DESCRIPTION:Grotto is pleased to launch our exhibition of the year\, HUNG HOI: The Luminous and Hidden\, the acclaimed Hong Kong artist’s first one-man exhibition since 2015. SUMMARY:The Solitary Playground
DESCRIPTION:Urban solitude is often linked to population mobility\, cost of living\, and a high percentage of people living alone. Young adults who move to a new city for university or for work may find themselves experiencing loneliness for the first time as they leave existing social ties behind and struggle to establish new friendships. In a large city\, there is little that unifies us unless we actively seek out clusters and create sub-identities based on interests or culture.  To live alone and be content about it subsequently becomes a dominant social trend that transforms traditional values\, culture and even aesthetics. \nIn a transforming Hong Kong landscape of the 21st century\, this brand of solitary elitism offered a counterpoint to political optimism. The works of Kevin Fung\, Wong Yeeki and Rosanna Li can be considered alongside the film noir of the 1930s and 40s\, and the work of American artist Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Like Hopper\, these artists were concerned with the negative effects of urbanization and increasing economic disparities. At the heart of their urban vision are the paradoxes of the foundational democratic myth. We are all created equal\, and yet what makes us equal is our absolute\, inviolable uniqueness and individualism. As a result\, this collection of works is melancholy and longing that haunts our common psyche.  Set in a playground with no one to play with\, we feel strangely content with our loneliness\, even at times enjoy the solitary existence. \nViewing by appointment only: email info@grottofineart.com

SUMMARY:Shum Kwan-yi: Landscape of Haven
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition draws inspiration from the first cave of the Mogao Grottoes and aims to ‘construct’ a landscape of interconnected caves. Through a contemporary interpretation of traditional landscape painting\, it responds to the absurdity of the world and the inner struggles. The first part visually presents the landscapes inside and outside the caves from a first-person perspective. By deconstructing traditional landscape patterns\, it reconstructs a crowded yet solitary alternate space. The second part further breaks down the landscapes into model pieces\, revealing the fictional and assembled nature behind the creative process\, and thus inviting the audience to collectively imagine and “construct” their caves.”     Shum Kwan yi

SUMMARY:Shum Kwan Yi: The Inhabitant Islets
DESCRIPTION:Grotto Fine Art is thrilled to announce a special presentation of the ink installation “The Inhabitant Islets” by leading Hong Kong artist Shum Kwan Yi. \nThis installation features 19 original ink on silk landscape paintings enclosed in custom made lightboxes. In a room resembling a security chamber\, the line of boxes lure the viewer for a closer look at these deserted islands which are devoid of ferry access\, yet remain under constant surveillance. Shum presents these islands as iconic\, ironic and thought-provoking\, and raises questions about the preservation of privacy and our living spaces in the age of internet intrusion and artificial intelligence.
