SUMMARY:Lousy: Towers Are Giant Fingers Pointing To Heaven
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a recent trip to Tokyo\, Hong Kong-based artist LOUSY presents a series of new works at BELOWGROUND. Entitled “Towers Are Giant Fingers Pointing To Heaven”\, the solo exhibition showcases urban iconographies reimagined in the artist’s distinct visual style. \nGetting lost in the chaotic whirl of Tokyo\, LOUSY discovered the city’s free subway maps and became intrigued by the complexity of textures and colours found within them. Utilising these as a canvas\, he portrays the emotions of being alone in the metropolis\, ensconced in a landscape that is distinctively different from his hometown of Hong Kong. \nBorn in the 1980s\, LOUSY works extensively outdoors\, with his artistic footprint forming an iconic part of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. Taking references from cave paintings and pop culture\, his visual language comprises simplified wavy and rhythmic lines executed in a bright neon palette. \nIn these new works\, the artist’s signature motifs are overlaid upon Tokyo’s subway maps using the solid marker pens that workers use on construction sites – yet another recollection of the magnetic force of the cityscape and the energy of the streets.

SUMMARY:Mateusz Kolek: Alone Together
DESCRIPTION:Curated by ZtoryTeller\, the launch of Polish artist Mateusz Kolek’s first solo collection “Alone Together” and his solo exhibition “Alone Together 2022” Hong Kong will be held in Central LANDMARK BELOWGROUND from August 13 to August 28. \nMateusz Kolek\, who grew up in Soviet-ruled Poland\, has always loved movies directed by Wong Kar Wai. He was deeply attracted by the hustle and bustle of the Hong Kong metropolis. Hong Kong was a recurring theme of his works in the past; \n“Alone Together 2022” Hong Kong is curated by ZtoryTeller\, while “Alone Together 2022” Poland is curated by artist Mateusz Kolek and will be held in Krakow\, Poland at the end of August. Through two simultaneous exhibitions\, they embody the idea of Alone Together: despite being forced into isolation\, Hong Kong and Poland can still be connected through art. \nIn 2019\, Mateusz Kolek’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong titled “Alone Together” curated by ZtoryTeller was a big hit. The series “Things I’ve Seen But I Didn’t Have A Smartphone” documented his vision of a weird Hong Kong — Mateusz Kolek is used to traveling alone without a smartphone\, and that made him a better observer\, allowing him to focus on unraveling the city’s stories. Mateusz Kolek believes being alone doesn’t mean you’re lonely\, and he loves to record the moments when “lonely” people come and go. That is “Alone Together”. \nThree years later\, ZtoryTeller and Mateusz co-published Mateusz’s first solo collection “Alone Together”\, and held a solo exhibition “Alone Together 2022”. The exhibitions in 2019 and 2022 might share the same name\, but the meaning is completely different. \nIn the face of the pandemic and the subsequent isolation between people\, the world isn’t the same anymore. However\, when everyone is in a state of isolation\, we can still find new ways of connecting with each other. The last time when ZtoryTeller meet Mateusz was in Tokyo\, while we were joining a group show there\, and the world had been locked down after we left Tokyo. Matuesz’s first solo collection “Alone Together” included artworks of Hong Kong\, Japan and Poland\, and it also recorded the world before and after the giant change because of the pandemic. \nThrough Matuesz Kolek’s delicate observation and brushwork\, we have the opportunity to re-examine the beauty of Hong Kong: in the eyes of Hong Kong people\, some may seem ordinary\, but in Matuesz’s eyes\, it is as beautiful and breathtaking as a science-fiction movie. Each of Mateusz’s works reminds us that there is beauty in everything around us\, just like there must be a way out of the darkest place.

DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Tokyo presents ‘The Kids Are Alright’ by Japanese artist ZOE\, who makes his debut solo exhibition in Hong Kong at BELOWGROUND. \nFeaturing over 10 different artworks\, the exhibition showcases the vibrant\, colorful\, and playful style of ZOE\, depicting his unique perspective on seemingly ‘meaningful things’ in life. \nWith bold motifs and imaginary characters in bright colorways\, ZOE puts his creative spin on mundane objects around us: “Meaningless things have always been despised by useful things. Just like how unconventional objects are always being covered\, they are forced to have nowhere to escape and hide in a corner. Similar scenarios are repeated daily\, however\, meaningless things are not always obedient. In my paintings\, these meaningless things are full of life\, and they are revolutionary.”

SUMMARY:Cityscape Resolution - Hong Kong by YOSHIROTTEN - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Making its way from Tai Hang to Central\, the cultural destination THE SHOPHOUSE opens its first-ever pop-up experience at BELOWGROUND\, featuring Part 2 of the ‘CITYSCAPE RESOLUTION’ by Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN in collaboration with Hong Kong photographer Wing Shya. \nFor the second iteration of ‘CITYSCAPE RESOLUTION\,’ the artist YOSHIROTTEN expands on the recreation of Wing Shya’s iconic photographs\, presenting 10 collaborative prints. This unique union of the 2 creative minds offers a fresh perspective and a new visual representation of both artists’ styles of work. \nAccording to YOSHIROTTEN\, Wing Shya’s photography captures Hong Kong as “a collection of human emotions rather than the actual scenes of the city.” By entering into the instantaneous world of photography\, in the process of cutting images and expanding their resolution\, the emotions of the objects flow into a strange sense of reality\, like a city that YOSHIROTTEN had never visited. YOSHIROTTEN reconstructs and collages Wing Shya’s images using only the graphic motifs that appear by picking up the resolution\, unveiling the primordial fragments of that particular moment in time. \nExclusively available at BELOWGROUND\, the pop-up experience by THE SHOPHOUSE also presents ‘otherthings’\, which includes 6 limited run photo print t-shirts and a special issue of the cult magazine WERK No. 29 dedicated to featuring the works of YOSHIROTTEN and his reinterpretation of photographs by legendary image-makers\, Daido Moriyama and Wing Shya. WERK Creative Director Theseus Chan employs his trademark design language of utilizing printed form and elevating it to a highly collectible art object\, a craft that is quickly becoming a rarity in the modern age.

DESCRIPTION:JPS Gallery is delighted to join hands with How2Work and BELOWGROUND to present Make a Wish Charity Group Show. This exhibition is a philanthropic initiative\, and all proceeds from sales will be donated directly to Make-A-Wish Hong Kong for children in need. \nThe exhibition presents a series of paintings from twelve artists including Afa Annfa\, b.wing\, Elaine Chiu\, Jackie Lam a.k.a 009\, Kasing Lung\, Kila Cheung\, Kohei Ogawa\, Muu Nanahoshi\, Okokume\, Okrabelo\, Teddy Leung and Yeung Hok Tak. Works donated by the artists will be up for charity sales. \nMake-A-Wish Hong Kong is a charity organization aiming to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses aged between 3 and 17 in Hong Kong and Macau\, to enrich the human experience with hope\, strength and joy. \nSince the Foundation’s establishment in 1998\, they have been bringing transformative impact to over 2\,000 children and their families by fulfilling their wishes and acting as a significant supplementary component to their medical treatment. \nAs a frequent partner with Make-A-Wish Hong Kong\, JPS takes pride in our charitable support in response to local causes.We wish to continue to use art as a medium to support and give back to the local and global community.
