SUMMARY:Flabjacks: WELCOME HOME
DESCRIPTION:Wander into the weird imaginary world of Flabjacks\, where you can meet chubby friendly folk and embark on a journey to discover what makes a place feel like home. Flabjacks “WELCOME HOME” Art Exhibition\, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong of HK-born artist Ton Mak\, is held at Gallery by the Harbour from 21 June to 16 July 2023\, curated by William Chan Design. This exhibition features not only 29 acrylic paintings with 2 brand new characters in a vibrant and carefree style\, but also merchandise limited to the exhibition including bespoke art toys\, artist collection blanket\, and tote bags. What’s more\, a 4m-tall wood sculpture of the cheerful pink dinosaur is awaiting at the gallery to guide you through the fantastical world of Flabjacks! \nBorn in Hong Kong but raised nomadically across several continents\, Flabjacks’ creator Ton Mak sees Hong Kong as her original home away from home. Having gained fame across the globe\, it makes this first solo exhibition in Hong Kong especially meaningful. Many paintings in this exhibition are Ton’s latest artworks making their debut. Two brand new characters that hold special significance for Ton – the Dinosaur developed during her pregnancy and the Tiger representing her infant son – are also making their first appearances at this upcoming exhibition. \nAs Ton’s imagination runs wild\, fingers are dressed up as a cactus\, a pickle\, or a bottle of hot sauce and come to life in the most whimsical ways\, all of which can be glimpsed in the new Funny Fingers series. Among all the artworks in this exhibition\, Ton’s favourite is Most Special\, which depicts a chunky tiger relaxedly exploring the forest at night. Ton spent most time in 2022 in creating this artwork. “It feels like there is still so much to be explored and that there are many more adventures that await for this tiger pal\,” said Ton. In addition to Most Special\, Baller is an accidental favourite for her. It portrays a cheerful dinosaur baller holding its basketball and conveys a sense of simple happiness. As a completely unplanned artwork\, Ton feels like it is some form of “happy coincidence” and fell in love with it at first sight.

SUMMARY:Ryusuke Sano: ZOOOOOOOM / Accumulating Colors
DESCRIPTION:WAY by Way of Difference is proud to present the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong for Japanese artist Ryusuke Sano. \nOn view are 13 new works by the artist\, created with his distinct visual language – ZOOM. The Tokyo-based artist has built a remarkable reputation in the art scene with ZOOM. His art features a fusion of figurations and abstractions\, sketches and drawings\, blank- leaving and thick impasto. With ZOOM\, Sano channels the tension of an overwhelmed world and seeks to provide an intriguing reinterpretation. \n“Whether you look at my artworks up close or from a distance\, focusing on any point on the canvas\, you can see that I paint intensely. I think ZOOM is the appropriate umbrella term to represent all of my creations.”\nRyusuke Sano \nMost of Sano’s canvas paintings are oversized\, making the depicted subjects seem larger than life-size. Bursting out on each pictorial plane are images juxtaposed with each other\, or colors and strokes overlapping to form a semi-abstract figuration. \nThe way he paints reflects this era – an era of information explosion. Sano intends to reinterpret the various layers of imagery we are being exposed to. With each “zoom”\, we are drawn closer and closer to the tiny components making up the artist’s creative concept – his likes and dislikes\, the things that touched him\, and experiences that left a mark in his memory. In all of that\, he draws inspiration from all sorts of references\, like urban culture\, iconography of his surroundings and daily encounters. From a macro perspective\, Sano’s paintings are abstract executions revealing shared imagery\, which is often cryptic and open to interpretation. \nTo Sano\, all works are created through a candid and uninhibited creative process. They are monuments of confrontation with his inner-self\, shout-outs of his once- private dialogues with his dissociated self\, and declarations of steadfast beliefs that have shaped his life. \nThe self-taught artist studied fashion before pursuing art in New York. His thought-provoking paintings have been winning over fashion brands and trendsetters. He has collaborated with the pop music band King Gnu\, MOUSSY – the fashion brand\, the IWC watch brand\, and many more. He also painted the portrait on Go Ayano’s book cover. \nZOOOOOOOM : Accumulating Colors is Sano’s 7th exhibition based on the ZOOM concept.

SUMMARY:CORN SHUK MEI HO: SWIM AND STROLLS
DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong contemporary artist Corn Shuk Mei Ho created The Night Swims after swimming at night in Lantau Island in Hong Kong during the summer of 2016. Recently\, she experimented with a new material Beeswax\, and applied it to her existing “The Black Series: Night Swims” paintings. \nSelected drawings of “The Black Series: Night Swims” and the entire “Botanical Gardens” series is showcased in public for the first time. \nFeaturing over 35 artworks including the latest paintings and drawings by artist Corn Shuk Mei Ho from her two major series\, the exhibition aims to explore the deepest levels of the human subconscious by creating artworks. \n“The Black Series: Night Swims” was inspired by her first experience of swimming at night in Lantau Island\, where she broke through obstacles and fear by feeling her own breath in the water. \nThe latest Night Swims paintings she made not only depict the stories and people she met while travelling through artist residency last year or the scenes and stormy seacoasts in the UK\, but also showcases her application with newly experimented mediums – “Beeswax”. The painting applied with Beeswax can show a more translucent texture of the oil paint and help her build richer layers on the canvases to depict the water splashes and ocean as well as her painting characters’ skin texture. \nBesides\, the exhibition showcases for the first time some drawings of The Night Swims series. Since the series begins as drawings before being built up with oil paint\, those drawings contain her first instinct and ideas of the Night Swims while all characters are formed by that time too. Therefore\, displaying some drawings in the exhibition completes the viewers’ imagination. \nThe entire Botanical Gardens series is showcased in public for the first time. The inspiration comes from the unique experience of plants coping with adverse and pleasant weather conditions alike\, and daily walks with her dog in the nearby wood and parks. These seemingly mundane or common sightings such as changing of the leaves are full of life and often inform\, change and coincide with our daily emotions.

SUMMARY:Vanessa Lam and Kayla Lui: Stargazers
DESCRIPTION:Gallery by the Harbour presents “Stargazers” The Wharf Art Scholarship Scheme’s Graduate Joint Exhibition 2022. The two recent graduates Kayla Lui and Vanessa Lam are graduated from Camberwell College of Arts\, University of the Arts London and Goldsmiths\, University of London respectively. \nThe exhibition highlights their works with a diverse media covering hand paintings\, digital designs and installation which they have created in the past five years. Named by the graduates\, the theme “Stargazers” mirrors their inspiration through the expression of illustration. Whilst there is a light humour alluding themselves to sardines in stargazy pies\, “Stargazer” fits how the two graduates embody their work: the attempt in manifesting their ideals in a sea of abstract meanings\, whilst remaining embedded and grounded in realistic contexts.

SUMMARY:The Living Thread of Hong Kong
DESCRIPTION:The land and sea of Hong Kong are where its culture and history take place. It is also the carrier of the memory of the entire city for its people. Whether it is the architecture or cityscapes\, they deliver the cultural heritage and vitality of Hong Kong. Filled with rich symbols in every piece of it. In the beginning of 2022\, Art of Nature is delighted to present “The Living Thread of Hong Kong” Exhibition at Gallery by the Harbour (Harbour City) on 5th Jan. It will showcase ink and watercolor works\, conveying their sentiments to Hong Kong\, from Wong Hau Kwei\, Shen Ping and Yick Hang. The exhibition is on view until 16th Jan. \nBased on their experience and knowledge of Hong Kong\, Wong Hau Kwei\, Shen Ping and Yick Hang capture Hong Kong of different periods and scenes with their unique styles. Their works carry a resonance and strong love for the city. Wong’s rendering of mountains\, water\, and fogs shows Hong Kong’s natural beauty: its tranquility and delicacy\, ethereal and majestic\, characterizing Hong Kong’s vastness and spirit of tolerance. His ink works combine Chinese and Western aesthetics. The distinctive colors and perspectives become his symbol and language. Shen’s expression of time passing in Hong Kong is a multi-cultural blend\, colorful and close to the experience and scenes of urban life. Taking inspiration from photos of old streets neighborhood\, the world-class urban architecture\, and the prestigious Victoria Harbour\, Shen’s quick-witted painting documented frames of Hong Kong. Yick pursues an unpretentious and fresh realm in her ink works. The rendering ink and abstract lines express the hazy beauty of Victoria Harbour and buildings over the city. The cityscape and its happening\, combined with the artist’s innocent spirit\, convey her unconfined artistic language. \nWith their love for and memories of the city\, three artists deliver phases and atmospheres of Hong Kong in their series of works\, connecting the living thread that supports the momentum of this city’s urban life.
