater Fair and the Malaga International Puppet and Object Festival. \n“DEMO\, Elegy of the moment” by La Buena Compañía (Spain) will be held at 8pm on July 12 and 13 (Friday and Saturday)\, and at 3pm on July 13 and 14 (Saturday and Sunday).

DESCRIPTION:The production showcases various traditional xiqu styles\, including Jingju (Peking opera) Kunqu (Kun opera) and Naamyam\, accentuating the four major elements\, namely singing\, recital\, action\, and martial arts\, ushering in a new way of presenting Chinese traditional performing arts. The repertoire includes Read Sing The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer performed by the naamyam artist Yeung Kin-ping\, who will tell wuxia stories of The Smiling\, Proud Wanderer in naamyam also known as “narrative songs” using the “storyteller” approach of Cantonese opera; Dongfang Bubai starring Kong Aiping\, National Class One Performer of the PRC\, who plays sheng (male) then\, for the very first time\, metamorphose into dan (female) on stage; Nine Swords of Dugu\, written and directed by Zhou Long\, a renowned Xiqu/theatre artist\, featuring Linghu Chong\, played by a young performer Ren Jia-le\, who was disciplined for making acquaintances with the evil schools and later met \nFeng Qingyang\, a senior at Mount Hua School who taught Linghu the all-powerful swordplay; Linghu Chong: Flee by Night\, personally directed by Ke Jun\, a National Class One Performer of China in wusheng (martial arts)\, starring his pupil Yang Yang. However\, at the very last minute\, performers are told that the opera and the comedy are to be performed simultaneously\, and everybody scrambles to fit the two completely opposite productions together. It was inspired by “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”\, a classic painting housed at the Palace Museum\, which was created by genius young painter Wang Ximeng during the Song dynasty and is the only extant work by Wang. \nThe prestigious national performing arts group will unveil the 1 000-year-old elegance of Song-style aesthetics and celebrate the fine traditional culture of China with the art of contemporary performance. By adopting a narrative structure that interweaves space and time\, the dance drama tells the story of a researcher from the Palace Museum to travel back in time to witness the moment when Wang was about to finish the work. The researcher guides the audience to accompany Wang through the precious time he spent painting the “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”\, providing them to establish the sentimental bond between the Chinese cultural relic and modern-day people.

DESCRIPTION:Being praised as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation\, Seong-Jin Cho will visit Hong Kong in November to stage a piano recital\, offering rich and diverse music pieces to music fans. The recital is one of the highlights of this year’s Asia+ Festival. It is also the grand finale of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)’s Great Music 2023. \nA repertoire spanning the late 18th century to the early 20th century will be performed in this recital\, including Haydn’s “Piano Sonata in E minor\, Hob. XVI:34”\, Ravel’s “Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn” and “Miroirs”\, and Mozart’s “Adagio in B minor\, K. 540”\, as well as Liszt’s “3 Sonnets del Petrarca\, S. 161\, Nos. 4-6” and “Après une lecture du Dante\, fantasia quasi sonata\, S. 161\, No. 7”. \nCho started learning piano at the age of six and gave his first public recital at 11. He was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won the First Prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. As a recitalist\, Cho appeared in many of the world’s most renowned concert halls including New York’s Carnegie Hall\, Amsterdam’s The Concertgebouw\, Berliner Philharmonie\, Vienna’s Musikverein Wien\, and London’s Barbican Centre. He has collaborated with a number of world distinguished conductors including Myung-Whun Chung\, Gustavo Dudamel\, Andris Nelsons\, Yannick Nézet-Séguin\, Gianandrea Noseda\, Sir Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen. \nA pre-concert talk entitled “Classical Romantic Impression” (in Cantonese) will be held at 6.45pm on November 28 at Level 4 Foyer\, Auditoria Building\, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. DESCRIPTION:World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his longtime collaborator pianist Kathryn Stott will stage a recital in November as part of the Great Music 2023 of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). \nThe duo promises an evening filled with musical intimacy and exhilarating expressions for the audience. The programme of the recital encompasses Shostakovich’s “Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor\, Op. 40” and Franck’s “Sonata in A for Violin and Piano” (version for cello and piano). They will also present the sentimental rhythms of Dvořák’s “Songs My Mother Taught Me”\, the meditative melodies of Pärt’s “Spiegel im Spiegel”\, as well as lyrical short pieces of Fauré’s “Berceuse\, Op. 16” and “Papillon\, Op. 77”\, Sérgio Assad’s “Menino” and Boulanger’s “Cantique”. \n
